Tin and Variety Wedding:  On February 6th there occurred at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Dr. William Carruth, at Cincinnatus, N.Y. [Cortlant Co.], a very enjoyable affair, it being the tenth anniversary of their wedding.  First came the well spread board, with all the delicacies of the season in great abundance, which, we presume, were not gotten up with reference to dyspeptics that might be present, of which about fifty took part.  they were the recipients of many useful and valuable presents.  Next in order was music, instrumental and vocal, served in copious quantities and as the small hours were drawing near, the large company quietly dispersed. We believe all present earnestly unite in pronouncing it one of the pleasantest gatherings it has been their fortune to enjoy.

In view of the death of Judge Balcom, a committee was appointed to prepare and report minutes and resolutions to this meeting. The report as made and accepted is as follows:

The members of the Bar of Chenango County [NY] desire to express and place upon record their appreciation of the character of the late Hon. Ransom Balcom. and their sorrow for his loss.

Judge Balcom was born and reared in our County.  Here he was educated and here too was laid the foundation and indeed was reared the super-structure upon which his reputation as a lawyer vested and here was gained all that legal knowledge which pointed him out as a proper man to place upon the bench.

His was the example of a man who, unaided by an adventitious circumstances, rose to eminence as a jurist and during his long judicial career retained the confidence and respect of the members of the Bar and of the community.  He was laborious, patient and careful as a lawyer and judge.  He was courteous, too, listening carefully to arguments, patiently attending to what might be said, giving his decisions with clearness and integrity.  To his friends we tender our warmest sympathy in their great bereavement.

Resolved:  That the foregoing minutes be entered in full upon the records of this association.

News Item

The Oneonta Press [Otsego Co. NY] of last week says:  "It is reported that Ezra Alger, a brother of the elder David Alger of Oneonta, was shot and killed, Tuesday, by a deputy sheriff, who was endeavoring to arrest him for stealing two satchels from a peddler. The affair took place in "Mormon Hollow" near Masonville, Delaware County [NY].  The report is that Alger resisted the efforts to arrest him and endeavored to kill the officer with a knife and that in shooting, he (the officer) acted in self-defense.
