But while they mourn, it is not without hope of realizing the desire earnestly expressed by Deily to "come and see him before long" in the mansions prepared by Jesus for them that love Him.

On Sunday afternoon at about five o'clock, our community was startled to hear that Mr. Lonson Shaw had accidently killed himself in the following very singular manner.  He went into the cellar way to get a piece of ham which was hanging up there, took a knife from his pocket and cut off a slice or two, turned to step up into the room with the knife in his right hand. As he stepped up, his foot slipped and he fell partly on his right side through the door, striking his right arm against the door casing, thereby giving the hand holding the knife the right position to fall upon and for it to strike his heart.  which caused death almost instantly. The scream of a child near him and his falling brought his wife and mother to his side and supposing he was attacked with a fit, after calling his brother, they proceeded to administer what they thought best to bring him to consciousness, not succeeding, an examination was made and a wound over the heart was found.

He resided on the factory ground and was in the employ of W.F. Leonard, in the Factory, and was a faithful workman and Christian man, and was prepared to meet his Creator. We saw him but a few hours before his death assisting his brother-in-law and a nephew, who were that day baptized in the Butternut Creek.  His labors are ended, and his spirit has gone to the God who gave it.  He leaves a wife and two children, an aged father and mother, and other relatives to mourn his untimely death. This sad occurrence has cast a shadow of sorrow over the entire community, and more especially over the church of which he was a beloved member, having but a short time since united with the Baptist church in this village. The New Year which commenced so pleasant in that household in the morning, brought sadness and sorrow before evening.  He was 36 years of age. Funeral will take place from the Baptist church Wednesday Jan. 4th, at 1 o'clock P.M.  He will be buried under the direction of the Masonic order, of which he was an honorable member.

On Tuesday, Dec. 27th, a man named Moses Wright, living in the town of Pittsfield [Otsego Co. NY] some three miles from this village, was chopping wood for Joseph Mumbulo, with a son of the latter.  About half past eleven, young Mumbulo went to the house to do his chores, leaving Wright in the woods.  On returning at about one o'clock, found Wright lying upon the ground dead. From appearances he had cut a tree and in falling it had gone against a smaller one, which was carried partly down by the weight of the falling tree, when it sprung back, striking him on the side of the head, killing him instantly, as appearances indicate. Wright was 26 years of age.  He leaves a wife and one child, who have the sympathy of the entire community.  His funeral was held at the universalist church in this village on Thursday, Rev. O. Perkins, of Cooperstown officiating.  Mrs. Wright wishes us to say that she returns her sincere thanks to her neighbors and the community for their kindness to her in the hour of affliction.

Morris Chronicle, Morris, NY, January 11, 1871:  When we went to press last week it was thought Mr. Shaw came to his death as we then stated, but subsequent examination of the place show without doubt that he received the wound while cutting off the meat, the knife striking a bone and slipping off. There were blood stains on the wall opposite to where he stood. The meat hung about breast high, and he held it with the left hand cutting towards him with the right. The knife which was very sharp shows that it came in contact with the bone, the bone also shows the mark of the knife.  He had cut off several pieces of the meat, giving some to his little girl who stood by his side, and ate of it himself.  After receiving the wound he turned around and fell into the room (the door being open all the while) where his mother sat reading aloud, who asked him what was the matter. He answered that he did not know and lived some ten minutes, but was unable to speak.  Physicians say that a very slight wound in the place where his was would paralyze the heart and cause death. At the time Mr. Shaw had no coat or vest on.

The funeral of Mr. Shaw last Wednesday was very largely attended. The church was packed full, and some one hundred and fifty Masons were in attendance.  The lodges of Laurens, Butternuts, Burlington, New Lisbon and Otego were well represented.
