HALL:  In Pitcher [Chenango Co. NY] March 20th, Capt. Benjamin P. Hall aged 73 years.

Pitcher, Chenango Co. NY:  The death of Capt. Benjamin P. Hall, which occurred at his residence in this village on Thursday morning, March 20th, will be read with sadness by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.  Mr. Hall was born in Massachusetts, in 1805, and while in infancy his parents moved to the town of Preston, in this county [Chenango Co. NY].  Arriving at manhood, he married Miss Caroline Andrews of Preston, who survives him.  Mr. and Mrs. Hall were never blessed with any children.  In the fall of 1841, they moved to this village [Pitcher], where they won the confidence and respect of all - Mr. Hall by strict integrity and application to business, and Mrs. Hall by her kindness and sympathy for those in distress and her pleasant and wise counsel to all.  For two years past Mr. Hall's health has been failing.  Consumption had fastened upon him and friends witnessed with sorrow and sadness his wasting away from day to day with no permanent relief.  For many months past he has been confined to the house and has borne his pains with patience and his last days, like his life, were peaceful and quiet.  A good citizen, respected and esteemed for his many good qualities, a steadfast friend and a pleasant companion, an affectionate and indulgent husband, he has gone from us never to return.  On Saturday morning following his death, the village people assembled at his late residence and took a farewell blook at that noble man.  A few appropriate words were spoken by Rev. Mr. Turnbull, and a fervent prayer offered.  His remains were then taken to Oxford [Chenango Co. NY] for interment, a number of our citizens accompanying them.

LEWIS:  In Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] March 18th, Maj. William Lewis aged 88 years, formerly a resident of Norwich [Chenango Co. NY].

Major William Lewis died at the residence of his son-in-law, A.H. Watkins, in Cooperstown on Tuesday morning of last week, after a brief illness, doubtless contracted by his attendance on the Buell trial, aged nearly eighty-eight years. Deceased was well known to many of the older residents of this County, he having in his earlier years been for a time a resident of Pharsalia [Chenango Co. NY] and later a popular hotel keeper in this village [Norwich].  In 1834 he took possession of the Mansion House on the corner opposite the Eagle Hotel now occupied by D.E. Comstock and Denis Conway ][in 1879], where he remained for four years, when he took the Coffee House (now Palmer House) of which he was proprietor for a year or two.  During his residence here Major Lewis made many lifelong friends.

News Items

[Mack] only daughter of Orville and Zilpha Mack, aged 11 years, 9 months and 8 days.  In the day when the sun of prosperity seemed shedding its most genial rays upon a happy father and mother, enabling them to provide one of earth's most pleasant homes for their interesting children, the angel of death swooped down and carried away one of their household, leaving them sad and disconsolate.  While sympathizing with the bereaved, we would endeavor to offer a quiet balm to those saddened hearts in the following lines:

No words can tell the anguish / Of these sorrow-stricken breasts, / Those parents and that brother, / As they laid her down to rest.

Other friends gathered around her, / All anxious to save / This darling little Florence / From the cold and silent grave.

But the angels still keep calling / From that delightful shore: / "Come! Come! sweet little Florence / Where death shall be no more."

Reflect, then, gentle mother, / Although sad it's made your home, / Little Florence is now an angel / Beside the Saviour's throne.

Remember that the jewel / Which was given to your trust, / Was returned unto its owner / All free from moth and rust.

When your feet have grown too weary, / Gather on to press earth's way; / Florence, then, will come to guide you /To the land of endless day.

Marriage

In Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] on the 25th inst. by the Rev. J. Smith Jr., Mr. Geo. E. Bixby of Davenport [Delaware Co. NY] to Miss Catharine Bates of Pittsfield [Otsego Co. NY].

Death

At his residence in this village [Oneonta, Otsego Co. NY] on the morning of the 25th inst. after an illness of nine days, Mr. S.S. Newman aged 36 years.

In the death of Mr. Newman this community have lost a businessman of high standing in society.  His death brings sadness to many hearts, but none feel it more keenly than does the members of his own family, and the church of which he was a worthy member to whom he was endeared for his many virtues.  The large concourse of people which attended his funeral, paying the last tribute of respect to the friend and neighbor showed how deeply they sympathized with his surviving friends.

He has left a widow and one child, and a host of warm friends to mourn his departure from earth to that land from whence no traveler will return.  His sudden death should be a warning to us all to be prepared to meet our God, for we know not the day or the hour when we shall be called to follow him.

___________________________

In Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] on the 11th inst. Diadama M. [Cook] daughter of the late Robert Cook Esq. and Sabra his surviving companion, in the 18th year of her age.

Thus has one been cut down in the bloom of youth and surrounded by all the endearments of life.  She was the light and joy of the domestic circle, cheering by kind and affectionate words and deeds the heart of her widowed mother, and other members of the afflicted family.  She had gathered around her a large circle of friends to whom she had greatly endeared herself by kind and amiable deportment and her constancy and devotion as a friend.  But a change has come over those circles, their joy is turned to sadness.  The light of the domestic circle is extinguished.  Pale death has come and laid his icy hand on the loved one.  The luster of those eyes is dimmed.  The beauty of that countenance is faded out.  The sweet accents of that voice are hushed.  The grave has received its own.  But death was not an unwelcome visitor.  Although at first she seemed surprised and almost overcome with the thought that she must leave her friends and die, while yet so young.  Yet after a little time to collect herself and examine the foundation on her hope in Christ, she became perfectly resigned and longed for the hour to come when it should be the "Will of God" to take her home. She died in peace leaving an afflicted mother to mourn the loss of her only child, and a large circle of friends and youthful companions one of their brightest ornaments.

Her funeral services were attended at the house of the deceased by a large concourse of people and a sermon was preached on the occasion by Elder J. Smith Jr. from Rev. XX, 20, words which fell from her lips just as she passed to the skies.  "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."

Our Business Men - Sidney Plains, Delaware Co. NY

Among the young businessmen of our place none need a more special notice than the enterprising grocer and dry goods merchant, S.L. Fisher.  He was born at Schuyler's Lake, Schoharie Co. [NY] December 23d, 1850.  His father, L.W. Fisher, was a tanner by trade, but not liking his father's occupation, left home at the early age of twelve years to attend school at West Windfield Academy, Herkimer Co. N.Y., where he remained about three and one-half years. At the expiration of that time, his father moved to the same place and engaged in the milling business, in which he assisted for about one year, when they moved to the village of Unadilla, Otsego Co. N.Y. and leased the sawmill which they ran for one year, when he went to Worcester [Otsego Co. NY] and spent a short time superintending the management of a steam mill.  But the company by whom he was employed failing, he returned to Unadilla and entered the law office of Belknap & Wendell for the purpose of studying the legal profession and remained with them about one year and five months.  But being dependent upon his own resources, he engaged as a clerk to W.P. Emory with the privilege of continuing his law studies in "leisure hours", and he remained with Mr. Emory till the next spring when he went to Norwich N.Y.[Chenango Co.] and obtained a position as traveling agent for the How Sewing Machine Co. at a salary of $600 per year and all expenses paid.  He held this position one year and was then honored by the promotion of general agent in appointing agencies and also in collecting &c, with an increased salary amounting to $1500 a year and his expenses paid, and he also remained in this position a year when he closed his engagement with them and was married May 6th, 1871 to Miss Augusta DeMont of Schenevus, Otsego County, NY.  And in October 1878 he went to Afton [Chenango Co. NY] and became a partner in a steam mill under the firm name of S.L. Fisher and Co., where he remained about two years, when he sold out his interest in the mill and moved to Sidney Plains March 4th, 1876 and engaged in the grocery and provision business and during the past winter has added to his store not only a dry goods and crockery department, but also offers for sale choice selection of boots and shoes at remarkable low prices.

And Mr. Fisher in thus establishing an active and a successful trade, has been wholly dependent upon his own energies, with no other capital than that of his own creating, and for a person so young in business and of limited means to commence as a stranger in a town where the trade is already monopolized by those previously located, bespeaks a remarkable sagacity in the management of business affairs.  Mr. Fisher is assisted in the store by his accomplished wife who inherits from her parentage those agreeable manners so peculiar to the French people and she has a pleasing mode and one that is well adapted to wait upon customers without giving offence.

Mr. Fisher personally stands some 5 feet 11 inches high and weighs 131 lbs and has grey eyes, dark hair and wears a light shaded moustache.  In his walk he exhibits much elasticity, betraying something of a nervous temperament and is also quick and active and usually prompt and correct in all his business transactions and is regarded as a man possessed of good morals and habits, and one who is entitled to respect from the people of this village and those of the surrounding community.
