Racket is Worked on Man in Afton - 1932
Afton [Chenango Co., NY], Sept. 7: An old racket in a new section brought about the arrest of two men who gave their addresses as Cleveland when arrested last night in Oneonta after word had been sent out from Afton of their operations here. The men, Alfred Goohey and Charles J. Germaine, were arraigned before Justice of the Peace Robert Bulkeley on charges of disorderly conduct and fined $10 each and sentenced to ten days in the county jail. The jail sentences were suspended upon condition they leave the county.
Driving up to a gas station operated by Tracy L. Doolittle and Ellery Decker in an expensive automobile, the men told a story of having accompanied a liquor-laden truck to within a short distance of the village when it broke down. Declaring that they had a purchaser for the contraband and that they would make good a $15 loan upon disposing of the liquor, a request was made for the load of $15 to make the necessary repairs to the truck in order that they might continue on their way.
Decker consented, turned over the money to the men and as security was given a watch which the two represented as being valuable. They then departed. Closer inspection of the watch showed it to be a cheap make. Becoming suspicious the authorities were notified and an alarm was broadcast for the men. They were picked up in Oneonta and returned here. After making restitution and paying the fine the two men departed.
