Obituaries (December 14)

Abigail Mason - 1836
In Preston [Chenango Co., NY], on Sunday evening, the 8th inst. at the residence of her son, Dr. Milton Mason, Widow Abigail Mason, relict of Geo. James Mason, formerly of Lebanon, Connecticut, aged 74 years.  Mrs. Mason had long been a professed follower of the Lord Jesus.  The Bible was not only her constant companion, but the subject of her daily study.  Her cheerful acquiescence in the will of her heavenly Father--the patience and resignation with which she bore the trials of a most distressing and protracted illness, afford abundant encouragement to her friends to trust that it is now well with her; and to feel that they do not mourn as those who have no hope--and that to her may apply the divine benediction, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest from their labors, and their works do follow them."  [Chenango Telegraph, May 18, 1836]

Desiah Burgess - 1839
In Butternuts [Otsego Co., NY], Mrs. Desiah, widow of Elisha Burgess, deceased aged 91 years.  She lived in Massachusetts, during the revolutionary war; and whilst her husband was from home, in the defense of his country, she sustained herself and family at home.  She cheerfully fed and warmed the friends of her country, while she spurned the tories from her door.  She has taught her descendants thro' life, to support that liberty for which she labored.  She likewise, in the last war, when her youngest was called to defend the rights of our country said, "go defend your rights, if it costs your blood; and remember, that we have gained them once for you."  And, as she supported the cause of the nation, so she did the cause of her redeemer.  She was a strong and faithful supporter of that religion, by which she lived, and has gone to rest with him she loved.  [Norwich Journal, Nov. 28, 1839]
