Obituaries (October 13)

The long illness and suffering of Willard Graves ended Thursday evening last by his death.  He had been confined to his house on Evans street for several months from a complication of diseases, being affections of the heart, lungs and liver.  Mr. Graves was 57 years old and had been a resident of the village for the past thirty years.  He moved from Mt. Upton [Guilford, Chenango Co., NY], his native place, to Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] and engaged in cabinet making which business he followed until sickness overtook him.  Mr. Graves was an expert at his trade and was called to different sections of the country to turn out excellent work.  Mr. Graves was always genial and pleasant, kind and free hearted and was liked by everyone.  Not only will he be missed in the field of his trade but in the community where his genial spirit was appreciated.  The funeral was held Sunday at his home and was largely attended.  Rev. Wilson E. Tanner of the Episcopal church officiated.  Burial in St. Peter's cemetery [Bainbridge, NY].  He leaves a wife, one daughter, Mrs. Herman C. Newell, and one son, Charles Graves, of Providence, R.I.  [Bainbridge Republican, Dec. 17, 1903]
 
Peter Colson, who has been ailing from consumption for the past two years, died Friday morning, December 11, 1903, at his rooms in Clark block, aged eighty-four years.  Peter came with his wife from Sweden to the United States fourteen years ago and settled at Harpursville [Broome Co., NY] where he had relatives.  He has lived in Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] twelve years.  Peter was an industrious man so long as his health permitted.  He was quiet, honest and much respected.  The funeral was held at his rooms Sunday at 1:30 p.m., Rev. Arthur Spaulding conducting the services.  Burial was in Green Lawn cemetery [Bainbridge, NY].  The bearers were C.F. Bentley, Christopher Toby, George L. Lyon and George Ireland from Bennettsville.  Mr. Colson is survived by his wife, there are no children.  Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Hawkinson of Bainbridge were his relatives.  A niece, Mrs. Finaout of Little Falls, with two daughters was present at the funeral.  [Bainbridge Republican, Dec. 17, 1903]
 
After a long period of illness caused by paralytic shock, Edward D. Evans passed away Wednesday afternoon, December 16, 1903, at his home on Evans street aged eighty-one years.  Mr. Evans was a son of Jehial and Anna Evans of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], who were among the pioneer settlers of this region.  The home of the deceased had been in this town for the most part of his life.  He was a soldier of the Civil War joining the army in March 1864.  His funeral will be held at the home Friday at 2 p.m., Rev. J.S. Crompton officiating.  The G.A.R. of Beecher Post will send a delegation and the interment will be made in Green Lawn cemetery [Bainbridge, NY].  Mr. Evans is survived by his wife and four children; George W., Jay, and Philip S. Evans and Mrs. Annette Godfrey.  There is one sister, Miss Malvina Evans, and a brother, Dormer Evans.  [Bainbridge Republican, Dec. 17, 1903]
 
The death of William E. Sherwood occurred Sunday, December 13th, at his home in New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], aged 48 years.  Mr. Sherwood was a photographer and followed that calling in Bainbridge some twenty-five years ago with rooms in the Clark block.  He was associated with his father who was a portrait painter.  His brother, B.I. Sherwood, editor of the Edmeston Local, was at that time editor of the Bainbridge Republican.  Mr. Sherwood is survived by his wife and, besides the above named brother, two others, H.A. Sherwood of Sherburne and George A. Sherwood of Norwich, and by one sister, Mrs. H.C. Brower of Burlington Flats.  [Bainbridge Republican, Dec. 17, 1903]
 
At his home above the village of Bainbridge [Chenango Co.,  NY] upon the farm known as the Charles Bixby place, Peter H. Leonard died Tuesday, December 15, 1903, from apoplexy, aged 79 years.  He is survived by a wife and children.  The funeral will be held at the house Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, the services being conducted by D.M. Vail of Waverly, Pa.  The remains will be taken Sunday morning to Otego [Otsego Co., NY] for interment.  [Bainbridge Republican, Dec. 17, 1903]
 
Clark K. Holmes died Friday, Dec. 11, 1903 from heart trouble at the home of Willis Wheeler, town of Oxford [Chenango Co., NY].  His age was seventy years.  Mr. Holmes was a printer by trade and had been employed in the Oxford Times office for forty years.  His funeral was held from the Wheeler home Monday afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. J.S. Crompton officiating.  Burial was in the West Bainbridge cemetery [Chenango Co., NY].  The deceased, is survived by a wife and two daughters.  [Bainbridge Republican, Dec. 17,1903]
 
Mrs. Mary Fisher, wife of Emmet Fisher, died at her Guilford home [Chenango Co., NY], Tuesday, December 8, 1903.  She left three children.  The funeral was held Friday at the house at 1 o'clock.  Burial was in Guilford Centre Cemetery.  [Bainbridge Republican, Dec. 17, 1903]
 
North Guilford [Chenango Co., NY]:  The funeral of Mrs. Patty Higgins, widow of the late Peter Higgins, was held at her late home, Tuesday, at eleven o'clock, the Rev. W. Treible of Norwich, officiating.  Interment in Mt. Hope cemetery [Norwich, NY].  Mrs. Higgins has been a resident of this neighborhood for about twenty-five years and was loved and respected by all who knew her.  She was a sister of Mrs. Helen Tracey of Oxford, and is also survived by her son, Perry Dixon of this place.  [Bainbridge Republican, Jan. 15, 1903]
 
Sidney [Delaware Co., NY]:  The funeral services of Malinda Cumber, who died Tuesday, March 10, were held Thursday at the home.  The attendance was large and there was an exceedingly fine display of flowers.  Rev. H.B. Benedict of Owego, conducted the service.  Mrs. Cumber was eighty years of age.  She is survived by her husband and two sons, Samuel F. and Buel J. Cumber of Windsor, and two daughters, Mrs. A.S. Miller and Miss Etta Cumber.  Mr. and Mrs. Cumber had been married over sixty years, and nearly their whole life time was spent in Sidney.  [Bainbridge Republican, Mar. 19, 1903]
