Mrs. Neff Has a Narrow Escape 1899

Mrs. Neff Has a Narrow Escape
Bainbridge Republican, April 26, 1899

Mrs. J.A. Neff, met with a serious accident Friday noon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Julien Phetteplace, on Pruyn Hill [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY].  Mrs. Neff wished to use an oil stove and filled it as she supposed with kerosene oil, but had made a mistake in taking a gasoline can.  The stove had been lighted but the fire was put out for filling and as the gasoline was turned in, the heat from the stove which had not cooled off ignited the fumes of the gas and flames flashed out in all directions, burning Mrs. Neff's face and hands badly, setting fire to her clothes and also to the room.  Her screams brought the family from another room who gave the cry of fire outside.  E.D. Truman, druggist, with other gentlemen were on the street nearby looking at the progress of the water-works, and hearing the alarm rushed into the house.  They soon extinguished the fire but found Mrs. Neff suffering excruciating pain.  Mr. Truman ran to his store and procured ointments and medicines and Dr. Taylor was sent for so that after a time the patient was made comfortable and is now improving rapidly.
