Marriage

On Wednesday evening of this week, at the home of the bride in this village [Bainbridge, Chenango Co. NY], Mr. John L. Clark was united in marriage to Miss Emma M. Marshall, only daughter of Hiram Marshall.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. D.N. Grummon.  The bride was very nicely dressed and we noticed at the reception one or two very elegant presents.  This couple, it seems, have wooed since babyhood and Cupid, who no doubt had an idea of his own, has at last consummated a union, which we trust will never be disturbed in its present harmonies - a union which the friends of both will unite in expressions of congratulation and wishes for their beatific prosperity through all their walk in life.  Among the invited guests were C.M. Priest, L.B. Clark, I.M. Curtis, S.S. Ehrich, Willard Hastings and yours truly.

Deaths

Sidney Center, Delaware Co. NY: Mrs. C. Benedict of Sidney, aged 74 years; Mr. McIntyre aged 72 years, and his wife aged 63, died January 13th.  The funeral services were held in this village on the 15th and 16th.  Mr. and Mrs. McIntyre were buried in one grave in Sidney Center Cemetery.

Died in Guilford [Chenango Co. NY] Jan. 15, Amanda [Bradbury] wife of Andrew Bradbury, aged 75 years. In the death of this lady, we are again reminded how rapidly the old and respected citizens of the town are passing away.  Mrs. Bradbury has been a resident of Guilford for over 40 years, for nearly four years has been an invalid and at times her sufferings have been intense.  Her active life was always filled with works and deeds of charity and the poor especially will remember her as their friend.  She leaves a husband and several children, all living in town, except Dr. Matthew Bradbury, of Mexico [Oswego Co. NY], who was here to attend her funeral.

News Item

We were shown by J.M. Lull, Esq. on Friday last an old iron kettle, which had come into his possession the day before, which was once the property of his father.  This kettle has quite a history.  In 1776 the father of Mr. Lull lived some three miles north of this village [Morris, Otsego Co. NY].  The Indians becoming troublesome, he was obliged to leave this part of the country for some more thickly inhabited place.  Just before starting he took the above kettle together with several others and buried them in a corn field.  After being absent some five years, he returned; made search for the kettles, but bushes had grown over the field and although he made an instrument and perforated the field over, he could not find his kettles, and he supposed the Indians had dug them up and appropriated them to their own use.  But about fifty years afterwards the kettles were plowed up by Ezra Lull.  The one we saw was brought to the village to be sold for old iron, Mr. Lull getting an eye on the old kettle, thought best to save it for a relic and a reminder of those days that tried men's souls.
