Death

Suddenly, in Peru Clinton County [NY], on the 22d ult. the Hon. Jonas Platt late a Judge of the Supreme Court of this State.

Communicated for the Albany Daily Adv.:  The intelligence of the death of the Hon. Jonas Platt reached this city yesterday and produced the deepest distress and grief among his numerous friends.  It may be truly said that "a great and a good man hath fallen."

It is not yet a week since the death of the illustrious William Wirt was announced to us, and now we are again called to mourn the departure of another and equally distinguished patriot and Christian.

The writer of this brief and imperfect sketch knew intimately Judge Platt, in all his relations to society; as a private citizen in the bosom of his family, and as a public man.  As a husband and a father, he was most exemplary, affectionate and kind; as a friend and counsellor, the most faithful as a disinterested; as a lawyer, he was honest, learned, able and eloquent.  In the councils of the nation as Representative in Congress, and in the councils of the state as Senator, he was wise, upright, and patriotic.  As a Senator of the state he cooperated with the lamented Clinton, in overcoming the prejudices of the day against the Erie Canal and in urging forward to completion that great and splendid work which has produced such incalculable benefits to the people of this state.  But it is as a Judge of the Supreme Court of this state that all his talents and usefulness were unfolded.  He held that office for nearly ten years, an office then in the highest degree arduous and responsible.  His innate love of justice, his purity of purpose, his high powers of discrimination, and his independence of mind, won for him the love and esteem of his brethren, the respect and admiration of the bar and the approbation and confidence of the community.

But he had yet a higher title to admiration.  He was a meek and devout Christian, making open profession before men of the faith that was in him.  He died as he lived, in peace and charity with all the world, leaving not an enemy behind him but a multitude of ardent friends, bewailing, but submitting to, this severe dispensation of Divine Providence, which has taken from them a friend, whose life and example were precious to them.
