Deaths

In Owego [Tioga Co. NY] Feb. 18th, Emma Grovenia Drake daughter of Caroline and Thomas Drake, aged 10 weeks.

Thus death, with unrelenting hand, / Severs the cords of life; / And those we love most pass from earth / Its turmoil and its strife.

______________________________

In Union, Broome County, N.Y. Feb. 26th, at the residence of her son-in-law, Charles E. Keeler, Anna Dawson [Malley], wife of Henry Maley in the 79th year of her age.

Mrs. M. was born in Southington, Conn. Aug. 10th, 1779.  The following is an extract from the discourse preached at her funeral:

"Thus it is our blessed privilege to believe our aged sister, whose mortal remains are before us, about to be consigned to their mother dust, has fallen asleep.  Although she was comparatively a stranger to me, yet I am informed that for most of her life, she has been a follower of Christ.  In her early youth at the age of twenty, in the judgment of Christian Charity, she gave her heart to the Savior who died for her.  Thus, for fifty-eight years in companionship with Jesus, she was prepared to go to her dear friend in Heaven and say to him in the words of the text, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."

"There is something indescribably beautiful in a long life thus spent in the service of the Redeemer.  For the first eighteen years of her connection with the family of the redeemed, her membership was with one of the churches in New Haven, Conn.  Since then she has been in fellowship, successively with the churches in Greene, Union and Chenango Forks in this State [NY].

"A few weeks ago, with her husband, she removed to this village [Union, Broome Co. NY], expecting to spend her remaining days among us, in the family of her daughter, and when her pilgrimage should end, be buried in our fast-filling field of graves.  These few weeks have been weeks of painful suffering.  A kind Providence directed her here to die, surrounded her with all the comforts and alleviations in suffering which loving kindred and friends could administer.

"She expressed in my interviews with her a strong, unshaken hope in Jesus Christ as her Savior. she manifested a spirit of resignation to the will of God, feeling like a loved child in the hands of a loving father.

"Her cry was to Jesus as she felt the earthly house of her tabernacle giving way under the attacks of the disease which has now terminated her life."

Union News, Union, NY, March 11, 1858

Death

At South Dover [Dutchess Co. NY], Jan. 29th, Mrs. Maria L. [Dutcher] wife of Allen H. Dutcher and daughter of Clark Preston, aged 38 years.

Consumption closed her earthly career after an illness of some three months.  The deceased made no public profession of religion, but long before her death she expressed to an intimate Christian friend her interest in Jesus Christ as the only Saviour.  She enjoyed evangelical preaching, prized the bible as the word of God, and experienced real enjoyment in prayer, she hoped the crucifer Redeemer was her Saviour. The kind husband is thus compelled to give up an affectionate wife and henceforth upon the father must devolve the whole care of an only child and the little boy, though young, can but realize most painfully the sad loss of a dear mother. After partially enduring much suffering, calmly & peacefully she fell asleep. The funeral was attended by a large congregation, Monday, Feb. 1st in the Baptist Meeting House, Dover plains; sermon delivered by the Pastor from Acts VII; 69 "Lord Jesus receive my spirit."

Union News, Union, NY, March 18, 1858

Deaths

In this village [Union, Broome Co. NY], on Saturday March 13th, Charles Mersereau aged 51 years, second son of Peter, lately deceased and Sarah Layton Mersereau.

Mr. M. was born in Union, May 21, 1807.  He has been extensively and favorably known, and his sudden departure, after a short and most distressing sickness, has cast a pall of gloom over our entire community.  He was universally esteemed and beloved.  He was an enterprising citizen, a kind neighbor, a reliable friend and a consistent and steadfast Christian.  He became a follower of the Redeemer in his eighteenth year and for thirty-three years has honored his profession by a godly life and a well-ordered conversation.  He was always in his place and ready to do promptly his duty.  In the Church, therefore, in the community and in his family, his loss will be deeply felt. The great multitude who attended his funeral on Monday, notwithstanding the almost impassable traveling and threatening rain, attest the deep affection in which he was held.  But while we mourn with hope and contemplate him as now inhabiting the "heavenly mansion which his Savior has prepared for him" let us "be also ready, for in such an hour as we think not, the Son of man commeth." "By their fruits shall ye know them."  Let then the fruits of our lives, bear evidence as conclusive as in the case of him whom we now mourn, that we also are prepared to meet our Maker and judge.

__________________________

In Vestal [Broome Co. NY] on Thursday morning, March 11th, after an illness of only two days, Mr. John L. Grange in the 87th year of his age.

Mr. LaG. was one of the first settlers in this part of the country and consequently endured many hardships and privations in the then wilderness.  He also, we believe, rendered efficient service in our independence.  He was generally respected and beloved, and his sudden death has cast a gloom over the entire community.  He leaves a very large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his loss.

_______________________

In Union Centre [Broome Co. NY], March 6th, Clarisa [Thorn] wife of Josiah Thorn, aged 67 years.

"Blessed are the dead who died in the Lord."

__________________________

In this county [Broome Co. NY] on the 11tyh instant, Mr. Richard Vosbury father of Professor D.C. Vosbury of this village [Binghamton], of pulmonary difficulty in the 78th year of his age.  The deceased was born in Rensselaer County in this State [NY].  He came, at the age of 18, into the Susquehanna valley, then a wilderness and has lived on the farm in which he died near Harpersville [Broome Co. NY] for 62 years, making improvements yearly.  He has been for 68 years a firm and consistent Christian and had mainly through his efforts, succeeded in rearing a beautiful church on his farm.  He was Land Agent of DeWitt Clinton, Ambrose Spencer and Wm. Stuart for many years, and when a boy we frequently visited at his kind and hospitable house.  He commenced life without a cent, and having reared a respectable family, acquired a competence, reached a good old age and established an honored name.  He died as he had lived in the full assurance of a blessed immortality beyond the grave Binghamton Republican.

Union News, Union, NY, March 25, 1858

Death

At the residence of Avery Mersereau in Union [Broome County, NY], Mr. Israel P. Mersereau aged 82 years.

Mr. M. was too widely and too favorably known to need any newspaper or pulpit eulogy.  All who knew him knows he lived entirely above the reproach of those who are willing to find fault with the sun because of the few dark spots upon its otherwise shining surface.  His father, John Mersereau, took an active part in the Revolutionary struggle and soon after the happy termination of that event, he left Elizabethtown, N.J. and settled in this place. Therefore, nearly all of the long and useful life of the deceased has been spent in Union.  And all that time he always, not by his words, but by his acts, showed himself to be the poor man's friend and counselor, and like his honored father, he hated oppression in any and every form.  His was a life of honest industry and he has left the priceless legacy of a spotless reputation, not only to a large number of relatives, but to the entire neighborhood and happy would it be for each relative and neighbor to strive to imitate those virtues which they had so long and so willingly accorded to him.  His honest heart spurned with utter contempt the mantle of modern hypocrisy but always expressed himself a firm believer in the Bible's doctrine of salvation. During his last illness, his mind remained clear as in manhood's prime; and when questioned as to his hopes beyond the grave, he said death had no terror for him.  That he put his entire trust in his Saviour whom he shortly expected to meet before eternities awful bar, but he feared not the sentence which would then be pronounced.  In a word, he lived an honest life and died in the triumphs of faith. And as I stood by his open grave amid the tearful throng, the beautiful lines of the poet came uncalled across my mind,

"And, I am glad that he has lived thus long / and glad that he has gone to his reward / Nor deem that kindly nature did him wrong / Softly to disengage the vital cord / When his weak hand grew palsied and his eye, / Dark with the mist of age, it was his time to die.

Cherry Valley Gazette, Cherry Valley, NY, March 4, 1834

Death

Suddenly, in Peru Clinton County [NY], on the 22d ult. the Hon. Jonas Platt late a Judge of the Supreme Court of this State.

Communicated for the Albany Daily Adv.:  The intelligence of the death of the Hon. Jonas Platt reached this city yesterday and produced the deepest distress and grief among his numerous friends.  It may be truly said that "a great and a good man hath fallen."

It is not yet a week since the death of the illustrious William Wirt was announced to us, and now we are again called to mourn the departure of another and equally distinguished patriot and Christian.

The writer of this brief and imperfect sketch knew intimately Judge Platt, in all his relations to society; as a private citizen in the bosom of his family, and as a public man.  As a husband and a father, he was most exemplary, affectionate and kind; as a friend and counsellor, the most faithful as a disinterested; as a lawyer, he was honest, learned, able and eloquent.  In the councils of the nation as Representative in Congress, and in the councils of the state as Senator, he was wise, upright, and patriotic.  As a Senator of the state he cooperated with the lamented Clinton, in overcoming the prejudices of the day against the Erie Canal and in urging forward to completion that great and splendid work which has produced such incalculable benefits to the people of this state.  But it is as a Judge of the Supreme Court of this state that all his talents and usefulness were unfolded.  He held that office for nearly ten years, an office then in the highest degree arduous and responsible.  His innate love of justice, his purity of purpose, his high powers of discrimination, and his independence of mind, won for him the love and esteem of his brethren, the respect and admiration of the bar and the approbation and confidence of the community.

But he had yet a higher title to admiration.  He was a meek and devout Christian, making open profession before men of the faith that was in him.  He died as he lived, in peace and charity with all the world, leaving not an enemy behind him but a multitude of ardent friends, bewailing, but submitting to, this severe dispensation of Divine Providence, which has taken from them a friend, whose life and example were precious to them.

Delaware Gazette, Delhi, NY, August 10, 1831

Deaths

In the village of Deposit [Delaware Co. NY] on Friday the 29th ult., Silas Crandall, Esq. in the 60th year of his age.  The deceased professed the religion of Christ and died in the full assurance of a blessed immortality.

Colonel Richard Varick, a distinguished officer of the Revolution, formerly Mayor of New York, President of the N.Y. State Cincinnati Society, &c., died at his residence, Prospect Point, Jersey City, on the 30th ultimo, in the 79th year of his age.

Revolutionary War Continental Army Officer, New York City Mayor. He served in the Revolutionary War as private secretary and Aide-de-Camp to General George Washington from 1781 to 1783. Prior to that, he was an aide to Major General Benedict Arnold at the time when General Arnold tried to turn over the military post at West Point, New York, to the British. Colonel Varick was falsely rumored to be involved in the scheme, and was for a time an ostracized member of the Army until Washington exonerated him and made him his aide. He served as Mayor of New York City, New York, from 1789 to 1801.

Death of David Williams

A correspondent of the Albany Argus, at Rensselaerville, says: "David Williams, the last of the captors of Major Andre, died on Tuesday, the 2d inst. at sundown.  His remains were interred on Thursday, with military honors, at Livingston Ville, Schoharie County [NY]."

Williams was born on the 21st August 1754. He lived therefore 76 years, 9 months and 12 days.  this man, whom history says, gold could not corrupt nor grandeur swerve from fealty to his country, now sleeps with Paulding and Van Wart, associates in the capture of Andre.

The action in which he was a participator, will associate his name among the brave and faithful of an era, in which it was his good fortune not only to live and to act, but to perform services, under the strongest adverse temptations, of incalculable value to his country.  There is no event more strikingly characteristic of our revolution, its objects and its agents, than the refusal of three obscure men, suffering all the deprivations of war and poverty, and gaining a precarious subsistence by occasional labor on the half desecrated farm, and by occasional service in the army, to accept of great wealth and affluence at the expense of the cause in which they were engaged.

Tombstone Inscription:  He with his compatriots John Paulding and Isaac VanWart on the 22nd of September 1780, arrested Major John Andre and found on his person treasonable papers in the handwriting of Gen. Benedict Arnold, who sought by treachery to surrender the military post of West Point into the hands of the enemy. In resisting the great bribes of their prisoner for his liberty, they showed their incorruptible patriotism; the American army was saved and our beloved Country became free.   Findagrave Memorial #9367655

Death

At Harpersfield [Delaware Co. NY] on the 30th July last, Elisha Shelden, Esq. in the 70th year of his age.

The subject of this notice was a native of the town of Dover [Dutchess Co. NY] in this state.  He removed to the town of Harpersfield about forty years since and has always been one of its most useful and respectable inhabitants.

Twenty years a justice of the Peace, he had frequent occasion to evince his love of justice and his regard for the rights of his fellow men.  He was also frequently called upon to discharge other duties which the confidence of his fellow citizens imposed upon him, and it is believed that his upright intentions and good motives were never questioned.

For thirty years the deceased was a useful and exemplary member of the Baptist Church, in Harpersfield, a faithful and devoted follower of the blessed Saviour.  He has gone to the rest prepared for those who die in the Lord.

His affectionate regard for his brethren and the interest of the church to which he had so many years belonged, was shown by a bequest of fifteen hundred dollars.  In short, his liberality has always been experienced, and his loss is severely felt, especially by the Pastor of the church, who, himself in feeble health, has uniformly found in the deceased an affectionate brother, an amiable counsellor and a true friend.

Such was our departed friend.  May we be like him!  In life virtuous and respected; In death, peaceful and happy.

______________________

In this village [Cooperstown, Otsego Co. NY] March 18th, '79, Major William Lewis, aged 87 years and 11 months.  Funeral at 1:30 o'clock this Thursday afternoon, from the residence of A.H. Watkins, Chestnut Street.

The oldest citizen of Cooperstown died on Tuesday morning after a brief illness, doubtless contracted by his attendance at the Buel trial in which he felt a great interest, lacking about five weeks of 88 years of age.

Major Lewis had previously been so well and active that his death was unexpected in this community, where he had lived so long and was so well known.  He was the son of William and Elizabeht Noyes Lewis; was born in Stonington, Conn. April 29, 1791, where he resided until 1807, and where he married Esther Sisson, who died in this village Feb. 18, 1875, aged 82 years.  when he left his native village, he removed to Pharsalia, Chenango County [NY], going with a neighbor who made the journey with an ox team and horse before a sled with a canvas covering, the snow being most of the way about four-feet deep and the country an almost unbroken wilderness. After remaining there about a year, he returned home, walking the entire distance and carrying his pack on his back.  Mr.  Lewis continued to reside in Stonington, following the occupation of a farmer before and after his marriage, until 1827 when he moved to Richfield Spring [Otsego Co. NY\] and commenced the business of hotel keeping, which he continued there and in Norwich until 1839, when he purchased the Eagle Hotel in Cooperstown of the late G.A. Starkweather.  He made a large addition to the building, and it became the then leading hotel in town.  Here he continued in business until the great fire in 1862, at which time he was burnt out.  He then retired permanently from business, passing most of his time in Cooperstown and in visiting his children at other points. But the Major had so long led an active life that he liked something to do, if it was only to do the family marketing.

When living at Richfield, Maj. Lewis took an active part in the military organization of this State.  He was elected a Lieutenant and received a commission from Gov. Pitcher; was promoted to the rank of Major, and commission by Gov. Troop. He became a member of North Stonington Lodge of Masons in 1816 and has been an active member up to his last sickness.  He leaves an only sister, Mrs. B.F. Kipp, three sons and two daughters.

Major Lewis had lived to a great age, but he was still active on foot, very seldom sick, cheerful, courteous in manner and a favorite with the young as well as with the old.

In this village [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] on the 289th of June by the Rev. D. Paddock, Abner T. Barclay to Miss Mary A. Strong both of Vestal [Broome Co. NY].

Death

In Binghamton [Broome Co. NY] June 21, Charles H. B. Lewis aged 9 years and 4 months, only son of John and Eliza Lewis.

The sweet Christian patience with which he endured protracted sufferings and his peaceful faith in Jesus Christ as his Saviour are known to many and are worthy of being recorded.  Very few have been called to be so heavy a yoke in their youth.  Very few have been so supported by native fortitude and heavenly grace to wear that yoke with such gentle, meek submission.  His disease, commonly known as the hip disease, was 7 years in reaching its fatal termination.  At first there appeared a slight lameness; next, he was unable to engage in the more active sports of childhood; then he needed the help of crutches; next he hopped about as he could upon his limbs crossed, leaning upon a little three wheeled carriage; at last, he was confined to his chair by the window.  How did his child's heart ache to be able to join in the plays of those of the same age, whom he saw running and jumping in the street.  It was in his little highchair by the window that the writer of this first saw him. We remember well the sweet, placid, chastened look of Charley. there were no marks of repining and discontent upon his face.  If ever they were traced there, religion stood by to smooth them away.

For two or three years before we saw him, he had seemed to be a child of God.  But just then he was entering into the heaviest shadow of his afflictions and Christ had become more manifestly his Saviour.  He had passed through a period of anxiety and stress on account of sin, from which he had come forth into a conscious and settled peace.  Like a sick lamb unable to go farther, the Good Shepherd took him up to carry him gently in the arms of compassion and love, the rest of his journey.  To such questions as these: "Charley, the dear Saviour helps you bear your pains, and he will help you, will he not!" - he ever answered yes, a smile playing over his pale cheek.  While he could be carried to the church on the Lord's Day, it gave him great delight.  For the last year confined at home, he has found comfort and happiness in hearing religious books read. When the Young Cottager, by Leigh Richmond, was read to him, he said that he felt very much like that young cottager. When we saw him he was always just so composed and cheerful.  He felt that he should not suffer more than was best, and that Jesus would give him all the help he needed.  All that parental affection could do for him was done, day and night. But even parental love could only assuage his pains, could relieve his restlessness for a little while only. there was a Heavenly parent, who ministered unseen to this child of heaven. Very great were his sufferings; very manifest was the power of that strength which is made perfect in human weakness.  When the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ composes the heart of a child so that he can smile in the face of the King of Terrors, so that that he can waste away month by month uncomplaining, can we deny that the gospel is the wisdom and the power of God?  What heavenly things hid from the wise and prudent, does God reveal to babes!

The last time we visited Charley, was the evening before he died.  He had been failing rapidly for a week.  He was too feeble to speak much.  He had said to his father "I hope in Christ. I cannot hope in anybody else," and was waiting for his release.  The diseased, emaciated little form was soon to crumble, but the free, incorruptible spirit was to soar to the home of its Redeemer, its everlasting home. The day after his death we were present to help bury him.  The house of death seemed sacred.  It was the portal of heaven.  His affectionate, bereaved parents were indeed on that side of the portal where shadows are cast.  But he was where all is light, and that light seemed to stream through the portal upon the morning, while the voice of a son in Heaven seemed to whisper, "Ye wo'd not have me return to you, happy will we be if, when God shall appoint, ye shall come hither to me."

We could not but pity Charley while he lived, but now he is in heaven, we cannot but say, "Happy Charley! far happier than those of your age, and those still older, who are free from your sufferings but who live and die without choosing your Saviour." May God rather give us your sorrows than deny us your heaven.
