Deaths
MARTIN: At the residence of her son-in-law, G.H. Manning, in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], July 10th, Mrs. Sarah Martin, aged 65 years.
TREADWAY: In Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], July 6th, Clayton P. [Treadway], child of Charles B. and Mary Treadway, aged 1 year and 2 months.
RACE: In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], June 20th, Annes [Race], wife of Dea Wheaton Race, and daughter of Zopher Butts, aged 67 years and 9 months. Sister Race was born in Oxford and has been a member of the Oxford and Greene Baptist Churches about 18 years. She loved the cause of Christ. God took down her tabernacle gradually, yet she was not alarmed at the summons of death. Though she viewed herself unworthy to enter heaven, yet her hope was in Christ. Though dead, she lives in the hearts of her husband, children, relatives and numerous friends, that have shared in her counsel and sympathy.
Mourn not for the dead! She has gained that bright shore, / Where the sorrows of earth can afflict her no more; / She tunes her glad lyre, and triumphantly sings, / Hosanna and praises to Bethlehem's King.
But mourn for the mourner, who sighing remains, / Subjected to sorrow, to sin, and to pains / Whose spirit oft yearns for that cold, dreamless bed; / Oh! I mourn for the mourner, but not for the dead.
Child Drowned: A little girl about three years of age, daughter of Mr. Huffcutt, who lives near the Red Mills in the town of Afton [Chenango Co., NY], was drowned on Monday the 5th inst. during the absence of the parents from home, the child strayed to the ferryboat, where her bonnet, and some ribbons were found, and, it is supposed, fell into the river. The body drifted into the waterwheel of the spoke factory, a few rods below, and was recovered late in the afternoon. Home & Abroad.

Marriages
MAHAN - HIGLAY: In Greene [Chenango Co., NY], July 12th, by Rev. John Cairns, Mr. Eugene Mahan of Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], to Miss Nancy C. Higley, of Greene.
DEMING - WALKER: In Ripon, Wis., June 29th, by Rev. P. Work, Mr. F.G. Deming to Miss Alice E. Walker, daughter of John Walker, formerly of Greene [Chenango Co., NY].
Golden Wedding: Mr. and Mrs. P. Davison celebrated their Golden Wedding at their home on State Street, Thursday evening last, July 8th, surrounded by their eight children and nine grandchildren; and three persons were present who witnessed the marriage, which was at the home of the bride, in Burlington, Otsego Co. [NY], fifty years ago.
Mr. Davison's birthplace was in Stillwater, Saratoga Co. [NY], where he has since conducted the watch, clock, and jewelry business. Many are the silver spoons now held as precious family relics, bearing the stamp of "Davison," as manufacturer, for they were wrought by his "cunning handicraft."
How different the times now to what they were then! There was not a single steel spring vehicle in the place, and he borrowed a one-horse lumber wagon of Mr. marsh to go over for his bride. In those days courting was beset with difficulties unknown now, but we suppose the Inexpressible Something, vulgarized by even the cooing word of Love, was about the same fifty years ago, as now.
Few are permitted to look back through the vista of fifty years, on the event of a Golden Wedding. On such an occasion there must be much of joy, much of regret, much of heart thanksgiving. It must be a joy to have seen prattling children rise to manhood and womanhood; and through them rising yet another generation. Hallowed are home memories.
Mr. Davison is 74 years of age; Mrs. D. 74, and there is a prospect of many years of life here below for them yet. Home News
