Miss Sarah B. Van Wagenen died at her residence in this village [Oxford], on Saturday noon, after a long and painful illness. She was eighty-four-years of age the day before her death.  A little over two years ago she fell and fractured her hip, and since that time has been confined to her room, and although suffering a good deal of pain she bore it with remarkable fortitude and made no complaint.  The deceased, in connection with her sisters, one of whom survives her, was well known for her many acts of charity and benevolence.

LEE:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY] Dec. 30th, 1878, Mr. William H. Lee aged 58 years.  Funeral services at his late residence on Canal Street, Thursday at 10 o'clock A.M.

Another of our most respected citizens has gone from our midst.  William H. Lee died at his residence early on Monday morning last.  For several months past his health has been failing and he was compelled to give up work almost entirely. During the summer he spent several weeks at the seaside and in the Eastern States, hoping to be benefited by the change of climate, in which hope he was disappointed, and it was evident to his friends upon his return that his days here would be few.

Mr. Lee was born in New London County, Conn. in 1820, and was the oldest of twelve children, five of whom survive him - two sisters and two brothers residing in Connecticut and one brother in Morris, Otsego County [NY].  He came to Norwich in 1844 and worked at carriage ironing for the late C.B. Brown for more than twenty years, also for W.K. Loomis and later for E. Eastman. As a skilled workman he had no superior in this vicinity, and during his life he has been a very industrious, hardworking man, giving himself but little rest from his laborious occupation.

As a citizen, Mr. Lee will be missed from among us.  Although quiet and unobtrusive in his manner, he was genial in his intercourse with neighbors and friends and pleasant with all.  In the home circle his loss will be deeply felt, his attachment to home was strong and lasting, and his family are called to mourn a loving husband and father, whose life has been devoted to promoting their comfort and welfare.  A consistent member of the Baptist Church, his seat in the sanctuary was seldom vacant when in health, and he practiced what he professed.  He was an honest man in the broadest sense of the term and has left no enemies behind him.

Deceased leaves surviving him, his widow and two married daughters, who have the sympathies of the community in their bereavement.

HUBBARD:  At the residence of her son, Hon. J.F. Hubbard in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY] Dec. 28th, 1878, Mrs. Almira Hubbard, widow of the late John F. Hubbard, aged 78 years.

Mrs. Hubbard was the daughter of Gen. Thompson Mead, one of the early settlers of Chenango, who was Sheriff of the County from 1821 to 1823, and always prominent in the business and politics of his time. She was born in the year 1800, in the town of Norwich, where she passed the entire round of her life.  In 1819 she was married to John F. Hubbard, then a young man publishing the Norwich Journal with whom she lived in wedded happiness until his death in 1876, a period of fifty-seven years.  She was the mother of five children, four of whom grew to maturity, but only one of whom now survives to mourn her loss.  Her brothers and sisters, too, of whom there was a large family, all preceded her in death.  In 1818 she united with the Baptist Church of this village, and at the date of her decease held the oldest membership save one in that church.  In all the relations of life, in the family, the Church, the community, she was a gentle, loving, devoted woman, discharging all the duties of her station with alacrity and cheerfulness.  Having lived a Christian life, she died a Christian's death, losing her hold on mortality only to enter the heaven which opened to her view, where loved ones gone before visibly beckoned her approach to the mansions of the Blest.

Among those from abroad who attended Mrs. Hubbard's funeral were Rev. Dr. Jeffrey, of Brooklyn, her son-in-law; Prof. and Mrs. Hoose of Cortland, the latter being her granddaughter; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Mead, of Oneida and others.

James Collins, a brakeman employed on a local freight train on the Utica Division of the D.L.&W. Railroad, met with a shocking and fatal accident about a mile north of Binghamton [Broome Co. NY], on Thursday morning of last week.  He was engaged in coupling on coal cars, when his foot caught in the guard rail, and he was thrown down and pushed by the wheels.  A jagged piece of rail struck against his groin, tearing a shocking wound, and cutting his head badly.  He died on Friday morning.

Deceased was a brother of conductor M.F. Collins, of the through freight on the D.L.&W. and was much respected.  His age was twenty-three years, and he was unmarried.  The remains were taken to Utica [Oneida Co. NY] on Friday, accompanied by his brother, mother and sister, who were with him when he died.

On Saturday, the 14th ult, two boys of Lakeport in the town of Sullivan, Madison County [NY], Elmer Eaton aged seventeen, and Douglas Hoppin aged twelve, went with others to the cider mill of Lot Ward and drank freely of cider, after which they started off on a hunting tour.  Nothing more was seen of those boys until they were found dead on the banks of Douglass' ditch on Tuesday, having died on Sunday, it is supposed, from the effects of the cider and exposure.

Unadilla Valley, Chenango Co. NY:  The light fall of snow on the smooth frozen ground gave us fine sleighing for Christmas, which was busily improved. The morning dawned on Scenes of joy and sorrow strangely mingled.  A gay and festive throng were gathered in one of the homes of Mt. Upton to celebrate the marriage ceremony of one of the fairest of the village belles.  In the house adjoining, the death angel seemed hovering over one who a little more than a year ago was a happy bride.  The "Rose" of the village [Rosa B. Moulton] was born away by a worthy young Aesculapian named Thompson, of Masonville, [R.A. Thompson, Jr. M.D.] now a student in one of the New York Medical Colleges. The best wishes of many friends go with the happy pair. and prayers are offered for the young wife, Mrs. John Secor, formerly Miss Maria Peet, who is lying in the "valley of the shadow."  A few days ago, just across the street, a young life went out, quenched by the same dread disease - diptheria.  Estella Sherman, one of the young converts brought to Christ under the labors of Rev. Mr. Haynes, of Norwich, met the last enemy fearlessly.  "It is better for me to go," she said, and slept in Jesus.

But the saddest of the Christmas surprises, was the news which flew like wildfire through the village and country round, that one of the first families had been visited by an affliction worse than death.  A lovely and beloved daughter of A. Ainsworth eloped on Christmas Eve, with a man named Grannis. The family are highly respected and have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their great sorrow.

Mount Upton, Chenango Co. NY:  Our town has been startled with a variety of news for the past week, and it is impossible to withhold and say there is nothing of importance to notice.  It makes our hearts feel sad when we attempt to chronicle events like the following: The death and burial of Miss Stella Sherman,a young lady living with Mr. Ur Hayes, a victim of diphtheria, after an illness of one week, is sorrowful indeed.  Also, of the same disease after an illness of a few days, the wife of John Secor, recently married, and living on the farm of Mr. Ur Hayes. She was healthy, strong and vigorous and all the prospects fair in anticipation of a long life.  A large and well attended funeral from the methodist Church on Friday last at 12 o'clock, noon; a very impressive sermon by the Rev. T.P. Halstead.

News Item

Oxford, Chenango Co. NY: Mr. Henry L. Miller has recently erected a fine Westerly granite Sarcophagus in his family lot at the cemetery, which is very unique and unlike anything heretofore placed in this cemetery.  The monument is in form a parallelogram, with base finely moulded on which appears the family name in large, raised letters polished.  Above rests the die, which is paneled, with inscriptions in raised letters and also highly polished. The cap over all is heavily moulded, and taken altogether is a neat and substantial memorial and does credit to the taste and skill of the contractor, Mr. H.M. Ashcraft, of Norwich.  Times, 25th.

Union News, Union, NY, August 6, 1857

Death

Mr. Abram W. Tilbury a young man not far from twenty years of age, died in this town [Union, Broome Co. NY] on Saturday the 1st instant, from a tumor on one of his limbs.  The particulars as we learn them, are as follows:

About two years ago, Mr. Tilbury had a tumor which appeared upon his right thigh.  This tumor first showed itself a little above the knee and was loose under the skin and might to all appearance have been removed with the greatest facility.  But it was neglected until is presumed a malignant character and has finally destroyed the young man.  It increased in size until at last it involved the whole limb and was of such enormous size that its circumference at the largest point was nearly three feet.

We regret to learn that the physicians were denied the privilege after his death of taking a plaster cast of it, or of even taking a daguerreotype picture.  We supposed that in these days of investigation, everybody was disposed to favor and facilitate the acquirement of any knowledge that might benefit the human race, but it seems that for some cause or another they were denied even that privilege by the relatives.

Union News, Union, NY, August 13, 1857

Deaths

In the city of New York, on the 7th instant, Mr. Samuel Bunting formerly of this town [Union, Broome Co. NY] aged 78 years.

Mr. Bunting was a native of New Jersey.  He removed to this town some fifty years ago, and shared with others in the toils, hardships and privations incident in a new country.  He was industrious in his habits, kind, courteous, charitable and benevolent to all.  He was the affectionate husband, the fond parent, the desirable neighbor, the enterprising citizen and the poor man's friend.  He was a man of unwavering integrity, and the last years of his life, a devout Christian.  These traits of character, won for him the respect and esteem of all who knew him.  He lived and died without an enemy.

After the death of his excellent wife, which occurred some two years since, being left alone, he arranged his temporal affairs and accepted the invitation proffered by his children to make his home with them in New York, where his life terminated in great peace.  That he might repose in death by the side of his companion in youth, his remains, accompanied by his children, arrived here on Saturday evening. The funeral was attended at the Congregational Church on Sabbath afternoon, by a large assembly of relatives and former acquaintance. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Bridgeman, of the M.E. Church of this village, "The righteous hath hope in his death."

A flower has indeed faded.  One of the loveliest that this world ever possessed has passed to that harbor form whence no traveler returns.  Yes, she has passed through that dark valley where the innumerable hosts surround the throne, where there is no more sickness nor death, and sorrow does not enter.

She is resting in that haven, / Where the good are there engraven; / There her raiments purely shine, / Saintly, as the God divine; / She is praising, forever praising.

Can it be that Martha is dead?  On yes, I saw her body deposited in the tomb, still as beautiful and lovely as when possessed of its immortality.  Now she is gone.  Her pretty sylph life form, her face radiant with smiles, eyes of the darkest blue and hair of the deepest, richest auburn, combed so plainly and smoothly and all that we loved to reverence.  Her companionship and her friendly solicitations have all gone.  She has now a home and a mother that she was deprived of here in this world, that mother that she loved to talk about, enjoys her company now.  She is not alone, no, not all alone.  I think I see her now in that happy place that she endeavored to describe to me while she was sick.  She beheld a delightful place surrounded with the angelic hosts and all the varieties of flowers, more beautiful than any she had ever beheld on earth.  She remarked, " I cannot describe its many beauties."

Her pathway has been encompassed with disappointments and affiliations, but bravely has she encountered all obstacles.  By her perseverance and economy, she has encountered poverty and patiently endured all without complaint.  Trouble and adversity have crossed her way and she knows much of the miseries of poverty without an indulgent father or mother to ward off all accumulating cares or to administer a consoling word in all her troubles.  With all her trials, her heart was yet light and joyful, and appeared happy.  Each day brings its changes, its hopes, its fears, its misery and unhappiness.  One hour brightens the heart with joy, the next grief and disappointments overwhelm it.  Thus, it is ever through life.  It is but one vast act checked with scenes of hope, fear, love, grief and remorse.

She was very patient all through her sickness and bore all pain without a murmur.  Her desires, which were but few, were gratified as far as possible.  There was one we could not gratify and that was her pleading to see her father.  Patiently did she wait.  She would exclaim, "He will come today," but when the last ray sank in the western sky, she would reply, "not today, not today."  Day after day did she anticipate he would come, but no father came.

What a beautiful morning it was when she breathed her last, the sun was obscured behind a cloud and the gentle zephyr swept coolly by.  The birds did not carol their sweet music, and all were quiet around.  What a solemn scene to behold that youth and beauty died with no father or mother to bid her adieu or to speak a consoling work, only a few friends stood by her bedside.  She said affectionately and pleasantly to a youth and friend, "Leave me not until I die."  Then the low accents were heard, "My brother, O, my brother, can I not once more see my brother."  Then she prayed until her soul left the body.  "Have mercy father," is all that was heard.  Then she sank to sleep as calmly and sweetly as an infant on its mother's bosom.  May we all be admonished by this that all must die, and that we may make preparation for the great change, for the lord said, "For in such an hour as ye think not, the son of man cometh."

A Martha once I had, whose lofty brow / Revealed a trace of sorrow's rigid plow, / But intellect divine of princeless worth, / Was there developed from her very birth, / And in the language of her sparkling eye, / My spirit caught the glow of sympathy.

Swiftly and sweetly did the moments glide, / When in life's pathway she was at my side; / Implicit trust I had in none beside. / She was my earthly counsel, yet she died. / Ah, deeply now I mourn my lonely fate / My soul is sad, my heart is desolate.

Her death was in a summer sunrise hour, / A victim of consumption's fatal power; / She faded with the days appearing light, / While o'er her face was faith's pure halo light, / Her trust and confidence was all in Him, / Whose love she felt in that calm morning dim.

Our fairest blossoms are the first to fade, / And all the beautiful which God hath made, / In this frail earth, but in our home above, / No chilling blight will mar our spirit's love, / Nor pain, nor death be there, nor sorrow's night, / God the unchangeable will be the light.

Death

We learn from the Binghamton papers that Mr. Daniel Miner was killed at the Willow Point Mill in Vestal [Broome Co. NY] on Thursday afternoon, the 20th instant by a lath bolt thrown by the circular saw.  He was engaged with Mr. John Anson, slitting up bolts for lath, when a bolt from the hands of Anson, who took a piece and put it on the saw for the purpose of trimming off the stub short, flew with great swiftness, the end striking Miner just below the breastbone.  He immediately sank down dead.  He was about 35 years old and leaves and wife and eight children.  A Mr. Decker was killed at the same mill a few weeks sine, in about the same manner.

________________________

The late news which has been received of Rev. M.C. Devitt's death has cast a melancholy shade over the minds of his friends in Cooperstown and elsewhere.  He was a just man, and the spirit of wisdom was upon him.  He was led by the spirit through the right ways of truth, justice, the straightforward paths of reason, an obedient servant of Christ.  The ends of his ways, the object ever before his eyes was "the kingdom of Christ."  A high and holy object was this, a grand and noble purpose which wisdom held out to him as the aim of his life and the crown of his days.  When a youth of scarcely thirteen he decided his vocation, entered Maynooth college, one of the most distinguished classical institutions in the world, and there completed his classics in less than two years, after which he traveled in different parts of Europe, visited Rome where he was cordially received by His holiness Pius IX.  As a true soldier of Christ, he concluded to go to Australia and labor among the natives and other inhabitants.  Having accomplished his theological studies, he was ordained when scarcely twenty-two years of age, where upon account of his minority he had to get a dispensation from the Holy Father.  He commenced his labors along the east coast of Australia where he had a territory of about one thousand miles to ride over, laboring with an indefatigable zeal for the salvation of souls.  Often his life was at stake whilst laboring among the barbarous natives and pirates who overran the uninhabited regions.

In the twenty-seventh year of his age, as his constitution was not rugged enough to undergo such severe labors, Father Devitt concluded to come to the United States.  Whilst crossing the Pacific, he visited the Feejee Islands and some others in Polynesia.  After coming to the United States, he remained a short time on Staten Island from thence came to Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] where he was apparently healthy until 1876.  In the autumn of that year, he was attacked with hemorrhage of the lungs, which he bore with sublime patience until called form this world on last New Year's Day.  As it is customary for affectionate fathers and mothers to present gifts to their children on Christmas and New Year's it is quite obvious that our Heavenly Father, by bringing his labors and sufferings to a termination, presented him on New Year's Day with "the eternal crown of light" which shall recompence him for his labors and goodness when time shall be no more.  In this age of ours, a few years are as a century of time gone by.  Great changes and startling events follow each other in such quick succession that the greatest names are forgotten almost as soon as those who bore them disappear, and the world is surprised to find how short lived is fame, which promised to be immortal.  He whose name is inscribed even in the golden book of the world's annals finds that he has but written his name upon water.  The Church alone is the true shrine of immortality, the temple of fame which perishith not; that man alone whose name and memory is preserved in his sanctuaries receives on earth a reflection of that glory which is eternal in heaven.  Surely Father Devitt was one of those; of a noble birth, gifted with a powerful and comprehensive intelligence, a remarkable memory, a most fertile imagination which poured forth its images in a vein of richest oratory; a generous spirit, a most tender heart, enriched with stores of varied learning and a genius of the highest kind, graced with every form of manly beauty - nothing seemed wanting to him.  He is gone, but his words and his goodness shall live forever in thousands of those to whom he was so dear.  "Requiescat in pace."

Religious services will be held in the Catholic Church this (Thursday) morning at which a Requiem Mass for the late Father Devitt will be celebrated.  A number of priests from different parishes in this Diocese will be present and take art in the service.
