Died in the village of Smithville Flats [Chenango Co. NY] Feb. 4, 1880, Mrs. Ruth Phillips Whitmarsh wife of Mr. Andrew Whitmarsh in the 80th year of her age
The deceased was born in New Jersey in the year 1800 but removed with her parents to the town of Triangle [Broome Co. NY] when ten years of age. She continued to reside in that place until her marriage with Mr. Whitmarsh, July 4, 1820, when they took up their residence in the village of Smithville Flats, where they have continued to reside ever since. Deceased was the mother of seven children, four boys and three girls, of whom two sons and two daughters still survive to mourn her loss.
Mrs. Whitmarsh at an early period in her life, saw the necessity and importance of the religion of Christ and in the year 1830, she made a public profession of her faith in Him, when she united with the Baptist church in this place of which she continued to be a consistent and worthy member until her death.
Her last illness was very brief and her death, when it came, was quite sudden. Though somewhat ill for a day or two previous, nothing was apprehended until the morning of the day on which she died, when the pneumonia set in which soon reached a fatal termination. But she was not unprepared, and death had no terrors for her. she had reached the ripeness of her years as also of her Christian experience and trusting to that Savior upon whom she had learned to lean in her earlier days, she fell asleep in Jesus.
