____________________

In this town [Cherry Valley, Otsego Co. NY] on the 4th inst., Roena P. [Phelon] daughter of Mr. Joseph Phelon, aged 15 years.

The recent and melancholy demise of this interesting young lady, which, though marked by no other than the ordinary circumstances of progressive disease, conveyed a shock to every nerve of sensibility in this community, should not be suffered to pass unaccompanied by a tribute to her memory, which, however humble and inadequate, as a declination of her character and remarkable genius, may serve at least as a faint expression to the general grief of which her untimely exit has been the cause.

Death is indeed a ruthless and indiscriminate destroyer.  No entreaties of friendship, no wailings of love, no cries of helpless dependency, can penetrate the leaden ear of this inexorable Monster, or limit the sweep of his mighty arm.  The nurseries of childhood and the retreats of old age, the halls of learning and the haunts of ignorance, the mansions of wealth and the hovels of want, are alike invaded by the insatiate marauder, and contribute to people the dark empire over which he reigns, in all the unrelenting terror of a hideous and universal conqueror.  In his dismal cells lie the paragon of virtue and the debauchee of vice, the wielder of the scepter and the wielder of the spade, thrown athwart each other in reckless contempt of all human distinctions.  He tears the mother from her friendless infant and turns from its lips the tide of life.  He stalks into the sacred enclosure of filial and parental tenderness, and the fairest and loveliest flower withers and dies at his touch.  Of this melancholy truth we have a striking exemplification in the sad occurrence we are now bemoaning.  If virtue, loveliness, youth and beauty - if sighs, tears, adoring friendships and agonized prayers, either all combined, could have touched the relentings or blunted the shaft of the destroyer, she had not died.  But his fearful power was triumphant. She has gone, that beauty, so fresh, so redolent with life, which the mutilating hand of disease and withering power of death could scarcely mar.  That smile so ready, so sweet, so lavish of affection, which without utterance spoke volumes of love, and called back to its artless wearer volumes of love in return.  All, all have passed away to exist no more, save in the vivid recollections of those on whose wounded hearts her image is engraven in lines that can never, no, never be effaced.

But faded and gone as are that dimpled and pearly smile and the eye that spoke so brightly and lovingly with it.  She has left upon the world the impress of a character, a soul, which by the order of nature can never be obliterated.  "The man dies, but his deeds, his influence live," and young as she was, just passing that interesting point that separates the child from the woman, singularly combining the artless simplicity of the one with the unerring proprieties and matured accomplishments of the other, she has bequeathed as a rich legacy to her companions, a model of her sex whose symmetrical and graceful proportions may be studied with profit by them, may be copied with safety by all.  To a mind vigorous and vivid in its conceptions, of rapid growth and precocious development, was united an imagination of enchanting playfulness, and a taste that was even alive to the beauties of thought, of nature and of art.  The fabled enchantress of olden time had scarcely a readier gift in the magical than she had in the useful and ornamental arts.  She had but to touch with her wand and the palace of Aladdin all that was beautiful in conception, and graceful in execution, stood forth to excite not so much her own, as the admiration of others.

We have not designed by this humble offering to kindle afresh, nor yet on the other hand, to attempt to mitigate, grateful thought the office would, the anguish of those whose hearts have been most deeply pained by this terrible dispensation.  No - sorrow like this is too keen, too peculiar, too painfully delicate to be arrayed before the cold eye of the world, though it should be by an unostentatious and sympathizing friendship.  But while we may not uncover, ever for the purpose of kind ministration, that secret, sacred, better grief, we may thus publicly award to our common humanity, the respect which one of her purest and loveliest ornaments is calculated to inspire.

Cherry Valley Gazette, Cherry Valley, NY, July 26, 1848

Marriage

In this village [Cherry Valley, Otsego Co. NY] on the 23d inst. by the Rev. G.S. Boardman, Dr. John Kellogg to Miss Henrietta M. Flint daughter of Mr. Henry Flint, all of this village.

Death

In this town [Cherry Valley, Otsego Col. NY] on the 14th inst., Mr. Henry C. Platner in the 62d year of his age.

Mr. Platner was in the enjoyment of his unusual health until about one hour before his death, when he was taken sick and before medical aid could be procured, he breathed his last in inexpressible agony.  Mr. P. came from Columbia County [NY] about 40 years ago, and has ever since resided in this town, where he has reared a numerous and respectable family of sons and daughters.  An enterprising citizen, a good neighbor, a kind husband and father, his loss will be extensively felt and deeply deplored.  The respect with which he was regarded was evinced by the very numerous assemblage of relatives and sympathizing citizens who followed him to the grave.

Called upon suddenly by the stern messenger of death, while engaged in his usual avocations, in the vigor of manhood, before the autumn of his days had passed into winter, while his heart was yet buoyant with hope and expectation, furnishes a striking illustration of the uncertainty of life and impresses upon us the solemn truth that "In the midst of life we are in death."

The Pilot, Cazenovia, NY, August 10, 1808

Cooperstown Federalist, Cooperstown, NY, October 7, 1809

Death

On the 25th of June last, the body of an unknown man was found a few rods from the Seneca Turnpike in the town of Vernon, Oneida County [NY].  A Coroner's inquest was had on the body.  The verdict of the jury was that the person was willfully murdered by some person or persons to them unknown.  Much exertion has been made to detect the assassin, but to no purpose. The deceased was about five feet ten inches high and tolerably well-proportioned and was judged to be twenty-five or thirty years of age; of a light complexion, had short hair of a dark brown color; large sandy whiskers, left by his mode of shaving, inclining towards his chin; a little below his left kneepan was a scar about one inch in length; there were other scars about his legs and thighs.  His clothing was as follows:  a dark brown mixed colored sailor coat of home manufacture and pantaloons of the same; the coat appears to have been turned; on one side there were metal buttons, but no button holes on either side; a black vest of homespun fulled cloth, with metal buttons, and button holes on each side; a linen shirt, warp filled of cotton, with linen wristbands.  There were no pockets in either of the garments above mentioned.  The deceased had with him a pack made of a shirt like the one above described.  Also, three women's stockings, two of them made of tow, the other of cotton.  A pocket handkerchief checked with red. A small black wool hat; One pair of leather suspenders; one penknife with two blades; a shaving box without any cover, and part of a razor strop.

The Printers throughout the U. States are requested to give the above a place in their papers, by which means it is hoped that the melancholy circumstance may come to the knowledge of the friends of the deceased.

MONODY

"O'er the new mound that warrants this thy grave, / A stranger muse, sweet babe! thy fate shall wail / Shall add her tribute to the passing gale. / That, plaintive, whistler as the yew trees wave; / And, whilst the moonbeam plays / Upon the glossy stream, / Or glimmers through the haze, / Thy artless, fonding ways / Shall be my theme.

Nurs'd in the bosom of parental love, / Ah! well I know the joy thy smile would bring; / Joy, such as watchful seraphs must approve, / Joy which to forfeit, who would be asking? / And when thy little feet, / To nature promptly true, / First ran thy Pa to meet, / Oh! how his heart would beat / With rapture at the view.

Oft had thy tender mother, as she prest / Thy simple form in her yet feeble arms / [unreadable] / Thy hop'd for joys are o'er, / Soon as thy babe began to lisp and fawn / It breathes no more!

And oh! sweet babe, methinks I see thee die, / And almost what thy mother felt, I feel, / Yet no! that cannot be. / She bore and nurter'd thee, / Thine infant arms did round her neck entwine, / Therefore her sorrow mine would mock'ry call; / But that I anguish know, / Witness this sigh of woe, / Witness these tears that flow, / Witness the ardent prayer I send to heaven for mine.

Full oft shall mem'ry paint the deathly scene, / And mournful fancy rise upon thy bier / And many a Father's sigh and Mother's tear; / And many a pitying child shall linger here / Each sultry noon, / And lift its hands and shake its head. / And bid its comrades softly tread / Upon the beauteous baby's bed, / Who died so soon."

The Monody was wrote by a mother.

The deceased was born in North Scituate, R.I., in the year 1789.  He came to Fly Creek in the Spring of 1810 and resided here until the day of his death.  Fifty-seven years were lived in the house in which he died.  The place was dear to him because of its many sacred associations.  He early joined the lodge of Masons at Cooperstown.  Not one member of that company, who met on that occasion, is left to drop a tear at the burial of their comrade and brother.  His mechanical genius was remarkable and at an early age he sought every opportunity to exercise and cultivate it.  Today as a monument of his genius there stands at Toddsville, the first cotton power loom built in the State of New York.  In religious belief, he was a Universalist.  He connected himself with that faith at its first introduction into this part of the country.  Amid the varied experiences of his life he remained loyal to his faith and died rejoicing in the belief that "all men will finally be saved."

Deaths

At New York on Sunday the 14th inst. whither he had gone for the benefit of his health.  Arthur Bresee Esq. of Utica [Oneida Co. NY], Clerk of the Supreme Court aged 53.

At Albany [Albany Co. NY] on Friday the 19th inst. in the 53d year of his age, the Hon. Roger Skinner District Judge of the United States for the Northern District of New York.

Died of the consumption at Walton [Delaware Co. NY] on the 23d instant, Mr. Cyrus North in the 32d year of his age.  Mr. North was well known to a very extensive circle of acquaintance as a young man of talents, of literary attainments, and of amiable and interesting deportment.  In his infancy he became blind, and he continued so ever since that period.  Notwithstanding this disability, through the aid of his friends, and more especially of his sisters, who served him in the capacity of reader and amanuensis, he made himself liberally acquainted with English literature, principally in the departments of belle's letters, history and political science.  Endowed with the faculty of a most ready perception, he acquired knowledge with surprising facility, the absolute possession of which was at all times secured to him by an exceedingly retentive memory.  The interest which his mental accomplishments and the loss of his sight created in his behalf, aided by his ambition and capabilities introduced him into an enlarged and elevated sphere of social intercourse that embraced a great number of persons of worth and distinction in the State.  He possessed a commanding influence of character.  In all matters that elicited opinion, he formed and advanced his conclusions with readiness and force, and under the control of pure motives and a sound judgment, which he retained to the last moment of his life. During the last three years of his life, he engaged in the mercantile business.  The want of sight was almost remedied by the enlarged capacity of his other senses and he transacted with surprising dispatch and accuracy most of the details of business.  During his last illness he was visited by the consultations of the gospel.  He died a Christian.  It is needless to add that the death of such a man is an afflicting bereavement.  But the grief of relatives and friends however poignant is assuaged by the reflection that his life was spent in usefulness and honor and its last moments crowned with the faith and blissful hopes of the Christian salvation.

Deaths

VAN WAGNER:  In this town [Sherburne, Chenango Co. NY], July 16, Alonzo Van Wagner aged 67 years.

Again has death entered our neighborhood and taken one of our respected citizens.  Alonzo Van Wagner, who has long been a great sufferer, died on Tuesday of this week.  As he has been a resident of this place for many years and ever a kind, obliging friend, he will be missed by many besides his immediate family who are thus sadly bereaved of a dear husband and father.

PURDY:  We learn that Thomas Purdy, Sr. of Smyrna [Chenango Co. NY] died suddenly on Tuesday morning after but an hour's illness at the advanced age of 76 years.  He was at work in the hayfield and was overcome by a supposed sunstroke.  Medical aid was called, and he was brought to so that he was able to talk.  He thought he would be able to be around in a short time.  While talking with his friends he commenced sinking and lived but a very few moments.  Heart disease is now believed to be the cause of his death.

NASH:  Mr. Alphonso D. Nash for twenty-three years foreman in the Hayes & Rider Piano factory, Norwich [Chenango Co. NY], died at his residence in that village last Thursday night, aged 55 years.  Mr. Nash was a mechanic of very superior ability, enthusiastic in his art and devoted to the interest of his employers.  Ever kind and obliging he had hosts of friends who will sadly miss his presence among them and sincerely mourn his loss.

WETHINGTON:  The old Professor, of whose declining health we have spoken several times of late, breathed his last on Saturday morning. the Prof. had been a resident of this village [New Berlin, Chenango Co. NY] between twenty and thirty years and had, up to the time of his illness, successfully conducted a barber shop.  Something like eight months ago he began to show signs of failing health, and it was soon consumption had claimed him for a victim.  During the past six months he has made his home with E. Johnson, the proprietor of the new and popular barber shop in the Cady Block, who generously harbored and took care of him as long as he lived.  The funeral services were held in the Hall on Sunday afternoon and what there was left of the old Professor was conveyed to the cemetery accompanied by a large concourse of citizens and acquaintances.  Of his early history we know but little.  besides being a good barber, the Professor was a good musician, as well as an artist of more than ordinary merit, and occupied his spare time in painting portraits of different personage.  He has left a son and daughter to mourn their loss.  New Berlin Gazette

Deaths

At Augusta, Georgia on the 11th July last, Mr. James Maxwell son of Mr. Alexander Maxwell of this town [Delhi, Delaware Co. NY], aged 27 years.

On the 23d ult. at his residence in Greenbush [Rensselear Co. NY], Dr. John Downs in the 44th year of his age.  In the death of this amiable man, a bosom companion is bereft of one whose merit as a husband had secured her best and strongest affections; an extensive circle of relations have sustained an irreparable loss; and society is deprived of the talents and faithful exertions of a skillful, successful and generous physician.  The memory of Dr. Downs will long be embalmed in the bosoms of all who best knew him.  His life was desirable, his death peaceful, and it may be confidently hoped that his eternity will be glorious.  Albany Argus.

On the 30th ult. Mrs. Mary Downs consort of the late Dr. Downs of Greenbush [Rensselaer Co. NY], in the 39th year of her age.  The uniform piety of her life, the peace and tranquility of her death, speak volumes in her praise and will remain an imperishable monument, sacred to her memory.  Her remains were conveyed to the tomb on the Sabbath following, attended by an extensive circle of relatives and friends, whose tears and devoted attention, expressed their tenderest sympathies and their undissembled respect.  Mrs. Downs survived her husband only seven days.  "They were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their deaths, they were not divided."

Death

At Walton [Delaware Co. NY] on the 10th inst. Mr. Abraham Ogden in the 54th year of his age.  Mr. Ogden came to this County in the infancy of its settlement - industrious, persevering and capable, his fortunes were made to keep pace with its gradual and certain prosperity.  But from a prolonged career of deserving success, from the enjoyment of that which he might look upon as the fair reward of honest exertions, he was suddenly taken by an incurable malady.  About four years ago he was attacked by peroxisens of the epileptic species and little since that time has he known of life but its anguish. Death has a last come to him a relief, and to his friend but a secondary affliction.  The society, so large a share of which he has filled as a citizen and man of business, the family circle, from which he is bereft, and whose tender relations he sustained with such exemplary propriety and affection will appreciate the loss with sincere regret and sorrow.

Death

CARPENTER:  In Wood's Corners [Chenango Co. NY] July 10th, Frances E. [Carpenter], wife of Earl Carpenter, aged 26 years. [Oxford Times, Oxford, NY, July 17, 1878]

On Wednesday morning, soon after the hour of midnight, Mrs. Frances Carpenter, wife of Earl Carpenter, quietly and peacefully entered into the spirit land in a full consciousness that all was well.  Though not unexpected, the announcement came upon our community with fearful suddenness.  For more than a year she has suffered under the gnawings of a cancer, and from the commencement of her illness it was too painfully apparent that she could not get well.  On the 2d of January, she was removed to the home of her father, at Wood's Corners, and on the 16th day of that month, her only daughter, Lillie, an infant, died of croup, which added greatly to her sorrows.  The funeral was held at the house of James Brown, Thursday afternoon, where a very large number of friends met to pay their last tribute of respect to the sacred memory of the deceased.  The loss will be keenly felt by all who knew her, and the warmest sympathies of this entire people mingle with the grief of the bereaved.

"Her languishing head is at rest, / Its thinking and aching are o'er. / Her quiet and immovable breast, / Is Heav'd by affliction no more. / Her heart is no longer the seat / Of trouble and torturing pain. / It ceases to flutter and beat, / It never shall move again."

PENDLETON:  William Pendleton of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY] died at his residence on Wednesday morning last, at the advanced age of eighty-three years.

Mr. Pendleton was a genial old man, full of kind memories of the earlier times and the people with whom he then associated.  He was highly esteemed and respected by our entire community, as well as those in which he formerly resided.  He was the lifelong friend of Daniel S. Dickerson, though in politics he could not go with him in his latter days and remained as he had lived, always a staunch Democrat in principle.  He was perhaps the oldest member of the Masonic fraternity in our county, having been a Mason upward of sixty years.  His pleasant, genial countenance will be missed from our streets and his pleasant greeting to all alike will be heard no more.  He was the father of the late Mrs. B. Slater of this village.
