Towards the close of Tuesday afternoon of last week, a man by the name of Carpenter, who resided in New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], was thrown from his gig while riding in the east part of this town, and so badly hurt that he died at about two o'clock on Wednesday morning. No human eye, except his own, witnessed the accident; but from the traces afterwards discovered, it was ascertained that while descending a hill he was thrown from his seat in such a manner that one or both of his legs became entangled in the reins or fastened to some part of the Sulkey underneath (probably the latter) and in this situation he was dragged some thirty or forty rods over a rough and stony road, and bruised most shockingly. He was soon discovered, wholly insensible, and taken to the house of Mr. George Cook, from whose family and from the neighboring ones he received all the attention which kindness and benevolence could administer. Physicians were immediately sent for, as well as some of his connexions. His wife and an only child arrived before he died, tho of their presence he was entirely unconscious. We learn that he had not his reason at any time after the occurrence of the accident. [Oct. 2, 1833]
In Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], on the 13th inst. Dr. Israel Farrell, an old and highly respectable citizen of that town. [Oct. 23, 1833]
