On a warm day Jan. 11, 1843, Jerome B. Sands and Jane Shaw were married in the town of Delhi [Delaware Co., NY].  Jan. 11, 1893, was a day of a very different character, but no greater were the changes of which those two days may represent extremes, than are the changes of life represented by that wedding day in 1843, when loving parents and kind brothers and sisters gathered to bless and wish happiness to the young couple about to begin their married life, and the day in 1893, when Mr. and Mrs. Sands sat at the ends of a long table and looked each other in the face, through almost an avenue of children and grandchildren.  Few are permitted to recall the experiences of fifty years of married life, its joys and sorrows, its cares and anxieties, and especially to have living reminders of these in two daughters and five sons.  Mr. and Mrs. Sands spent the early part of their married life in Meredith, Delaware County, where six children were born to them,  In 1858, they came to their present home in Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], where they have since lived, and where two children were born  But one of the eight children has been called away by death.  The commemoration of the fiftieth wedding anniversary was arranged as a surprise to Mr. and Mrs. Sands, little being suspected by them till the children appeared on the morning of Jan 11.  The occasion was a very pleasant one.  Only children and grandchildren were present.  Tokens of love were presented to the happy pair, and many messages of affection were received from friends and relatives away.  May many more anniversary days be given them, and may the good seed sown in early life ripen into the golden fruit of happiness.  Those present were Emma Seacord and son, of Unadilla; Jennie Sands, Fredrick J. Sands, wife and child, James C. Sands, wife and child, of Vallonia Springs; William G. Sands, wife and two children, Orin A Sands, and wife, of Windsor.  Charles T. Sands and family of Oswego could not be present.
