___________________

On Wednesday last, the 5th inst., about five miles below this village [Delhi, Delaware Co. NY], Robert Scott, one of the drivers on the Southern line of stages, was thrown from the box and killed.  the particulars, as near as we have been able to ascertain them, are these:  A lad, the son of G.H. Edgerton, Esq. of this village, was driving a horse and wagon behind and near the stage, the horse started at some object near the road and sprang forward to the side of the coach, when the wheels of the two carriages became entangled, the wagon was upset and broken. The boy however, escaped unhurt.  The horses attached to the stage being frightened by the noise in their rear started at full speed, the driver being unable to control them.  A few rods from where they started the wheels struck the timbers of a small bridge or sluice way which threw him from his seat and one or both wheels passed over his head which caused instant death  One of the passengers, named William McLean of this town, jumped from the carriage while the horses were running, broke and dislocated his ankle in so shocking a manner that amputation became necessary.  He is at present doing well.  Three other passengers (one of whom was a young lady) that remained in the coach, escaped unhurt.  The horses ran about three miles when, becoming fatigued, they slackened their pace and while ascending a hill one of the passengers leaped from the stage and succeeded in stopping them.

Mr. Scott was a native of England, from the Parish of Whittingham, in the county of Northumberland, where, we understand, his parents and relations reside.  He was about 32 or 33 years of age, has lived in this village for several years past, and has uniformly sustained the character of an honest, industrious and temperate man.  He has left a wife and child to lament his untimely fate.

Mr. Solomon Rice in the 70th year of his age - a soldier of the Revolution, much esteemed by those who best knew him for his patriotism and integrity.  Mr. Rice, though young, engaged with ardor in the struggle that achieved our independence. After undergoing the hardships of campaign in the land service, he entered as a volunteer in the navy, where in an engagement with the enemy he received a shot wound in his thigh, which eventually caused him the loss of the limb, from the effects of which he never fully recovered.

News Item

Harvey Hunt of Otego [Otsego Co. NY] has been enjoying a happy family reunion.  His family consists of himself, his wife, one daughter, seven sons, six daughters-in-law, one son-in-law and ten grandchildren.  One son resides in Neenah, Wis., and had not visited his native place in seventeen years.  Another resides in Fairbury, Ill.  Three sons reside in the city of New York and the daughter and other two sons in Otego.  All were present at the dinner given by the parents on the occasion except one son, necessarily detained in the city.  Mr. Hunt gave his children a descriptive history of the ancestry.  Ninety years ago, they removed form the Green Mountains of Vermont to where now stands the beautiful village of Otego, then a hemlock swamp and dense forest with only one framed house in the vicinity.  His father lived in a log house, but subsequently built a part of what is now the Otego hotel.  Here Mr. Hunt was born.  They purchased 300 acres of land, at $1.25 an acre, and whenever he could get together $100 in silver, for that was then the only money in use here, he took his old saddle bags and mounted his horse and rode to Albany to make a payment.  Then wild animals prowled about the country, devastating and devouring stock with great boldness. the domestic life in its joys and sorrows was minutely repleted.  It was a touching scene and will be long remembered.

Died in the village of Smithville Flats [Chenango Co. NY] Feb. 4, 1880, Mrs. Ruth Phillips Whitmarsh wife of Mr. Andrew Whitmarsh in the 80th year of her age

The deceased was born in New Jersey in the year 1800 but removed with her parents to the town of Triangle [Broome Co. NY] when ten years of age.  She continued to reside in that place until her marriage with Mr. Whitmarsh, July 4, 1820, when they took up their residence in the village of Smithville Flats, where they have continued to reside ever since. Deceased was the mother of seven children, four boys and three girls, of whom two sons and two daughters still survive to mourn her loss.

Mrs. Whitmarsh at an early period in her life, saw the necessity and importance of the religion of Christ and in the year 1830, she made a public profession of her faith in Him, when she united with the Baptist church in this place of which she continued to be a consistent and worthy member until her death.

Her last illness was very brief and her death, when it came, was quite sudden.  Though somewhat ill for a day or two previous, nothing was apprehended until the morning of the day on which she died, when the pneumonia set in which soon reached a fatal termination.  But she was not unprepared, and death had no terrors for her. she had reached the ripeness of her years as also of her Christian experience and trusting to that Savior upon whom she had learned to lean in her earlier days, she fell asleep in Jesus.

Marriage

A large party attended the wedding of Miss Beagle and Mr. Rogers Wednesday evening.  The bride is an estimable young lady and has many friends at the Forks and elsewhere.  Mr. Rogers is well known in railroad circles for a conscientious and upright employee.  Not only was a large number present from the immediate vicinity but many from Binghamton attended, among them being alderman Darrow. The presents were numerous and appropriate, the most noticeable being a $50 bill given by grandfather and grandmother English. A splendid collation was served.  Binghamton Leader

Death

HOYT:  In Coventry [Chenango Co. NY] on Sunday, May 11, 1879, in her 86th year, Mrs. Hannah Hoyt widow of the late Thadeus Hoyt.  For a long time she had been in feeble health, but at last dropped away very suddenly and peacefully and entered into rest.

THOMPSON:  On the 3d inst. Edward Thompson, aged 17 years, of Fly Creek [Otsego Co. NY] was thrown from a load of hop poles against a stone wall, breaking his back.  the accident was caused by the poles sliding forward on the wagon, striking the horses and frightening them.  On Saturday morning, one week from the date of the injury he died.  He was a son of Lee(?) Thompson.

WILCOX:  Charles Wilcox aged 33 and single, brother to Frank Wilcox, harness maker, and Duane Wilcox, carriage manufacturer, of Unadilla Forks [Otsego Co. NY], left that place April 25th for Bradford, Pa., where he had formerly worked, with $70 in his possession.  On the 5th inst., a telegram to his relatives here announced his sudden death, with no particulars.  His remains arrived on the 7th, per express, accompanied by a box containing the clothing he wore at his death.  The money belt he usually wore next to his body, bore evidence of having been torn and cut into by a knife, which led to the supposition that he had been murdered for his money.  a letter form Bradford, Pa. received since his burial, leaves the affair still shrouded in mystery. The letter states "He left Bradford within a few days of his arrival, without any money, for Limestone, Pa., where he was found drowned.  He being an entire stranger without money, friends, or even acquaintances, it is supposed he wandered off in a fit of despondency and deliberately committed suicide."  Further than the above, all is conjecture.  Cooperstown Rep.

Instead of a sermon at the church last Sunday evening, the pastor, Rev.
