Deaths

At her residence in Harpersfield [Delaware Co. NY] of inflammation of the lungs, Mary [Rickey] wife of Thomas Rickey in the 57th year of her age.

In the life and death of the deceased, we behold one of the most striking examples of Christian devotion illustrated in the character of the model wife, devoted and self-sacrificing mother. Such is the end of earth, but not so with all.  Hers was a home of blessed immortality in that home whither we trust she has gone.

On the 29th ult. while Mr. William Saunders of Meredith [Delaware Co. NY] was at work on the drum of a turning lathe, which was revolving at a rapid rate, his chisel took too rank a hold, was wrenched from his hands and at the same time tearing off a heavy piece of oak plank. Either the peace of plank or the chisel struck him on the head, breaking his skull and making a frightful wound, form which the brains protruded.  He died on Friday the 4th inst., leaving a wife and several children.  Mr. S. was about 50 years of age and much respected where he was known.

In Binghamton [Broome Co. NY] Wednesday morning 29th instant, by the Rev. Mr. Humphrey, Mr. James Dobbin of Jackson [Washington Co. NY] to Miss Levantia S. Phillips of this village [Binghamton].

Accompanying the above we received a modest slice of cake - the first, we think, since our accession to the Editorial chair of the Republican, and the happy couple, therefore, deserve at our hands the immortality of type. We have often thought of making a few remarks on the cakeless custom of sending marriage notices to editors without any acknowledgement and as a matter of course.  "Times are not now as they used to was" in this respect.  In more Southern and warmer latitudes, brides and grooms are not so selfish in their joy as they seem to be here.  In the liberality and fullness of their hearts they remember the printer and pay the best compliment to themselves, by thinking their announcement of sufficient consequence to them and others to authorize the old fashion remittance of a 'bridal loaf" to the editor.  But our text is in danger of having too long a sermon, and we close by wishing the new pair that fullness of felicity which even the maiden name of the bride happily suggests.

Death

At the residence of his son in Conklin [Broome Co. NY], on the evening of the 24th ultimo, Mr. Samuel Bayless in the eightieth year of his age.  Mr. B. was one of the earliest settlers of that town than a part of Chenango, as he moved there about the year 1811, from Kingston, New Jersey, and after living 50 years the life of a Christian, was gathered by Him in peace whom he had trusted and followed in his life.

At Union [Broome Co. NY] on the 2d instant, Mrs. Elizabeth Jenison, widow of Mr. Marverick Jenison, in the 47th year of her age.  Rarely has there been seen a better illustration of Solomon's virtuous woman than in the whole life and character of Mrs. Jenison. She leaves her memorial after her, engraven on the hearts of a large family of sons and daughters, whom she has watchfully trained to maturity, and of a numerous circle of friends, with whom she rejoiced in prosperity and sympathized in affliction.  While her own household was her post of active duty, she confined not herself to that sphere. She sought out the sick and sorrowing to relive and console them.  She stretched out her hand to the needy. She opened her mouth with wisdom and on her tongue was the law of kindness.  In the quiet, unobtrusive virtues of the meek and humble Christian, she went on her way, witnessing a good profession by all the charities of life, and she came down to her grave in peace.  The memory of the just is blessed.

In Schuyler's Lake [Otsego Co. NY], Dec. 15th, Deily [Adelbert Garlick] only remaining child of Rev. H. and M.A. Garlick, aged 8 yrs and two months, after a painful illness of fourteen weeks. The suffering beyond description during his sickness, he at last quietly, peacefully yes, happily, fell asleep in Jesus.  His view of death was evinced by his frequent conversation upon it and was of a character far beyond his youth.  Its sting was taken away, yet how heavily does the event fall upon the bereaved parents who have been called from time to time to part with dear children till their sixth and last is gone. But while they mourn, it is not without hope of realizing the desire earnestly expressed by Deily to "come and see him before long" in the mansions prepared by Jesus for them that love Him.

We learn that D.M. Miller, Esq. of Oneonta [Otsego Co. _________________________

On Sunday afternoon at about five o'clock, our community was startled to hear that Mr. Lonson Shaw had accidently killed himself in the following very singular manner.  He went into the cellar way to get a piece of ham which was hanging up there, took a knife from his pocket and cut off a slice or two, turned to step up into the room with the knife in his right hand. As he stepped up, his foot slipped and he fell partly on his right side through the door, striking his right arm against the door casing, thereby giving the hand holding the knife the right position to fall upon and for it to strike his heart.  which caused death almost instantly. The scream of a child near him and his falling brought his wife and mother to his side and supposing he was attacked with a fit, after calling his brother, they proceeded to administer what they thought best to bring him to consciousness, not succeeding, an examination was made and a wound over the heart was found.

He resided on the factory ground and was in the employ of W.F. Leonard, in the Factory, and was a faithful workman and Christian man, and was prepared to meet his Creator. We saw him but a few hours before his death assisting his brother-in-law and a nephew, who were that day baptized in the Butternut Creek.  His labors are ended, and his spirit has gone to the God who gave it.  He leaves a wife and two children, an aged father and mother, and other relatives to mourn his untimely death. This sad occurrence has cast a shadow of sorrow over the entire community, and more especially over the church of which he was a beloved member, having but a short time since united with the Baptist church in this village. The New Year which commenced so pleasant in that household in the morning, brought sadness and sorrow before evening.  He was 36 years of age. Funeral will take place from the Baptist church Wednesday Jan. 4th, at 1 o'clock P.M.  He will be buried under the direction of the Masonic order, of which he was an honorable member.

_________________________

On Tuesday, Dec. 27th, a man named Moses Wright, living in the town of Pittsfield [Otsego Co. NY] some three miles from this village, was chopping wood for Joseph Mumbulo, with a son of the latter.  About half past eleven, young Mumbulo went to the house to do his chores, leaving Wright in the woods.  On returning at about one o'clock, found Wright lying upon the ground dead. From appearances he had cut a tree and in falling it had gone against a smaller one, which was carried partly down by the weight of the falling tree, when it sprung back, striking him on the side of the head, killing him instantly, as appearances indicate. Wright was 26 years of age.  He leaves a wife and one child, who have the sympathy of the entire community.  His funeral was held at the universalist church in this village on Thursday, Rev. O. Perkins, of Cooperstown officiating.  Mrs. Wright wishes us to say that she returns her sincere thanks to her neighbors and the community for their kindness to her in the hour of affliction.

Morris Chronicle, Morris, NY, January 11, 1871:  When we went to press last week it was thought Mr. Shaw came to his death as we then stated, but subsequent examination of the place show without doubt that he received the wound while cutting off the meat, the knife striking a bone and slipping off. There were blood stains on the wall opposite to where he stood. The meat hung about breast high, and he held it with the left hand cutting towards him with the right. The knife which was very sharp shows that it came in contact with the bone, the bone also shows the mark of the knife.  He had cut off several pieces of the meat, giving some to his little girl who stood by his side, and ate of it himself.  After receiving the wound he turned around and fell into the room (the door being open all the while) where his mother sat reading aloud, who asked him what was the matter. He answered that he did not know and lived some ten minutes, but was unable to speak.  Physicians say that a very slight wound in the place where his was would paralyze the heart and cause death. At the time Mr. Shaw had no coat or vest on.

The funeral of Mr. Shaw last Wednesday was very largely attended. The church was packed full, and some one hundred and fifty Masons were in attendance.  The lodges of Laurens, Butternuts, Burlington, New Lisbon and Otego were well represented.

Chenango Forks, Broome Co. More a young and enterprising merchant of Whitney's Point [Broome Co. NY].  The ceremonies were performed by Rev. T.H. Griffith and were witnessed by far the largest congregation ever assembled there. After the services at the church, a reception was given at the house and was attended by upwards of one hundred and fifty. Death

CLARK:  In Columbus [Chenango Co. NY] Feb. 1, 1879, Walter Clark aged 32 years.

The funeral of Walter Clark was attended on Monday of this week, Rev. D. Ballou officiating.  He leaves a wife and one child to mourn his loss.  Mr. Clark was a man universally respected in the community in which he lived, and we think it not too much to say that no man could be taken from the town in which he has always lived whose loss would be more sincerely and universally mourned than that of Walter Clark.  Kind, gentlemanly and upright as a citizen, tender and loving as a husband and father, his memory will long be cherished by all.

Among the friends who were expected to attend the funeral were Mr. Lewis Miller and family of Otselic, when alas! just as the services were about to commence, a telegram was received announcing the death of Mrs. Miller, aunt of Mr. Clark, which occurred on Sunday, the 2d inst. Truly, a singular coincidence.

Mr. Almon Palmer, father of Mrs. Clark, whose home is in Illinois, arrived here on Sunday, having come all the way from his home since Friday morning.

News Item

Our Early Settlers

Sidney Plains, Delaware Co., NY

Mr. John Baxter, son of Mary and Levi Baxter, was born in Delhi, Delaware Co., N.Y., June 1795.  His father, who was a farmer and lumberman, etc., was born in Windsor, Conn., August 14th, 1765, where he resided till the year 1791, when he moved to Delhi, being then in the 25th year of his age.  At that time there was but one family living in the place, and it was a dense and almost an unbroken wilderness from there to Catskill.  As one of the many little incidents connected with the early settlement of this section of the country, we would mention that Mr. Baxter in the month of June following his arrival at Delhi, went with his ox team and sled to mill at Schoharie, when the echoing sounds of wolf and panther were heard in every direction.  Mr. Baxter remained in Delhi 14 years, when he removed to Sidney Plains in February, 1805, where he engaged in the farming and lumbering business quite extensively and amassed a large landed property, which he subsequently divided among his children, which comprised seven sons and one daughter, who all grew up and became married and settled in life, with the exception of one son who remained single.  Mr. Baxter died May 26th, 1851, in the 86th year of his age. His wife who was born July 11, 1777, died January 7, 1859.

Mr. John Baxter, the subject of this sketch, was the fourth son, and with an invalid brother, are all that now remain of this once large and prosperous family.  For many years he followed the occupation of his father, but his health failing he sought a change in business and engaged in the mercantile trade in  the village of Unadilla [Otsego Co. NY] in the year 1835, where he remained for three years, when he again returned to the farm.  Mr. Baxter was first married January 20, 1820, to Miss Ann Johnston, daughter of Col. Witter Johnston, and by whom he had three children, all of whom died young.  His wife also died on the 2d of July 1826.  But he was again married November 14th, 1827, to Maria Towndson, daughter of William Towndson, Esq. of Walton [Delaware Co. NY] by whom he also had three children, a son and two daughters, all of which lived to grow up, but two have since died. The oldest daughter, Eliza (now Mrs. M.L. Rogers) resides at the present time in Iowa, where she also has a daughter married.  Mrs. Baxter, his second wife, died March 15th, 1835.  He was again married to Mary Johnston, sister of his first wife, Oct. 5th, 1838.

Mr. Baxter was early connected with the First Congregational church of this place, having joined in the year of 1812, and has always been a prominent and active member.  He has also held important offices in town and always maintained a high respectability in this community and though suffering greatly from impaired health, still appears to enjoy social life to a wonderful extent.  He is at once pleasing and interesting in his manners and conversation, displaying all the characteristics of a cultured gentleman.  He is possessed of a kind and genial spirit, with a warm and sympathetic nature that leads him to perform among the needy many acts of charitable kindness.  And though he has retired from active labor upon a competency, he still feels a love for improving and beautifying the present homestead.  The evergreen hedges which adorn the avenue leading to his residence are among the finest in the State, and which not only renders his situation rich and attractive but reflects great credit upon its projector.  In person, Mr. Baxter is tall, being about six feet high, with a slender form and weighing only 135 pounds, but his carriage is erect with a quick and firm step and is one whose form and presence would be greatly missed from the home fireside, the social circle and the busy street.

Marriage

Jan. 22, 1879 was the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of George C. and Lois Mead.  They were married Jan. 22, 1829 at Smyrna, Chenango County, N.Y., where they lived thirty-five years and reared a family of children, two of whom have, we trust, gone to their better home on high.  Two of their daughters are married and resided in this vicinity.  One son lives in Scranton, Pa. April 18, 1854, Mr. and Mrs. Mead removed to Franklinville, N.J., where they now reside with one son and daughter. The following lines, written by a friend, are suggestive and give expression to their feelings as they review the half century of their married life.

Few the years we numbered then / Now we count three score and ten / Each its joys and grief has brought / Eash its varied lessons taught / Light and Shade has marked the years / Smiles have mingled with our tears.

Pledges to our love were given / One, two, three, four, five, six, seven / Each is welcome brought to share / Parent love and parent care / Each one strong in helplessness / Claimed our patient tenderness.

Twice the spoiler came and bore / Loved ones to the other shore. / Came in shadow, bid us weep. / Gave to our beloved sleep / Laid our treasures in the dust. / Left us hope, taught us to trust.

Days have lengthened into years / In the west our sun appears. / Light that shines beyond the tomb / Points us to a better home / And we know that one by one / Fifty years have come and gone.

Deceased was formerly a resident of this village [Norwich Chenango Co. NY] having left here for the west in 1860.  He leaves a wife and one child.

BRIGGS:  Hiram Briggs and wife started for Poughkeepsie February 5 on a melancholy errand.  The estimable Christian lady, Miss Rosina Briggs who spent some weeks with her brother, H. Thus "God buries His workmen and still carries on His work.

SWAN:  Lincklaen, Chenango Co. NY:  William Swan whom we spoke of some weeks since as being quite ill, died on Sunday last, Feb. 2d, and was buried at -?- Settlement on the 4th, Rev. Mr. Fisher of Deruyter officiating.  This event is a most afflicting dispensation and has cast a gloom of sadness over the entire circle of acquaintances of the deceased and has fallen with crushing weight upon his immediate family, wife and one son.  He is cut down in the midst of his usefulness, while the apparent plans and purposes of life were not accomplished.  Mr. Swan was one of our best men, and lived and died respected and honored for his noble, upright character.  He had the reputation of an honest man, not only by profession, but by practice in his everyday life.  Mr. S. was conscientious in his business matters, and the name of William Swan was always honored.

Variety Wedding:  Quite a nice family festival took place last Thursday at the house of George Miller in South Oxford [Chenango Co. NY].  It was the crystal or, as called by card, variety wedding of George and Amanda Miller.

Since they had been prevented by severe sickness of one of the party from celebrating their 10th anniversary, they concluded not to let the 15th pass unnoticed. Therefore on Jan. 29th, favored with beautiful weather, a host of relatives, neighbors and friends gathered there in the afternoon to the number of fifty or more to congratulate them upon the happy return of their marriage day, not forgetting some little offerings as tokens of their good will, which certainly was as pure as the crystal vases. The assembled multitude were hospitably treated to a bountiful repast, carefully prepared and at the conclusion of the feast a poem written for the occasion was read by one of the guests. The evening was spent in friendly conversation and many good wishes were bestowed on the worthy couple at the parting.

In view of the death of Judge Balcom, a committee was appointed to prepare and report minutes and resolutions to this meeting. The report as made and accepted is as follows:

The members of the Bar of Chenango County [NY] desire to express and place upon record their appreciation of the character of the late Hon. Ransom Balcom. and their sorrow for his loss.

Judge Balcom was born and reared in our County.  Here he was educated and here too was laid the foundation and indeed was reared the super-structure upon which his reputation as a lawyer vested and here was gained all that legal knowledge which pointed him out as a proper man to place upon the bench.

His was the example of a man who, unaided by an adventitious circumstances, rose to eminence as a jurist and during his long judicial career retained the confidence and respect of the members of the Bar and of the community.  He was laborious, patient and careful as a lawyer and judge.  He was courteous, too, listening carefully to arguments, patiently attending to what might be said, giving his decisions with clearness and integrity.  To his friends we tender our warmest sympathy in their great bereavement.

Resolved:  That the foregoing minutes be entered in full upon the records of this association.
