About five o'clock on Friday afternoon a little boy about three years of age was drowned in the canal near Rexford Street bridge [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY].  The child was a son of Patrick Curley, who resides on the tow path between Rexford and Mitchell Streets.  At the time of the accident the little fellow was playing on the ice with other children.  A hole had been cut in the ice near the bridge, for the purpose of getting water, and into this hole the child fell and instantly disappeared under the ice.  The other children, too young to be able to render assistance, ran screaming from the spot, and one of them hastened to where the father of the child was at work, and informed him of the sad accident.  The frantic father hastened to the spot, and perceiving the child's cap floating on the water, he eagerly clutched it, thinking that it was still on the child's head.  But to his disappointment he found that the body had sunk from sight.  he then lowered himself through the hole into the ice-cold water, in a vain endeavor to find where the body was and rescue it from its watery bed, and had it not been for the interposition of persons who had by this time congregated, his benumbed fingers would probably have lost their hold upon the ice, and he been drowned.  A large number of men immediately set to work to recover the body of the child, and the ice was cut, and the canal dragged for a long distance.  Not until ten o'clock at night was the body found, and then only about six feet from the place where it fell in.  It is a sad accident and should be a warning to parents not to allow such small children to play on the ice.

We feel that it is but a just tribute to the memory of our young friend, whose death is noticed above that we should say a few words of the lovely Christian spirit which she exhibited during those days of languishing and suffering.  It was our privilege to watch at the bedside during many of the hours of the days and nights of the week previous to her departure, and we can truly say we never saw more than trust in the promises of the Saviour than she showed throughout the whole, even in her delirium as Father's prayers and blessings would always sooth her.  She was indeed a child of the Church, baptized in infancy, and at an early age taking those vows upon herself and then coming to the Lord's table, she seemed fitting herself for her early departure.  The Churches Collects were her great comfort for as she said she could always remember them when she could not her own prayers.  May the parents find that Peace which they have so many times offered to others, and may He who gave, comfort their hearts in this taking away.

In Chenango Forks [Broome Co. NY], suddenly on the 28th ult, Mr. Wesley Jackson of Triangle [Broome Co. NY], aged 65 years.

Wesley Jackson, one of the most prominent citizens of Triangle [Broome Co. NY], and father of E.B. Jackson, of this village [Greene, Chenango Co. NY], died suddenly of apoplexy, at Chenango Forks [Broome Co. NY] on Friday last.  Mr. Jackson was on his way to Binghamton and was about to go to the depot for the purpose of taking the train, when he was attacked.  He was in company with Mr. Ketchum, whose house he had just left, when he remarked to him that he could not walk.  Mr. Ketchum immediately assisted him into the house, and he lived only about thirty minutes.  He complained of a severe pain in his head and was aware that his end was near.  He remained in a conscious state, and thus, without scarcely a struggle, passed "beyond the river."  During this time his son who resides in this village had been telegraphed for, but only arrived to find his honored and beloved father already wrapped in the cold embrace of death.  Mr. Jackson was an old and highly respected citizen of Triangle, and his sudden departure from the scenes of life will leave a void in the community where he lived which cannot easily be filled.

Was the parting very bitter? / Was the hand clasp very tight? / Is a storm of tear drops falling / From a face all sad and white? / Think not of it in the future, / Calmer, fairer days are nigh; / Gaze not backward, but look onward / For a sunny "by and by."

Were some whispered words too cherished? / Was the touch of lips so sweet? / Are two souls once linked together, / Never, never more to meet? / Never here; earth's poor, vain passion, / Slowly moldering out, must die; / But its ashes shall return you / Something purer "by and by."

Was the priceless love you lavished / Sought for, played with, and then slain? / Were its crushed and quiv'ring remnants / Calmly thrown you back again; / Calmly, too, the remnants gather, / Bring them home without a sigh, / Sweet returns they yet shall bring you / In a coming "by and by."

Is your frail boat tossed and shattered, / With its sails all torn and wet? / Crossing o'er a waste of waters, / Over which your sun has set? / To the shore all calm and sunlit, / To the smooth and warm and dry, / Faith shall bear your shattered vessel / Safely, surely, "by and by."

Are the eyelids very weary? / Does the tired head long for rest? / Are the temples hot and throbbing, / And the hands together pressed? / Hope shall lay you on her bosom, / Cool the pale lips parched and dry / And shall whisper "Rest is coming, " / Rest forever, "by and by"

And when calmed and cheered and freshened, / By her soul inspiring voice, / Then look up, the heavens are bright'ning / Cease your wailing and rejoice; / Cry not out for days departed, / None will hear you, none reply; / But look on where light is breaking / O'er a brighter "by and by".

Cover up with earnest strivings / All the wayward wasted Past: / Raise a torn and blood-stained banner / O'er a victory won at last; / Fold your wet and weary pinions, / Hush your useless sob and sigh; / Rest ye, rest ye from your troubles, / In the thought of "by and by".

Deaths

HOLMES:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], Jan. 5th, of consumption, Mr. James Holmes, aged about 35 years.

HOTCHISS:  In Smithville [Chenango Co. NY], January 6th, 1871, Mr. Elisha T Hotchkiss, aged 70 years.  Thus has passed away one of the links between the past and present generation.  Mr.  H. became a resident of Smithville as early as 1805 and has been intimately connected with the history of Southern Chenango for more than half a century in all the incidents of pioneer life, which converted a howling wilderness into a beautiful field - the happy abode of civilization and refinement - he has borne a conspicuous part.  For industry and energy in those great duties, he has had an enviable reputation, and few will claim to be his superior in those desirable qualities.  The deceased was highly respected by his contemporaries, and was soften elected to discharge public duties.  Among them were those of supervisor of his town.  His meek and quiet deportment made him a worthy exemplar for all his associates, and well worthy of imitation by his survivors.  In all social relations of life, he was all that might be hoped in humanity, and his surviving widow and children, and numerous relatives, will greatly lament his loss.  His co-laborers in the field of his duties sincerely sympathize with them in the loss they have sustained.

Premature:  We learn that the announcement of the death by shooting of Eugene B. Jones, formerly of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], in Wyoming Territory, recently, is incorrect, letters having been received from him, written since that time, which state that he "still lives," and with fair prospects of remaining on earth for some time to come.

Fatal Accidents:  The Morris Chronicle [Otsego Co. NY] of last week gives the following account of two fatal accidents in that locality:

"On Tuesday, December 27th, a man named Moses Wright, living in the town of Pittsfield [Otsego Co. NY], some three miles from this village was chopping wood for Joseph Mumbulo, with a son of the latter. About half past eleven, young Mumbulo went to the house to do his chores, leaving Wright in the woods.  On returning at about one o'clock found Wright lying upon the ground dead.  From appearances he had cut a tree and in falling it had gone against a smaller one, which was carried partly down by the weight of the falling tree, when it sprung back striking him on one side of the head, killing him instantly, as appearances indicate. Wright was 26 years of age.  He leaves a wife and one child, who have the sympathy of the entire community."

"On Sunday afternoon at about five o'clock our community was startled to hear that Mr. Lonson Shaw had accidently killed himself, in the following very singular manner.  He went into the cellar-way to get a piece of ham which was hanging up there, took a knife from his pocket and cut off a slice or two, turned to step up into the room with the knife in his right hand. As he stepped up his foot slipped and he fell partly on his right side through the door, striking his right arm against the door casing, thereby giving the hand holding the knife the right position to fall upon and for it to strike his heart, which caused death almost instantly.  The scream of a child near him and his falling, brought his wife and mother to his side, and supposing he was attacked with a fit, after calling his brother, they proceeded to administer what they thought best to bring him to his consciousness, not succeeding, an examination was made and a wound over the heart was found."

On Wednesday last, Wm. T. Church of this village received a telegram informing him of the death of his son, Ransom.  the deceased, with a younger brother were at Seward Centre, Neb., where they owned and occupied a farm.  the message, announcing his death, was the first they knew that he had been ill.  His death resulted from typhoid fever.  Deceased was a member of Co. E, 89th Regt. N.Y.S. Volunteers, and served faithfully and creditably throughout the war, and was liked and respected by all who knew him.  Little over a year ago, he went to the West, and made a new home, securing warm friends, who ministered to his wants during his illness.  The remains reached this place on Saturday and the funeral was held at the Episcopal church on Sunday.  "Oh snowflakes fair! fall light as air-- / Fall light, and soft I pray, / On the treasures we all so sadly regret, / Buried and hidden away!"

At Schuylers Lake, Otsego Co. [NY], Dec. 15, Delly [Garlick] only remaining child of Rev. H. and M.A. Garlick, aged 8 years and two months, after a painful illness of fourteen weeks.  Tho' suffering beyond description during his sickness, he at last, quietly, peacefully, yes happily, fell asleep in Jesus.  His view of death as evinced by his frequent conversation upon it was of a character far beyond his years - its sting was taken away - yet how heavily does the event fall upon the bereaved parents who have been called from time to time to part with dear children, till their sixth and last is gone.  But while they mourn it is not without hope of realizing the desire earnestly expressed by Delly to "come and see him before long" in the mansion prepared by Jesus for them that love him.

Tribute to the Memory of Mrs. Theodore Mungen, Late Miss Kate Allen

She has gone from earth to a happier sphere-- / Too bright, too fragile to linger here; / She is now an angel beside the throne, / While my heart is aching, sad and lone-- /

My darling Kate has gone to her rest / In the Savior's arms--the home of the blest. / Her lovely cheek, where the rich, red glow / Of the warm blood melted through purest snow, / So sweetly blending in one bright dye, / The mingled beauties of earth and sky /

Her full dark eyes, like mirrors bright, / Reflecting truths pure, holy light-- / All, all have gone to return no more / For none come back, from the echoless shore /

My angel Kate! I have seen her move / A floating creature of joy and love, / As light as the mists of a summer morn.  / As sweet as the perfume, from roses borne, /

Till I almost looked to see her rise / Like happy thought to the clear blue skies. / Her sweet low voice, as it thrilled around, / Seemed to be only the dream of a sound; /

Softly yet wildly its notes would swell / Like the spirit tones of a silver bell.  / And though no more on earth we'll greet / Our souls in heaven will sure meet / For God, who knows, will take good care / That the souls he gave will all meet there.

William Mungen, Washington D.C., Dec. 16, 1870
