Drowning of Rev. Daniel Clark

The many friends of Rev. Daniel Clark, formerly pastor of the Congregational Church of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] (says the Telegraph of last week) will be sorry to learn that he was drowned in Illinois on the 24th ult; the particulars of which will be found in the following communication:

Onarga Ill., Sept. 30, 1869

Editors of Telegraph:  On Friday morning, Sept. 24th, Rev. Daniel Clark, pastor of the Congregational Chruch of Plainfield, Will Co., lll., was drowned while attempting to ford a bayou of the Desplaines river on horseback.  From the appearance of the body when found, it is supposed his horse suddenly plunged into one of the many deep holes in the bayou, throwing his rider, and in struggling to regain firm footing, probably struck the deceased on the head with his forefoot.  This supposition appears reasonable, as bruises were found upon his head, the blows causing which were sufficient to produce insensibility. When the body was recovered, some four hours after the sad occurrence, he was found lying upon his face, in about six feet of water, his riding whip in his hand. At the time of his death not a member of the family were at home, his wife being off on a visit to one of her sons.  The telegraph informed them of the event, but they reached home only in time to visit the corpse of the husband and father.

Mr. Clark will be remembered by most of your readers, as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Norwich, about sixteen years ago, over which charge he was settled four years.  From Norwich he removed to Fredonia, N.Y.; from Fredonia to Lyons, Ia.; from Lyons to Galena, Ill.; from Galena to Galesburg, and from Galesburg to Plainfield, where he met his sad death.

He will be remembered as a man of eminent piety, of fine intellectual abilities and of great social worth.  In his death the cause of Christ has lost a sincere, devoted and successful advocate; the State a law-abiding citizen; the friends of humanity an earnest champion; his family one of the most affectionate of husbands and fathers; and the community in which he lived and labored one of its brightest ornaments.  A chaplet of loving memories will crown his name and forehead wherever known - wreaths of undying fragrance, in the form of souls saved through his ministrations now and forever, will greet his entrance into Heaven and be worn by him through all eternity.

His funeral services were held on last Sabbath, and hundreds of friends followed his remains to the grave, where they "softly lie and sweetly sleep" until that day when, purified, his mortal body shall put on immortality, become incorruptible, and is again the tenement house of a soul so noble as to be measureless, so good as to be akin to Deity.
