A Vigorous Old Age - What a Man Nearly 92 years old can do:  We heard a few days ago of something worth putting in the paper.  It is as follows:  Mr. Nicholas Carman, who will be  ninety-two years old on the 30th day of April, has since the 1st of December last, cleared a ten acre lot for Wm. Morris, in the town of Vestal [Broome Co., NY], chopping down all the trees and cutting it into wood and rails, and clearing off all the under brush, receiving assistance from no one.  The wood from the lot is about fifty cords and the rails are between 3,000 and 4,000 in number.  This may well be considered a most remarkable achievement in these latter days.  Mr. Carman was born in Dutchess County, and is of low Dutch parentage.  He has resided in this (Broome) county upwards of 70 years.  He appears hale and hearty and bids fair to live to his hundredth year or more.  Bing. Rep.

Died:  In this village on the 17th inst. after a short illness, John McKenzie [Gomes], third son of Mandeville and Sarah Gomes, aged 17 years.  "We stood beside him yesterday, / Freshness was on thy brow. / It's but a piece of nerveless clay / On which we're gazing now."

Died:  In Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], on the 9th inst.,  Mrs. Lovina Baker, aged 94 years.

Died:  At Cedar Run, Lycoming Co., Pa., April 5, 1850, Emily H. [Fish], wife of Mr. D.A. Fish, and daughter of Eli and Elizabeth Haynes, formerly of Greene, Chenango Co., N.Y.  A large circle of friends and relatives are brought to mourn the loss of this amiable lady. Benevolent and affable to all, kind and affectionate to friends; zealous in the cause of Christianity, she lived to gladden the circle of her acquaintance and passed away to enjoy the hope, she so fervently maintained while on earth.  Amid her intense suffering for the four years she was ill, not a murmur or complaint passed her lips, ever firmly relying on God to give strength and grace for the day of her suffering, and at the last, while friends stood around her death bed weeping, she says "Dear ones, do not weep for me, for I am going home to Jesus."

Died:  In Greene [Chenango Co., NY] on the 10th inst., Mrs. Laura [Hotchkiss], wife of Mr. Erastus Hotchkiss, aged 36 years.

Died:  At his residence in Columbus [Chenango Co., NY], on the 8th inst., Mr. Reuben Tillotson, aged 63 years.  Mr. T. was universally respected as a citizen; his life being marked by the strictest integrity, and was highly beloved in his own family.  He died in the triumphs of living faith, often in his sickness expressing a desire to depart and be with Christ, and we have strong consolation that our loss is his infinite gain.  "An honest man is the noblest work of God."

Oxford Times, April 13, 1859

We give the following notice of the death of Chauncey Morgan from the Binghamton Daily Republican.  The last visit of Mr. Morgan to our village, was at the time of the Academy Jubilee when his familiar face and ready recollection of early village history was a source of great pleasure to the few survivors of that early period present upon that interesting occasion.

Our much respected fellow citizen, Chauncey Morgan, whose recent death we were compelled to briefly notice, is deserving of a more lengthened tribute to his memory; for while we mourn his death, it is with great satisfaction that we remember his many virtues.

Mr. Morgan was of Welch descent and the son of Gaius Morgan, for many years a resident of our town.  He was born at West Springfield, Massachusetts, from which place he removed in early life.

The deceased was bred in a Printing Office, and to the last moment of his life cherished a deep regard for the noble Profession he had chosen.  During the war with Great Britain he established and edited at Chenango Point, now Binghamton, the "Broome County Patriot."  Soon after, he removed to Oxford, Chenango County, [NY] where he conducted a spirited paper, called "The Oxford Gazette."  During all the dark and stormy period which followed the Declaration of War, Mr. Morgan's pen, voice and action were earnestly engaged in the cause of his country.  He was a man of the People and the masses looked to him as an Advocate and Champion.

At one time he held the office of Deputy Sheriff and the only complaint ever made against him was the allegation that he was kind, forbearing and merciful to unfortunate debtors.

Mr. Morgan was eminently genial and his sparkling wit and ready humor never failed "to set the table in a roar."

During the last few years he has resided with his son, Henry A. Morgan, Esq., of the City of New York, but within the past year came back to Binghamton, where he commenced the real business of life, and here, surrounded by kindred and friends, watched and tended by the affectionate solicitude of a daughter, and mourned by all who knew him, at the ripe, full age of sixty-eight years, he sank to his everlasting rest.

A Revolutionary Soldier - Is He the Last in the County?:  We saw on the 4th inst., Joseph Foote, of Coventry [Chenango Co., NY], who was here to execute his pension papers.  Mr. Foote was born October 1760, and will be 99 year's of age next October.  He resided a great part of his life after the revolution at Austerlitz in Columbia co.  Some years since he came to Coventry to reside with his sons.  He was through the whole of the Revolution in different capacities, and witnessed the final triumph of our arms at Yorktown.  His mental faculties are yet good.  He does not "stoop for age," and has quite a martial appearance in his movements.  It is thought by many that he is the only survivor in the county of that heroic band who achieved our independence.  If not so, let us hear from our contemporaries.

Burned to Death:  We learn that Elizabeth Bussy of Sandford [Broome Co., NY], about four miles from this village, was burned to death by her clothes taking fire on the 3d inst.  The girl was about 11 years old; her parents were absent, visiting a brother's children, who were sick and this girl, with three others younger than herself, were left at home, and while she was at work about the stove about 9 A.M., her clothes caught fire, when she ran out of the house to put it out with snow, but as soon as the door was opened, the wind, which was high, blew the fire into a blaze all over her, and although the school mistress of the district ran to her assistance and folded her in a blanket as soon as possible, Dr. OT. Bundy, who was immediately sent for, informs us that her skin was burned to a crisp all over her body, except where her skirts were fastened about the waist. She lingered in great agony until about 7 P.M., the same evening, being perfectly sensible all the time.  Deposit Democrat.

Death of Henry Barnes, Jr A.B.:  On Thursday last, our community were called to mourn the death of one of our most valuable citizens, Henry Barnes, Jr. Principal of the Oxford Academy. The Sunday before, Mr. Barnes spoke of singular sensations to his immediate friends.  Monday, disease exhibited fearful and rapid progress, tending to the head, taking possession of the brain reducing its victim wholly to its sway, and baffling by its vagueness and complicity all efforts to arrest its course, until its fatal termination.  Mental aberration succeeded, but his wanderings were towards his scholars and was developed to the last, in a sad but admirable anxiety for those whose educational interests had so recently occupied his time and energies.  His age was thirty.

Mr. Barnes had nearly completed his second term as Principal of the Academy, securing the increasing respect and affections of his scholars, and the confidence of the community.  He was earnest, active and persevering in season and out of season, and his scholars and their welfare, and his school and its success, were foremost in his mind, engrossed his thoughts, and nerved him with an energy and an enthusiasm which were felt by all, who came within the circle of his influence. To the usual routine of the class recitation, Mr. Barnes frequently added the duties of a public lecturer, with a grace, beauty and strength which much enlarged the sphere of his usefulness, and enabled him at the same time to instruct parent and child.  Many will recollect the appropriate address with which he commenced his labors among us, and the question "wither bound!" its burden and its theme, which he has so soon and so solemnly answered,  in his own case, will recur with tenfold earnestness to those so lately sitting as his disciples.  How all unguessed his death, it seems but yesterday that with eye flashing with joy and a heart throbbing with patriotic emotion, he invited us to join at the Academy, in honoring the Washington Anniversary.  But when it came, the closed halls of the Academy, the darkened windows, the useless festal wreaths and the hush of music, were sadly eloquent with impending sorrow.  His funeral was attended at the Presbyterian Chruch, Sunday afternoon, by a large concourse, and the services were unusually solemn and impressive.  He sleeps embalmed in the tears of faithful, loving scholars, and sorrow stricken parents, and the solemn question, "whither bound," has ere this, we trust, found for him a joyful response in Heaven.

Died:  At her residence, in this village [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], on Wednesday afternoon, February 18th, Mrs. Sally Farnham, aged 78 years and nine months.  Mrs. Farnham was the sister of Francis and Samuel Balcom, and the last of a large family.  She came here with her parents in 1796, was therefore one of the first inhabitants, fully acquainted with all the incidents of this settlement, sharing in the privations and hardships of pioneer life, and learning to appreciate every step made toward the educational and religious advantages of the present day.  She heard wolves howl in the wilderness which has since been converted into fertile fields and broad meadows, seen rocks and stumps vanish, and give place to pleasant homes.  Spire after spire successively point heavenward, and the village she loved so well, grow from a few isolated dwellings, to its present dimensions.  She came soon after her marriage to live in the home where she died, there buried her husband and reared to manhood, a family of six sons, two of whom have within a year preceded her to the grave.  Devoted to the care and well being of her family, she has yet been a living example of what may be accomplished in spare moments in cultivating the intellectual faculties, becoming conversant with the literature of the day, at home upon all topics of interest, her companionship was sought by young and old, while her wise counsel, and ready sympathy, will never be forgotten by those who sought for them in perplexity or sorrow.  She saw many whom she loved go before her, yet amid the pain and weariness of years, her faith remained unshaken, her mind unclouded, and unable to attend religious services in the Chruch to which she belonged, she could trust in "Him, who doeth all things well."  Her departure leaves a painful void, not only in the family circle, but in the more extended one of friends and neighbors and the home where she lived, loved and died, is consecrated by sacred and pleasant associations.

"On a sick couch, at morn's first gleam / A dying sufferer lay-- / A weary pilgrim, whose life stream / was ebbing fast away. / The lines of age were written deep / Upon the once fair brow -- / The eye its beauty could not keep / Its light was fading now.

The Summer suns of seventy years / And more had o'er her shone, / And life--that scene of smiles and tears / No longer was her own; / A voice seemed speaking in each sigh / A wish to see the shore / Where she should never fear to die / But meet thee gone before."

Died:  In Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], on the 13th inst. Mr. Josiah Ransford, aged 59 years.

Died:  In Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], on the 14th inst. Mr. William M. Leach, of the Noyes House, aged 49 years.

Died:  In Smithville [Chenango Co., NY], on the 16th inst. James R. Norris, aged 17 years.

The Brooks Poisoning Case:  The Anderson boy, who has been confined in the Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] jail for several months past charged with administering poison to his employer, Mr William Brooks, sometime last spring, has had  his trial deferred till the September term, in consequence of the absence of the principal witness, the chemist, who pronounced the ingredient mingled with the tea grounds, to be arsenic.  A bench warrant was dispatched by the hands of an officer to Albany, to bring the witness to Court, but he could not be found. The prisoner, who is pale and emaciated, a sad picture of haggard wretchedness, will hence be compelled to lie in jail all summer waiting for his trial, which he expressed an earnest wish to have come off at this term.  New Berlin Pioneer

Early History of Greene, Chenango County, New York - Part 6 - 1857

Recollections of the Early Settlement of the Town of Greene

Chenango American, Greene, NY, January 7, 1858

Part 6

The social and moral habits of the pioneers of this town is supposed to be a fair sample of that of other settlers in a country heavily timbered.  They mostly came from the New England States, though many of them had settled in the eastern counties of this state [NY].  They came poor.  Few were able even to make a small payment for their lands.

Much want and even sufferings was the consequence.  But common necessities produced common sympathy.  They evinced to the new comers the spirit of genuine hospitality and in all the relations of life, from the raising of the log cabin to the supplying the destitute at their tables, they exhibited more the spirit of family affection than of mere neighborhood sympathy.

Their only resources were derived from the manufactory of shingles for the Baltimore markets, or in felling the trees of the forest cutting and burning them, and from the ashes making black salts for an eastern market, and until they could have time to clear the land and raise food from the earth, they were very dependent on their more fortunate neighbors. This appeal was responded to with alacrity "not grudgingly" but freely even to the dividing the last loaf.  In this respect at least they exhibited Christian principles that would not unfavorably contrast with their more fortunate and refined descendants.

The first grist-mill was erected on the creek about one mile north of C. Sharp's in 1794.  It was built by Abraham Storm and Henry Vorse.  The second was by Deacon Richards, a short distance south of Coventryville, in 1797.  The first saw mill was erected by Mr. Sharp, near the former mill in 1795.

The first tavern was by Conrod Sharp in 1794.  The second by Aden Elliott, in 1795.

The first store opened in this town was by Jotham Parker, in the south part of what is now Coventry in 1799.  the second was by Elisha Smith in the village in 1801.

The first framed house was erected by Thomas Wattles, as a public house on the spot now occupied by the "Chenango House" [in 1857].  This was in 1803.  A store on the opposite corner was built by Mr. Smith the following year.

Greene Post Office was established in 1806.  David Finn was the first Post Master.  The mail route was from Cooperstown to Oxford and then to Chenango Point (now Binghamton) semi-monthly.  The first mail carrier was Charles Thorp.

A weekly mail was carried on horseback on this route and also on the east and west route, as late as 1819, when a semi-weekly stage route was formed from Utica to Binghamton.

In 1822, a tri-weekly stage route was formed from Catskill to Ithaca, which soon became a very general thoroughfare for the traveling public. This was regarded as one of the best stage routes in the State.  But the advent of the Iron Rail and the Steam Engine, soon diverted the human tide to other channels and left it in solitude.

The village of Greene was laid out under the direction of Elisha Smith, the local agent on the Hornby estate in 1806.  It was named Hornby and has ever been the residence of the local agent on the "Chenango Triangle."  The Post Office being called Greene, the recorded name of Hornby was never brought into general use.  It [Greene] is situated on both sides of the Chenango near the center of the town.  It is regarded by strangers as possessing peculiar attractions, and is surpassed by few villages of its size in its beauty of location and its scenery of surrounding country.  It was incorporated in 1842, and contains about 1000 inhabitants.

East Greene is situated six miles up the river, is a pleasant village of about thirty houses.

The Chenango Canal which passes through this town was completed in 1836.  It is the principle channel for local exports and imports. The Chenango Forks Depot, on the Syracuse and Binghamton Railroad, is eight miles from the village. This brings us within twelve hours of the city of New York, and by means of a daily freight line our merchants have all the benefits of early transmission through this channel.

The surface of this town is broken and uneven.  The intervals on its streams are broad and fertile.  The gradual slope of its hills rendered nearly every acre susceptible of cultivation.  A large portion of its cultivated surface is devoted to grazing. The farmers are principally dairymen, and butter is the chief article of transportation.  In addition to this article for transportation, cattle, beef, pork, oats, corn and wool make quite large items in the yearly products of our farms.

This town was originally one of the best lumbering regions in the State.  Pine, hemlock, oak, maple and other choice timber made up much of its forest.  The early inhabitants devoted their energies to the manufacture of lumber which was taken on the spring flood tide to the Baltimore markets.  Millions of feet of lumber were annually taken to tide water from this town, and it was not until the supply became measurably exhausted that the inhabitants turned their attentions to agriculture. The transition was doubtless accelerated by the opening of the Chenango Canal, which afforded a convenient outlet for agricultural products.  Previous to this period we were in a very sequestered position  Our imports from tide water were brought from Catskill, a distance of one hundred and twenty miles.

The topographical and geological items of the town of Green are as follows:

The surface of the country is hilly, but not mountainous.  The valleys are deep, beautiful and fertile and the hills are susceptible of cultivation to their very summits.  The underlying rocks are of the transition class and belong partly to the Erie division of the "New York System," and partly to the Catskill group or old red sand stone.  Rock, of the Catskill, Ithaca and Chemung groups are found in the town and of course the fossils which are the distinguishing characteristics of these groups are also found abundantly. The valleys are alluvial and over the hills in many places are found "transported materials" from other groups such as Oriskany Sandstone, Tully Limestone and even boulders of the primary class such as gneiss and granite, all which have been apparently brought from their northern locations by some unknown agency.

There are no minerals of course to be found and indeed none could be expected, at least in any quantities. A little sulphuret of iron is occasionally found among the rocks, sometime a mere trace of lime and in a few instances scales of anthracite.

A few Springs are found slightly impregnated with Sulphur.

There is nothing grand or imposing in the geological character of the town, and it is only interesting as furnishing those organic remains which serve to show that the "great globe itself" has undergone strange and terrific changes at a time before the "morning stars sang together."

This town is emphatically one of the most healthy regions of the State.  Prevailing diseases are rare, and since the drainage and cultivation of marshy places miasmatic influences seem to have disappeared. Consumption is a prolific cause of death.  This disease however is usually traceable to hereditary causes and not to endemic influences.

The first news paper established in this town was the Chenango Patriot, in 1830.  It was published by Nathan Randall.  It was neutral in politics.  This was succeeded in 1833 by the Chenango Democrat by the same gentleman.  It continued about two years.  In 1852 the Chenango News, a neutral paper was established by A.T. Boynton.  The Chenango American was established by Denison & Fisher in 1855.  At this time [1858], it is in the third year of its publication, and "in full tide of successful experiment."

Ah!  where's my pretty blossom gone, / In which my heart delighted; / My little bud, was scarcely blown, / Ere cruel winds it blighted.

I saw it droop its little head, / I saw its beauties languish, / I saw its tints begin to fade, / Which filled my heart with anguish.

I still had hopes it would revive, / And all its charms recover, / Until I saw the foe arrive, / It from my heart to sever.

O earth, thy charms yield no relief / To this poor aching bosom; / In pensive sighs I'll vent my grief; / For thee, my absent blossom.

O father! mother! cease to mourn, / Look up to this bright bower, / Behold what beauties now adorn / Thy once poor dying flower.

A Story of Crime:  The Norwich papers give detailed accounts of the murder of a daughter of James Heady, of that town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], about 16 years of age, by a woman named Monroe, residing in Houston, Texas. The girl was taken thither by the woman's husband (who was in this vicinity on a visit) last Spring.  Heady expected to follow them soon, to reside there, being urged to do so by Monroe, who was a relative.  Hearing of the girl's death Heady instituted inquiries which led to the arrest of the woman and her conviction of murder in the 2d degree.  The cause of the murder is a mystery.
