We regret to learn of the death of Lysander W. Kelley which took place at his residence in the town of Maryland [Otsego Co. NY] on Wednesday last.  Mr. W. was elected Coroner on the Republican ticket last fall.  Rep. & Democrat

George Van Nort, living near the Three Mile Point, was drowned in the Lake on Friday evening last.  He started to walk on the ice and fell through.  He leaves a wife and several children in needy circumstances.  Rep. &Democrat

Death

In Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] on the 5th inst. Martin Van Leuvan aged 53.

The deceased had been attending Court at Cooperstown, where he was taken sick and died.  Mr. Van Leuven was a man well known throughout the County having been for a number of years one of the Constables of Oneonta. "Thus, our neighbors one by one pass away and the mourners go about the streets."  May the living remember "that man's days are as the grass of the field, which today is and tomorrow is cast into the oven."

In Portlandville [Otsego Co. NY] on the 7th inst. Sarah Annette [Bishop] only child of Allen and Eliza Bishop in the 16th year of her age.  Though called suddenly from the embrace of afflicted parents, they are comforted with the hope, that she has gone to that land where Death and the tomb can divide hearts no more.

On the death if Diadama M. Cooke only child of Mrs. Sabra Cooke, who died August 10th, 1859, aged 17 years 11 months and 6 days.

She dies! The widow's only child, / And yields her spirit reconcil'd / To him who gave and takes away,  To show how short is earthly stay.

She dies before the care of life, / In Mid-day labors, pain and strife, / Had furrowed o'er her brow with care, / Which riper years are doomed to share.

She dies! a warning to the youth, / To turn to God and love the truth. / May those who loved her spirit here, / Prepare for death with pious fear.

She dies! but lo! a rising day / Awakes the dead, and leads the way; / When saints and sinners all shall stand / Before the judge, at his command         E.B.

Death of William H. Bissell

Gov. Bissell was born in Hartwick, Otsego County, New York, April 25th, 1814.  He was self educated, attending school in the summer and teaching school in the winter.  He subsequently studied medicine, and graduated in 1834, at the Medical College in Philadelphia. Removing to Illinois, he practiced his profession there until 1840, when he was elected to the State Legislature.  He then changed the medical profession for the legal profession, studied for the Bar and was admitted, and after a brief but successful practice was elected a Prosecuting Attorney in 1844.

The Mexican War which now broke out, induced him again to change his occupation.  He gave up the forum for the field, volunteered for the Army and served with distinction, especially at Buena Vista, as Colonel of the 2d Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. Returning from Mexico, he was elected to congress, where he served from 1849 to 1855.  In 1856 he was elected Governor of Illinois.

In all these positions he has discharged the duties devolved upon him with fearless energy and sagacity.  His many noble qualities had surrounded him with a host of personal friends, who rejoiced in his growing reputation and influence and had hoped to aid in his elevation to still higher posts of usefulness.

On Friday last Mr. James Wilson started from his home for the village of Lodi.  A gentleman on his way to this village saw him, as he supposed, sitting by the side of the road, asleep.  He endeavored to attract his attention by calling, but failing to do so went to him and on feeling of his pulse found him dead.  He had probably died from a disease of the heart, Cherry Valley Gazette, 25th

We are called upon to record one of the most horrible calamities ever witnessed in this section of the country.  On Friday might last, a man by the name of Briggs, residing some two miles south of Davenport Centre [Delaware Co. NY], with his wife, were absent from home, leaving at home six children and about 10 o'clock the house was discovered to be on fire, and the oldest of the children, a girl about 18 years of age, went upstairs to arouse the other children, who were there sleeping, when the roof of the house fell in, burying her and four others, where they were burned to death, only one little boy escaping out of a family of six children.  Reader, what must be the feelings of those parents, as they arrived at the spot where but a few hours before stood their dwelling and around its hearth were assembled a loving little band of brothers and sisters all now burned to a crisp and lying buried beneath the ruins of the house.  You may think you can sympathize with them, but it is impossible. We do not learn as to the origin of the fire.  Everything in the house was burned and we understand that in consequence of this sad calamity, Mrs. Briggs, the mother of the children, has been bereft of her reason and is now a raving maniac. Truly, the surviving ones are subjects of sympathy.

Deaths

In Centerville, Onondaga Co. [NY] on the 31st ult of inflammation on the lungs, Lancing Strait in the 39th year of his age.  He was brought to his former home, West Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] and was buried on the 4th inst.

We learn that on Thursday the 31st ult. a boy named George Couse son of Fred Couse, who resides near Osterhoudt's Sawmill on the Ouleout Creek in the town of Davenport [Delaware Co. NY] was crushed to death by a log rolling over him.  He was on the logs which were laying on a side hill when the blocking gave way and he fell between them and they rolled over him, causing death immediately.  He was 15 years of age.

On Wednesday inst. as a son of Mr. Samuel Seeley, aged about 17 years, was engaged in drawing logs in the road leading from Delhi to Franklin [Delaware Co. NY], from some cause he fell or was thrown violently to the ground, striking his breast against a stone or stump, causing almost instant death.  Unadilla Times

She saw the bright, angelic face, / An answering smile was given, / Then passed she to His soft embrace, / Who said: "of such is Heaven."

In New York, on the 10th ult. after a lingering illness, Rebecca [Cropsey] in the 46th year of her age.

On the 28th October last, at Paris, France, Mrs. Clara B. Catlin the wife of George Catlin, esq., the eminent traveler, so distinguished for his researches into Indian antiquities of America and so universally known and respected in Europe and his native country, the United States of America.

On Monday morning last, a worthy citizen of this place [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] named Nathan Platt, was killed instantly, by the fall of a part of a frame which he and others were engaged in raising.  The frame belonged to Stephen Weed and is designed to furnish additional accommodations for his extensive coopering establishment in the north part of the village.  The bents, several in number but of no great height, were raised and the plates laid across them, and Mr. Platt had climbed to the top of one of the posts for the purpose of aiding to secure the frame, when, in consequence of the stay laths having been thoughtlessly removed, it began to sway and several of the bents fell.  The others upon the building escaped by jumping, with little injury.  Mr. Platt on the contrary, held on to the falling bent and struck across two pieces of timber, which the post to which he was clinging, came down upon his breast.  He never stirred after striking the ground.   He was about thirty years old and leaves a wife and child to mourn his untimely end.

Deaths

In this village [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] on Tuesday morning, Major Sidney T. Robinson in the 36th year of his age.

In the death of Mr. Robinson, the community has lost one of its most valuable members, and in his family and large circle of relatives and friends and the church to which he belonged, a vacancy has been made which cannot easily be filled.  His disease was consumption, and the hopes and fears and pains of an illness protracted to many months, he bore with the calmness and resignation of the Christian and finally departed with all the glowing hopes of the Christian, without a shadow or a doubt to obscure the joyous vision of the future. For many years he had been a consistent and useful member of the Baptist Church.  He leaves a wife and one daughter.  Mr. R. was the second son of the Hon. Tracy Robinson, and for many years has been well known as an active businessman and stage proprietor, during which he has formed extensive acquaintances among whom his many excellent qualities will be long remembered.

At Berkshire, Tioga County [NY] on the 11th instant, William Henry Moore Esqr. in the 61st year of his age.  Mr. Moore was highly esteemed for his intelligence and social virtues, and his family and friends have in his death sustained an irreparable loss.

LYNCH:  Mrs. Lynch who lived near Waterville [Oneida Co. NY] was killed by the cars on Monday of this week.  The engineer of the train discovered the woman lying face down upon the track, but not in time to stop sufficiently soon to prevent the fatal accident.  It is believed that she was intoxicated at the time.  She leaves a husband and two sons and a daughter.

The Syracuse Courier [Onondaga Co. NY] announces the death of the oldest Mason in this State, Robert Gilmor of Manlius [Onondaga Co. NY].  He was made a Mason in 1814 and belonged to the order 66 years.  Wilson Van Dyke of Unadilla was made a Mason in the same year.  If Mr. Gilmor was the oldest of his craft at the time of his death, Mr. Van Dyke undoubtedly is now.

Daniel Searles and illiterate negro, the first person who has been hanged in Tioga County [NY] was executed in Owego on Wednesday of last week.  In June last he murdered Eldridge Rewey an aged farmer, who lived alone in the neighboring village of Newark Valley. The murder was for the purpose of robbery and was one of fiendish atrocity.

Accompanied by the Sheriff and a clergyman, Searles was led to the scaffold at noon, and stationed beneath the rope.  The usual religious exercises were conducted, when the prisoner was asked if he had anything to say.  Searles then made a rambling speech in which he confessed the murder.  He preferred hanging to a lingering death by sickness and boastingly said he could stand ten times the punishment in store for him without weakening.  He advised all to refrain from alcoholic beverage.  He also implicated other men in his crime and said they should be with him at the halter.  In closing, he hoped to meet all in heaven, and bade the spectators goodbye.  he was hanged a few minutes afterward.  The body was delivered to a physician, who had purchased it for dissection.  The aged father of the condemned man witnessed the execution.

Henry B. Hoyt, a well-known landlord, died in Unadilla on Tuesday of last week, after a long and very painful illness.  At one time he was proprietor of the old Chenango House in this village [Oxford, Chenango Co. NY] which was burned a few years since.

Clintonville, Clinton Co. NY:  Diphtheria has again made its unwelcome appearance among us.  Charlie Dinger a bright little fellow of seven summers, died a few days ago, and at this time, July 1st, Nettie [Bradley] youngest daughter of Oscar and Sarah Bradley, lies a corpse, while there are three others sick in the family.  One of the three is partially convalescent.

Lillie, aged three years, only daughter of Orson Dean, West Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] swallowed a quantity of medicine last week Monday, which proved to be deadly in its composition, and in less than an hour she was dead.  Unadilla Times

Rev. Zachariah Paddock, D.D. died at Binghamton [Broome Co. NY] where he had resided for a number of years on the 4th inst. in the 81st year of his age.  He was a native of Fulton, N.Y. [Oswego Co.], was licensed to preach by the Methodist church in 1818 and for 52 years he was an active, zealous and prominent worker in the cause of his Master.  In 1870, on account of ill health, he was superannuated at his own request, but he did not altogether cease to preach or to labor.  Says the Utica Herald:  "At different times he was stationed in Utica, and under his pastorate the edifice of Bleecker Street was dedicated to the uses of that denomination.  He was also stationed at Auburn, Ithaca, Rochester, New York Mills and other places throughout the State.  He was presiding elder many years of his service. the degree of D.D. was conferred on him by Union College in 1845."

In an extended notice of this good man's life the Binghamton Republican says:

"Surely, if there be any truth in Christian promise - if there be any future reward for the virtuous, helpful and holy life, then indeed the end of this good man was Peace.  In life, vigilant and earnest in doing his Master's business; in death, glorious and triumphant, preaching therein and thereby the greatest sermon of his life, Dr. Paddock leaves behind him a Christian example, remarkably pure and perfect, which all may emulate, which some may equal; but which no one can hardly hope to excel."

Doctor Paddock visited his niece, Mrs. Dr. Lathrop in this village [Cooperstown, Otsego Co. NY] in the fall of 1876 and preached in the Methodist church.  In 1822, he preached in the Court House.  One person who then listened to him is still living here in the 94th year of her age.  We refer to Mrs. Philena Butts.

News Item

Seth H. Rowley of Unadilla [Otsego Co. NY] was a revolutionary soldier.  He enlisted at the age of 16, served through the war and died at the age of 91.  Innocent, his wife died at the aged of 87. They raised a family of 12 children, who in turn have married and raised 102 grandchildren, making in all, including grandparents, 116 in the family.

NY] on the 1st inst., Mrs. Abagail Paine in the 88th year of her age; one of the earliest emigrants to this county.  The life of this "Mother in Israel," afforded in a large degree, a transcript of practical religion bright and brightening to the last.  Faith, which works by love, as she cherished it in life, with untiring fidelity, supported her in death.  Let this be told of her.  Let her posterity cherish her memory embalmed with this.  It is more than volumes of eulogy.

At the residence of Colonel M. Townsend, Cedar Swamp, Long Island [NY] on Tuesday last, Mrs. Frances P. Lupton relict of the late Lancaster Lupton.

Death loves indeed a shining mark.  Mrs. Lupton was one of the most estimable and accomplished of her sex.  To her friends - and who in the wide circle of her acquaintance, was not her friend - she was a guide and an example, eminently so, - winning by the gentleness and kindness of her manners, by her affability and her ever indulgent charity of opinion, their unqualified confidence and esteem.  To rare personal accomplishments, she added varied mental attainment.  In the walks of literature and the fine arts, as in the domestic circle, she sought, by the exercise of the higher faculties of a cultivated mind, to contribute to a never-failing source of self-gratification, the happiness of others.  She was a patron of the arts, not only in the productions of her pencil, but in the taste which she successfully cultivated herself and infused among others.  Mrs. Lupton was a communicant of the Protestant Episcopal church and she illustrated the purity of her faith in a life of philanthropy and Christian and social charity, and in the exercise of those practical virtues which adorn and exalt humanity, and fit it for the perfection of which in another state, it is susceptible.  This is indeed, in the midst of the grief of friends, a high and cherished source of consolation.  Albany Argus

In Delhi [Delaware Co. NY] on the 18th ult. Miss Phebe Elizabeth [Moon] daughter of John Moonb, in the 14th year of her age, suffering severely from distress after a short illness of only five days, which she bore with unexampled patience.  In recording the death of this young lady, we feel in no ordinary degree the loss sustained by the event.  Her death has created a void in the bosom of her family which cannot be filled by transitory things.  A Father, Mother, Brothers and Sisters are bereft of one that was near and dear to them.

In Sidney [Delaware Co. NY] on the 19th ult. Mr. Daniel Todd aged about 45 years.

In Bloomville [Delaware Co. NY] on the 28th ult. Mrs. Margaret Makee wife of David Makee in the 37th year of her age.  Her sickness was of short duration, which she bore with fortitude and died in the triumph of the Christian's faith.

At the residence of his brother, in Bloomville [Delaware Co. NY] on the 25th ult. Mr. Silas Hill in the 39th year of his age, after an illness of about two weeks.

In Bovina [Delaware Co. NY] on the 26th ult. Mr. William Seacord in the 65th year of his age.  His last illness was short but severe.

At Bovina [Delaware Co. NY] on the 4th inst., Mrs. Julia Tuttle, wife of David Tuttle in the 41st year of her age.

At Washington, D.C. on the 26th ult. aged 68 years, Michael Hogan Esq. consul-general of the United States at Chili and formerly a merchant in the city of New York.  He was distinguished throughout various reverses of fortune, by his enterprise, his intelligence and probity, as well as by his hospitable and liberal disposition and the urbanity of his manners.

On the 24th of December, at his residence in London, the Rev. George Whitfield, aged 79 years, upwards of fifty years connected with Wesley Methodism.  He was at one time a travelling companion of Mr. Wesley and afterwards undertook the superintendence of the Book Room, City Road, at Mr. Wesley's particular desire.

At St. David's, Upper Canada, on the 8th ult. Mrs. Jemima Stewart aged 109 years!  In her younger days, Mrs. S. resided on the Susquehanna River, State of New York and for the last fifty years lived where she died.  Her husband departed this life a few years ago at the age of 96.  They have children now living at the age of 80 and grandchildren at 60, and a large number of great-grandchildren.

News Item

There is now at Washington, a man by the name of Andrew Wallace, applying for an increase of pension, his present allowance by government amounted to twenty-six cents per diem.  He is 103 years of age, having been born in Inverness, Scotland, March 14, 1730, and arrived in America in 1752, and his present residence is in Chester Co. Pennsylvania.  He retains a fine intelligent countenance and the full possession of his faculties, though his body continually shakes from paralysis.

He was a soldier at the battle of Culloden, Scotland, on the side of the Stuarts.  He was, after his arrival in his country, appointed an orderly sergeant, above which post he never rose, and fought both in that war, and in several battles in the revolution.  He was engaged in the battle of the Iron Hills, under Col. Wayne, and in the battle of Brandywine, where he aided in carrying Gen. Lafayette off the field when wounded.  He was in the Mohawk War in 1785, and in the Indian war of 1791, and was in the terrible slaughter, called St. Clair's defeat, in which he was wounded in the right arm by a ball.  His arm was so injured that it has never since been straight.  He nevertheless remained in the army and was in the battle fought by Wayne with the Indians in 1794.  He afterwards served five years in the 3d U.S. Sub. Legion, under Capt. Pike, the father of the late General.  When the legion was dissolved, he fell into the 2d Regiment in Capt. Schuyler's Company and was at last marched to New Orleans in 1812 in the regiment commanded by Col. Thomas Cushing, and was finally discharged in 1813, at the age of eighty-three by Gen. Wade Hampton, on account of disability.  He is poor, has a wife and two children, the youngest about 15 years of age.
