Withered Flowers

It is sad to witness the work of the chill frost in a beautiful garden, but infinitely more sorrowful when bright and lovely buds of promise - the loved and loving children - are smitten by the destroyer Death.

The Sabbath School at East Guilford [Chenango Co. NY] was like a beautiful garden.  Around its blooming plants twined strongest and tenderest cords of love, but diphtheria came, and one by one the flowers drooped and died.

The home garland of Philip Matthewson was composed of five lovely children.  Who can tell with what love and pride they were regarded, what fond hopes were bound up in that bright circlet?  Only one of that fair garland remains. The others are transplanted to the heavenly gardens.  The family of Austin Miller comprised six beloved children.  They had seen their companions falling around them till they had come to regard the diphtheria as the death angel.  Charley [Miller], aged eleven, was the first one stricken.  He was a child of remarkable intelligence, seeming to understand the words of divine truth almost by intuition.  When he felt the grasp of the disease upon his throat, he called for water.  After tasting it, he sent a glass to his sick mother, and to everyone who entered the room he offered the pure water.  Was it in memory of Him who once said "Drink ye all of it?"  Be that as it may, Charley soon went to drink of the "water of life," in the beautiful city of God. Thither his little sister, aged seven, soon followed him, saying, "I am going to Charley, but there are so many people in heaven I'm afraid I can't find him."  So many - yes, and soon the pet of the household, a dear little boy of three years, joined the company.  Three on earth, and three in Heaven.  One day the circle shall be joined again, but now there are lonely homes, and the Sabbath School is like a deserted garden, its fairest flowers withered and dead.  But, unlike the withered flowers of earth, these sweet blossoms only felt the death chill as a signal to take on forms of immortal glory and beauty which they now wear in the garden of the Lord, where Christ the Savior is the gardener, and where the chill breath of the Destroyer shall be felt nevermore.  E.J.R.
