Marriages (July 13)

Mrs. Alice Chamberlin received a picture and clipping from the Middletown Times-Herald last week announcing the observation of the fifty-fifth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Carruth of that city, and old residents of Afton [Chenango Co., NY].  The article follows:  "Mr. Carruth and the former Ellen Caswell observed today the fifty-fifth anniversary of their marriage.  Mr. Carruth's father the Rev. B.B. Carruth, performed the ceremony at Afton, September 18th, 1888.  The Carruths live at 226 Highland avenue extension.  Mr. Carruth was retired in September, 1937, as an engineer for the O.&W. railroad after forty-seven years of service.  He began his railroad career at Sidney in 1890 as a car repairer for the O.&W.  He became a fireman in 1891 and on August 18th, 1899, was promoted to engineer.  Mr. Carruth is an ardent follower of the New York Yankees."  Many of the older residents will recall Mr. Carruth's father, who was a Methodist minister and lived in the present Chapin home on Pleasant avenue.  Arthur Carruth will be remembered for all time as one of the greatest ball players of the famous old teams that represented Afton, when several thousand people often journeyed to Afton to witness these great games against professional teams.  [Afton Enterprise, Dec. 23, 1943]
 
Mrs. Ruth Misner of Sidney [Delaware Co., NY] announces the engagement of her daughter, Ruth Elinor Douglas to Corproal Robert M. Schwartz, son of Mrs. R.E. Sisson of South New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY].  Corporal Schwartz is stationed in Geneva, Neb.  Miss Douglas is a graduate of Sidney Central School and is an employee of the Farmers Production Credit Association in Norwich.  Corp. Schwartz is in the Army Air Corps and has been in the service for 13 months.  [Sidney Enterprise, Dec. 30, 1943]
 
Mr. and Mrs. Warren B. Wilson of 45 River street [Sidney, Delaware Co., NY], have announced the engagement of their daughter, Eileen Lois, to Sergeant Robert Hutchens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hutchens of Council Bluffs, Iowa.  Miss Wilson was graduated form the Sidney Central school and is now employed by the Scintilla Magneto Division.  Sergeant Hutchens is an alumnus of Thomas Jefferson High school and was employed by the Union Pacific railroad before entering the Air Corps.  he is now stationed in a heavy Bombardment Squadron at Great Bend, Kansas.  No date has been set for the wedding.  [Sidney Enterprise, Dec. 30, 1943]
 
Miss Alice Jean Simpson, daughter of the late Louis Simpson and Mrs. Simpson of Unadilla [Otsego Co., NY], became the bride of SF 3-c Norval H. Wood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wood of Unadilla, in a pretty ceremony performed in the parsonage of the Unadilla Methodist church Tuesday afternoon at 5, by Rev. George Youngs, pastor.  The bride was charmingly gowned in powder blue with a corsage of blue orchids and was given in marriage by her mother.  Her sister, Miss Ellenore Simpson, was her attendant, and her gown was of dark blue with red accessories, and her corsage was of red roses.  The groom was attended by his father as best man.  Mrs. Wood is a graduate of the Unadilla High school and is employed at the Scintilla. The groom is a graduate of Franklin High school and before his enlistment was also employed at the Scintilla.  He is stationed at Camp Perry, Va., with the Seabees.  [Sidney Enterprise, Dec. 30, 1943]
 
Miss Dorothy LaRae Moyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Moyer, of Meadville, Pa., and former residents of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], and David Stanley Harvey, aviation cadet, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy M. Harvey, of Niagara Falls, were married at the home of the bride's parents, Friday afternoon, Dec. 24 at 2:30 o'clock.  The ceremony was performed by the Rev. V.J. Tingler, minister of St. Paul's Evangical and Reformed Church. The bride wore a powder-blue suit with black and white accessories and a corsage of gardenias, pink roses, and stevia.  Miss Donna Stallard, of Meadville, who was maid of honor, was attired in black with white accessories and a corsage of red roses.  Pvt. Santo A. Siciliano, of the medical detachment of the Allegheny College Training Detachment, acted as best man.  After the ceremony guests were received by the couple and refreshments were served. The house was attractively decorated with Christmas greens making a pleasing atmosphere for the occasion. Cadet and Mrs. Harvey left for a trip to  Niagara Falls, and last Tuesday Cadet Harvey departed for his post at Maxwell Field, Ala.  Mrs. Harvey will live with her parents for the present.  The bride is a graduate of Bainbridge Central  High School and is employed in the commercial office of the Meadville telephone Company.  The bridegroom attended Niagara Falls High School and was associated with his father in business before his induction into the service.  [Bainbridge News & Republican,  Jan. 6, 1944]
