PALMER:  I forgot to mention last week the death of Capt. John Palmer, brother of L.C. Palmer, of your village [Oneida, Madison Co. NY].  It occurred July 27th.  It is supposed that he was injured internally last winter, while getting out timber on his farm about one mile north of New London.  After many months of intense suffering, he expired, leaving a wife and children, besides a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn his untimely loss.  His age was about 56 years. The deceased was one of the pioneers in packet boating on the old Erie, and for years was a great favorite with the traveling public riding on the "packet" in those days.  Some 28 to 30 years ago it was the most pleasant as well as fashionable mode fo travel.

LUMBARD:  Verona, Oneida Co. NY:  Mr. Lumbard living near Tilden Hill lost two children last week from dysentery, aged respectively; a son 3 years and a little girl 11 months.  Both funerals were held at the M.E. Church of this village, the first was buried last Thursday and the youngest last Sabbath. Sermon by Rev. L.H. Stanley, pastor in charge, to a large and sympathizing audience.

LANSING:  Georgetown, Madison Co. NY:  Mrs. Lansing a much respected lady, aged about eighty years, was buried on the 25th ult.

News Item

W.H. Baker is the name of the prisoner who jumped off the cars and was killed Tuesday morning, a few miles west of Syracuse [Onondaga Co. NY] He was in charge of the deputy sheriff of Saratoga County [NY], who had arrested Baker in Michigan, and was on his way to that county.

We are happy to say that the above named W.H. Baker is not our friend Mr. W.H. Baker, the Editor and proprietor of the Democratic Union.
