Death of Rev'd Arthur Burtis, D.D.

We regret the sad duty which calls us to notice the death of Rev'd Arthur Burtis, which occurred at Oxford, Ohio, on the 23d ult. of inflammation of the bowels, after a brief illness.  Doctor Burtis was formerly settled over the Presbyterian Church in this village [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], and removed from here rather more than twenty years since. While here Doctor Burtis was held in high esteem as a profound scholar, and a Christian gentleman, with which he united varied learned and social qualities of a high order. The following sketch of the deceased from the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser, is a worthy tribute to the memory of one, by whose death religion and learning have lost an able champion, and which leaves a void which may not be easily filled.

Dr. Burtis was born in the city of New York, on the 25th day of October 1807.  His father, after whom he was named, was quite a prominent citizen of New York, having been one of its ten Governors during the Revolution.  By his efforts the city was placed in a state of defense against the British.  The son, the subject of this brief sketch, graduated at Union College in 1827.  Among his classmates were Joseph law, brother of George Law, Judge Campell, of Otsego Co., John J. Sisco, Preston King and the late Hon. George P. Barker of this city [Buffalo, NY].  In his room at college the well-known secret society, "Kappa Alpha" was originated, the above named classmates of his, Chancellor Walworth, and a few others, being engaged with him in its inception.  After Mr. Burtis graduated, the meetings were held in the room of Hon. Elijah Ford, of this city.  He studied law under Chancellor Kent, at Columbia College, and received his theological education at the Auburn Seminary.  He began to preach in 1834, being connected with the Presbyterian denomination.  He was first settled at Little Falls, next Binghamton, then Fort Plan, Oxford and Vernon, all in this State [NY].  From Vernon he came to this city, in 1847, and was pastor of the Frist Presbyterian Church here for two years.  He afterwards took charge successively of the South and Tabernacle Presbyterian Churches of Buffalo, and, when the latter was broken up, became Secretary of the American and Foreign Christian Union.  In this occupation, being also engaged in fitting young men for college, he continued until last September, when he accepted the Chair of professor of Greek in the university at Oxford, Ohio.  His family did not leave the city with him but were soon to join him.

The deceased was held in high estimation as a Christian, a scholar, and a citizen and his death will be deeply lamented by the large number of our citizens who knew and respected him.
