Died:  At Homer [Cortland Co., NY], on the 13th ult., Dr. Ebenezer Munger, formerly of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], in the 64th year of his age.

Died:  In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], on the 28th ult., Mr. David Brown, Jr., aged 24 years.

Died:  At the residence of her husband, in Syracuse [Onondaga Co., NY], on Friday evening, Oct. 30, Catharine D. [Randall], wife of N. Randall, aged 45 years.  In these few words we record the decease of one to whom a large circle of friends were devotedly attached.  Very many hearts, not only in her native State, but in other parts of our Union, will sympathize with the bereaved family upon the announcement to them of this mournful event. They will feel that they have each of them lost a friend; that one of the fondest of their earthly associations has been sundered.  Seldom or never have we attempted to speak of the death of an acquaintance with such feelings of sadness as now oppress us.  The friend of our earlier years of maturity has gone.  One with whom we had often taken sweet intercourse and who had endeared herself to us by many kind offices, has closed her earthly career.  But while we mourn our own loss, we remember that there are those upon whose hearts this stroke has fallen with a pang of much deeper intensity. An affectionate husband has lost from his embrace the wife of his early manhood and the partner of his bosom for more than 26 years.  Fond parents weep over the departure of their first-born--a kind and dutiful daughter. A surviving sister and a brother lament the loss of one around whose memory their earliest associations are fondly clustered.  A son and two daughters by marriage, one of them still clad in the habiliments of her early widowhood, have been called to take a last look upon the countenance of a mother.

We attempt not to describe the throbs of anguish which rend their breasts.  But not these alone are afflicted by this sad event.  A large circle of more distant relatives and a larger number of acquaintances and friends, each bear a share in the general bereavement.  Of a temperament far more social and active than ordinary, she had a rare faculty of exciting the deep interest and friendship of those with whom she associated. A brief interview with her has often laid the foundation of a permanent and friendly intimacy. Each of these will mourn the breaking of a bright link in the chain of friendship.  Nor yet here will the influence of this event cease to be felt. The remarkable mental activity of the deceased was not limited by the precincts of her family connexion or the wider boundaries of her social intercourse.  While she ordered with remarkable neatness and accuracy the affairs of her own household, the outdoings of her expansive benevolence reached many who had known her only by the hearing of the ear.  The cries of suffering and the wants of the needy were not unheeded by her.  Even amid the pains of her severe and protracted sickness she ceased not to devise plans for the good of the unfortunate of her race.  Many a poor family in Syracuse will cherish her memory in grateful remembrance, and will feel that they too are called to mourn.

Mrs. Randall was the daughter of Judge Monell of Greene, Chenango Co., N.Y.  She was born in that town on the 28th of Oct. 1812. She was married to Mr. N. Randall, May 4th, 1831.  In 1847 she was brought to the borders of the grave by a disease of the stomach.  Her health from this time forward was never firm, though she was not permanently confined to the house until about one year previous to her death.  Much of the time during these months her sufferings were intense.  Her mental faculties, however, were unclouded to the last moment of her life.  She was fully conscious for several days that her end was near. She freely expressed her wishes in regard to the arrangements of her funeral, bade an affectionate farewell to her family and friends, and audibly committed herself to the care of her Savior and Almighty Friend. She calmly breathed her last at 7 o'clock on the evening of the day above mentioned.  She was buried on the Sunday following in accordance with the ceremonies of the Episcopal Church of which she had been a communicant for the last 9 years of her life.  Cortland County Republican.

Died:  In Coventry [Chenango Co., NY], on the 27th of September, Mr. Harvey Judd, aged 91 years.  Seldom are children permitted to enjoy the presence of a venerable parent for so long a period as those who gathered at the happy home of the aged Christian, whose decease is herewith registered.  Time had but in a slight degree impaired the vigor of his mental faculties, and but a few days of sickness preceded his departure to the rest of the sainted dead.  Warm in his love for the Chruch, in whose armaments and institutions his soul was nourished for heaven, he rejoiced in the privilege of joining where he was enabled to do so in her sweet communion and service.  Of cheerful temperament and simple hearted piety, enjoying in the kind ministries of his children all needed earthly comforts, he lived for the world of blessedness, whither he has gone.  He recalled in his experience the language applied to one of the great patriarchs of an older dispensation, "Then shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age."

On Wednesday morning last, in the 20th year of her age, Mrs. Miranda Gear, wife of the Rev. E.G. Gear, Rector of St. John's Church, in this village [Ithaca, Tompkins Co, NY].  The destroying angel has executed a commission which has called the tender mother, the affectionate wife and the sincere friend, in the bloom of life, and in the midst of usefulness, to walk through the dark valley and shadow of death, without fear of its terrors; for its paths were illuminated by the countenance of the Saviour.  During a very severe illness, patience and resignation rose superior to the pains of the body and when the spirit obtained its release and winged its way to the mansion of eternal rest, then was it that her friends were left in doubt whether most to mourn her loss, or rejoice at her happy exchange of time for eternity.  Ithaca Journal Jan. 25, 1826

Died:  At Utica [Oneida Co., NY], Nov. 5th, Mrs. Nancy Bolles, wife of the late Mr. Elias Bolles, aged 67 years.  Those who many years lived with Mrs. Bolles in the kindly intimacy of friends and neighbors, know very well the loss her family have been called to mourn in this last bereavement.  As a wife, she was the "virtuous woman whose price is above rubies;" as a mother realized the poet's words:  "There is in this world no fount of strong and deathless feeling, save in a Mother's love."  No sacrifice of ease or comfort was too great for her to make, for her family, or other's good.  The friend at the fireside or the beggar at the gate were cheered and comforted by words and deeds springing from a warm and loving heart.  She has been many times a sad sufferer from physical maladies, but the last few months were darker than all others to herself and children, from mental tortures which neither affliction or medical skill could dissipate or relieve.  Poor wearied nature at length sank under the fearful ordeal, and she has gone to the land where there is no sickness, or wasting sorrow, leaving to those who loved her, this memorial for imitation.  "She hath done what she could, / for us in the gloom of this autumn sky, / She lives where the endless summits lie, / Above the clouds of this dismal night. / Where the stars shine on in their homes of light."

Died:  In Smithville [Chenango Co., NY], on the 8th inst., Mrs. Catharine M. Henry, aged 53 years.  The deceased was a long and patient sufferer from a severe and lingering disease.  It was evident to herself some time before her departure that death was inevitable, and she dreaded not his summons.  Of a naturally amiable disposition, indulgent to her children, gentle and affectionate in all the relations of life, she has left a chasm in the household circle never again to be filled.  Beloved by all who knew her, many gathered to her funeral to testify their sympathy and respect.  Seldom have we witnessed so long a funeral train as wound its way to the church, and grave, whither her remains were borne; seldom have we so much felt the joy which brightens the grave in the hopeful doctrine of the Resurrection, as on that occasion the eye stretched over the chequered beauty of the autumn foliage in the brilliancy of its decay.  Such is the Christian's "loveliness in death, / That parts not quite with parting breath; / But beauty with that fearful bloom, / That hue which haunts it to the tomb, / Expression's last receding ray, / A gilded halo hovering round decay, / The farewell beam of feeling past away; / Spark of that flame, perchance of heavenly birth / Which gleams, but warms no more it cherished earth."

Vital Records - 1813 & 1857

 Oxford Gazette, December 7, 1813

Died:  At Preston [Chenango Co., NY], on the 4th of September last, Miss Melissant Punderson, daughter of Deacon Punderson, AEt. 16.  Miss Punderson was keeping school in an adjoining town, when hearing of the illness of a beloved sister, her ever ready feelings took the alarm, and with the many kindnesses of which she was capable, she hoped to be an instrument in restoring her sister in health to her aged parents.  How mysterious are the ways of Providence!  Her sister was indeed raised.  But the amiable Melissant was attacked with the disease; and after a sickness of sixteen days, her pure spirit ascended to the GOD which gave it, and her body was consigned to the house appointed for all the living.

Died:  On the 22d ult. Mr. Charles Punderson, only son of Deacon Punderson, AEt 24.  In the death of Mr. Punderson we have an evidence of the lively faith which can actuate those who place their hopes on the God of Israel.  Among the many proofs which he gave of an interest in the Redeemer, a few moments before his death he broke out in the following animating lines:  "Now to the wisdom of my lord and master, Do I commit all that I have or wish for; Sweetly as babes sleep will I give my life up, when call'd to yield it."

Died:  On the next day (24th) and while the remains of her husband were interring, Mrs. Polly Punderson, AEt 23.  All of the typhus fever.  Mr. and Mrs. Punderson have left three young children to lament their loss.

Died:  in South Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] on the 27th of July, of Hepatization of the lungs, H.D. Spencer, M.D., aged 34 years.  Doctor Spencer, was born in the town of Lisle, now Triangle, and was a son of the late Dr. G.L. Spencer of that town.  He graduated at the Berkshire Medical Institute in the fall of 1848, and commenced the practice of medicine in company with his father where he continued until 1852, when he removed to South Bainbridge where he died.  Doctor Spencer possessed all the qualities in an eminent degree requisite for usefulness both as a physician and citizen.  He had already secured the confidence of a large circle of friends, and was rapidly rising in his personal attainments.  About one year previous to his death he was called to part with his companion, who left two small children dependent on him for guidance and protection.  Although he has left an aged mother, brothers and a sister, to mourn, yet they have the great consolation that they do not mourn "as they without hope."
