Distressing Affair, A Little Girl Accidentally shot by her cousin

A sad and fatal result of the careless handling of firearms took place in the town of McDonough [Chenango Co., NY] on Wednesday, of last week.  A boy by the name of Mert Holdridge, about sixteen years old, son of Chauncy Holdridge, of McDonough village, was visiting at the residence of his uncle, Asa Wilcox, who resides near Ludlow Pond, and during the absence of Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox, requested the daughter of Mr. Wilcox, a little girl about eleven years old [Garfelia A. Wilcox], to get her father's pistol for him, which she refused to do, stating that her father had warned her not to touch it.  The boy, however, per sited in his request for the pistol, and she as persistently refused to get it.  Young Holdridge somehow found out where the pistol was kept, and soon possessed himself of it, and then pointed it at the girl, saying that he was going to shoot her for not getting it for him. The girl was frightened and ran, and the boy pursued her with the pistol pointed at her, when from some cause the pistol was discharged, the content entering the girl's neck, producing death in a short time. The occurrence is a horrible one and must have been a sad blow to the parents, who, upon their return, found their little daughter weltering in her blood.  We understand that the shooting is thought to have been purely accidental, but the reckless carelessness of the transaction deserves severe rebuke, if not a greater punishment.

CURTIS:  In McDonough [Chenango Co., NY], on Sunday morning, August 22d, Emily [Curtis], aged 9 years; on Monday morning August 23d, Henry C. [Curtis], aged 16 years, children of Mrs. C. Curtis.

We laid them both in one grave, side by side, the idol and the hope of a widowed mother.  Emily, so active and intelligent, so lovely and affectionate, a bud of rare promise, the Savior transplanted to bloom in "Eden Land." Henry of whom none ever spoke except to praise, whose devotion to and affection for his mother were seldom equaled, but never excelled, and a faithful member of the church, is now, we trust, a bright jewel in the Savior's crown.  But oh! to the mother, what words more befitting:  "I love thee, I love thee, pass under the rod."

SMITH:  In this village, September 6th, Lilly May [Smith], only daughter of John L. and Mary V. Smith, aged 15 months.

Lilly May now is lying / In a silent, narrow bed; / Autumn winds are greatly sighing, / Round her beauteous little head.

But our little one was weary, / Hardly ever would she weep, / So, while lying in her cradle, / Lilly darling fell asleep.

O' our hearts were almost breaking, / When we saw her close her eyes, / Yet bethought we of a waking, / When our little one shall rise.

When our love shall early waken / 'Mong the first to sleep no more / Then shall we again behold her, / Where there's parting never more.
