Marriages (February 8)

The two notable society events of the week, in Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], have been the receptions given in honor of Mr.and Mrs. Alfred M. Welch, who were united in marriage August 28th, of this year.  The first of the parties was at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. B.P. VanHorne, and was held on the evening of Nov. 3rd.  There had been issued a large number of invitations to the friends of the high contracting parties and of the respective families, and early in the evening the guests began to make their appearance, eager to extend their congratulations to the happy couple and express wishes for their prosperity in the voyage of life on which they had embarked together.  Mrs. VanHorne entertained the company in a highly pleasing manner, and the brilliant assemblage, at a late hour, retired much delighted with the evening's enjoyments.  The absence from town of the Republican's society editor, prevented his presence, much to his regret.

The second event was last evening, Thursday, November 10th at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Welch, and will long be remembered by the nearly 100 guests who were present.  The bride and groom, in all the attractiveness of the new relationship toward each other, and which also comes with health, happiness and prosperity, received the company and its congratulations with so much of grace and dignity that they won golden opinions for themselves in the estimation of those present.  The host, Mr. A.L. Welch, moved about with the true patriarchal air, attending to the wishes of every guest, so that enjoyment might be full, and the hostess, Mrs. A.L. Welch, was none the less assiduous in her attentions to secure the comfort of all.  The refreshments served were all that could be desired and signs were not wanting that they had marked attention.  The guests, on leaving, expressed their abounding delight at having spent the evening under such attractive auspices, and it was said the only "blue" thing about the whole affair was the atmosphere of an upper room where, at one time, some 30 or 40 smokers did congregate, and by puffing on cigars made a dense blue. The attire of the ladies attending these receptions was a subject for remark, and added much to the general attractiveness, each lady, seemingly, making it her pride to dress and look her best in honor of the occasions.  The very best wishes of the Republican are tendered Mr. and Mrs. Alfred M. Welch, and the hope is expressed that all the joys and but few of the troubles of life may be theirs. The senior of the paper is peculiarly interested in the bride, from the fact of her being a Sunday school pupil of his in the years gone by.  Mr. Welch is well known as an enterprising, business young man, and his hosts of friends.  Again we throw the slipper.
