Marriage
Jan. 22, 1879 was the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of George C. and Lois Mead. They were married Jan. 22, 1829 at Smyrna, Chenango County, N.Y., where they lived thirty-five years and reared a family of children, two of whom have, we trust, gone to their better home on high. Two of their daughters are married and resided in this vicinity. One son lives in Scranton, Pa. April 18, 1854, Mr. and Mrs. Mead removed to Franklinville, N.J., where they now reside with one son and daughter. The following lines, written by a friend, are suggestive and give expression to their feelings as they review the half century of their married life.
Few the years we numbered then / Now we count three score and ten / Each its joys and grief has brought / Eash its varied lessons taught / Light and Shade has marked the years / Smiles have mingled with our tears.
Pledges to our love were given / One, two, three, four, five, six, seven / Each is welcome brought to share / Parent love and parent care / Each one strong in helplessness / Claimed our patient tenderness.
Twice the spoiler came and bore / Loved ones to the other shore. / Came in shadow, bid us weep. / Gave to our beloved sleep / Laid our treasures in the dust. / Left us hope, taught us to trust.
Days have lengthened into years / In the west our sun appears. / Light that shines beyond the tomb / Points us to a better home / And we know that one by one / Fifty years have come and gone.

Deceased was formerly a resident of this village [Norwich Chenango Co. NY] having left here for the west in 1860. He leaves a wife and one child.
BRIGGS: Hiram Briggs and wife started for Poughkeepsie February 5 on a melancholy errand. The estimable Christian lady, Miss Rosina Briggs who spent some weeks with her brother, H. Briggs, a little more than a year ago, is dead. She was an earnest worker in the cause of gospel temperance and a Christian and was torn away from her loved work almost unwillingly by the cruel power of disease. Thus "God buries His workmen and still carries on His work.
SWAN: Lincklaen, Chenango Co. NY: William Swan whom we spoke of some weeks since as being quite ill, died on Sunday last, Feb. 2d, and was buried at -?- Settlement on the 4th, Rev. Mr. Fisher of Deruyter officiating. This event is a most afflicting dispensation and has cast a gloom of sadness over the entire circle of acquaintances of the deceased and has fallen with crushing weight upon his immediate family, wife and one son. He is cut down in the midst of his usefulness, while the apparent plans and purposes of life were not accomplished. Mr. Swan was one of our best men, and lived and died respected and honored for his noble, upright character. He had the reputation of an honest man, not only by profession, but by practice in his everyday life. Mr. S. was conscientious in his business matters, and the name of William Swan was always honored.

Variety Wedding: Quite a nice family festival took place last Thursday at the house of George Miller in South Oxford [Chenango Co. NY]. It was the crystal or, as called by card, variety wedding of George and Amanda Miller.
Since they had been prevented by severe sickness of one of the party from celebrating their 10th anniversary, they concluded not to let the 15th pass unnoticed. Therefore on Jan. 29th, favored with beautiful weather, a host of relatives, neighbors and friends gathered there in the afternoon to the number of fifty or more to congratulate them upon the happy return of their marriage day, not forgetting some little offerings as tokens of their good will, which certainly was as pure as the crystal vases. The assembled multitude were hospitably treated to a bountiful repast, carefully prepared and at the conclusion of the feast a poem written for the occasion was read by one of the guests. The evening was spent in friendly conversation and many good wishes were bestowed on the worthy couple at the parting.
