In North Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], suddenly, May 19th, Samuel Lyon, Esq., aged 78 years.

Another aged and respected citizen of our county died on Sunday morning last, Samuel Lyon, Esq., of North Norwich.  Mr. Lyon was an old resident of this town and North Norwich, and held various positions of trust, among them, for several terms, the office of Justice of the Peace.  Losing his wife some years since, the latter part of his life has been passed among his children.  His death was sudden.  One day last week he walked from his daughter's in Sherburne (Mrs. Waters) to the residence of his son-in-law, Cuyler Per Lee, Esq., of North Norwich.  On Saturday evening he retired in his ordinary  health and spirts, and came down stairs Sabbath morning apparently as well as usual.  On entering the sitting room with his accustomed cheer, and while making some remarks upon the beauties of the morning, by a stroke of apoplexy, this being the third attack, he fell to the floor, and in a moment was dead.  Thus, another of the feeble few who lived in generations gone by, and who connect the present with the distant past, has gone to his reward.  Within the short space of about two weeks, in North Norwich alone we have chronicled the death of no less than four of our oldest citizens:  John Gile, aged 75; Richard Gorton, aged 88; Elijah Buell, aged 79; Samuel Lyon, aged 77.  Within that time Phineas Newton, of Plymouth, aged 81, and Caleb Cooper, of Guilford, aged 85, have also died, making six pioneers of our county that have recently passed away, within a circumference of six or eight miles of the county seat, representing, in years, an aggregate of nearly five centuries.  Well may we exclaim "Our fathers, where are they, and the Prophets, do they live forever?"  The few remaining links in the chain which holds us to the unwritten records of the past and to events so remote as to be forgotten, are being severed.  Who will gather from the broken and scattered remnant the traditions of Chenango and give us its well digested annals in a manner that will do honor to the memory of our Pioneer Fathers?

A Child Drowned:  A most shocking and fatal accident occurred on Sunday morning last, near the stone quarry about 4 miles below this village [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], resulting in the drowning of a little daughter of William Haight.  The mother, with this child, her brother, about twelve years of age, and another quite young, had just started for the West bank of the river in a boat, when it struck a log which had lodged upon the upper point of an island about four rods below the river bridge.  The party were all precipitated into the water, the boy succeeded in reaching land, and the mother, although in water above her waist held fast to the youngest child, and saved herself by wading to the shore.  She grasped for the last one in hopes of securing her by the clothing, and caught her shawl, but the little one was soon carried by the current beyond all hope of rescue. A little dog that was with them in the boat is also missing, probably held fast by the child when she was thrown into the water. The deceased was a bright child of eight summers, a great pet of her parents, who were almost paralyzed with grief at her loss. The current was quite rapid where the accident occurred, and a short distance below falls over a dam, below which there is deep water. Although all possible efforts have been made for the recovery of the body, they have as yet proved unavailing.  Oxford Times

Drowned in Preston [Chenango Co., NY], May 20th, Mr. Wm. R. Sayles, aged 23 years.

On Tuesday morning of ast week, the 21st inst., Roger W. Sayles, of Preston, was found dead in the pond or creek a little below Child's sawmill, near Preston Corners. Coroner T.J. Bailey, being notified of the fact, visited the locality and held an inquest, on Wednesday morning.  It appears that near noon of Monday, the deceased went out fishing.  Not returning at a late hour in the evening, connected with the fact that he was subject to epileptic fits, his friends became concerned about him, and search was immediately made.  His body was found, as before stated Tuesday morning.  The jury came to the conclusion that the said R.W. Sayles came to his death by accidental drowning, caused by fits and falling from the dam into the water.  Mr. Sayles was respectably connected, a young man temperate in his habits, and of good character.  He had two brothers who served faithfully in the 114th Regiment, Corporal M. Sayles of this village and J.C. Sayles, now of Susquehanna Co., Pa., who came near losing his life by a severe wound at the battle of Opequan. The deceased leaves a young wife, yet scarcely sixteen years of age, to mourn his loss.  His age was 23 years.
