Death

In this village [Cherry Valley, Otsego Co. NY] on Saturday morning last, Mr. Josiah Grout, late of Rome, Oneida Co. [NY] aged about 26 years.

Marriage

At Penn-Yan, Yates County [NY] on the 19th ult. Mr. Eben Smith, merchant of that place to Miss Eliza Ellsworth.

Death

In Sullivan, Madison County [NY] on the 17th ult, the widow Martha Page aged 92 years, formerly of North Branford, Connecticut, where she has left numerous connections and friends, as well as in this state.  Mrs. Page had her senses to her last moments, has been a professor of religion for 70 years and appeared to have died in the full belief of a resurrection and of the Saint's final perseverance in the world to come.  Her funeral was attended in the village of Chittenango [Madison Co. NY] by a great number of her kindred and of the respectable inhabitants of said village.  An appropriate sermon was delivered by the Rev. Mr. Olds of Lenox from 2d Corinthians, 5, 1 "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens."

Ten Dollars Reward

Ran away from the subscriber on the 28th July last, an indented apprentice in the shoemaking business named William Watrous about 19 years of age, five feet ten inches high, rather of a dark complexion, having a down cast look.  Had on and carried with him, 1 blue broadcloth strait bodied coat, a little worn; 1 black ditto homemade; 1 sailor jacket, black bombazet;  pair hue bombazet trousers; 1 pair two ditto;  pair ditto black homemade; white vest; striped woolen ditto,;  pair calf skin shoes; a new fur hat, with bell top; 3 shirts; &c.  He is thick set, has moles on his face, and plays well on the fife.  It is supposed he has gone to Weathersfield, Conn.  Whoever will secure said ranaway apprentice in my gaol in the United States and give information to the subscriber so that he can obtain him again, shall be entitled to the above reward.  

All persons are forbid harboring, trusting or employing said ranaway on the strictest penalty of the law.  Maline Miller,   Cherry Valley, Aug. 4, 1823

At Manlius, Onondaga County [NY] on the 4th instant after a few days illness, Capt. James Farquaharson of this town [Cherry Valley, Otsego Co. NY], aged about 55 years.  Mr. F. was on his return to his family in this town when taken ill.

Deaths

In Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] on Thursday last, Thomas Shankland Esq. aged 63 years.

In the city of Albany [Albany Co. NY] suddenly on the 21st inst. Mr. John Cook, state librarian and proprietor of the city reading rooms.  To a life of probity and respectability, Mr. Cook added that of a most useful and obliging citizen.  His death is a severe depravation to his family and a general loss to the public.  Argus

A man by the name of William Vormylia a harness maker and trimmer, about 36 years of age, was found dead in the shop of Mr. Arnold Baker in this village [Cherry Valley, Otsego Co. NY] on Sunday morning last. The deceased had the evening before requested permission to sleep in the shop.  Verdict of the Coroner's Jury, that he came to his death by the visitation of God in the rupture of the blood vessels of the intestines, brought on by habitual and excessive intemperance.  It is said the deceased has a family in the city of New York where he formerly worked with a Mr. Bloodgood.  He came to this village a short time since and according to his own story he enlisted in a company of artillery in New York, went to Detroit with his company and being discharged was on his way home.
