An Extraordinary Elopement
Wednesday evening of the present week the village of Whitney's Point in this county [Broome Co. NY], was thrown into an extraordinary fever of excitement over the elopement of one of its honored and most successful businessmen with a young lady who has been esteemed as a devout member of the Congregational church and a successful teacher of music. The names of the parties in this transaction in which all seem to have been equally agreed, are Mr. Simon S. Newell and his wife, and Miss Frances Thurston.
As we hear the story, Mr. Newell has for years shunned the society of his wife at home, in consequence, it was alleged, of her peevishness and fault finding, and has worked early and late at his store, amassing, some say, a fortune of from $25,000 to $30,000 in the hardware and stove trade. Some time since he sold out his interest, and with his family, consisting of his wife and two boys, moved into the house of Mr. John Thruston, father of the young woman already mentioned, where it is thought her sympathy for him first attracted his attention.
For several months just passed, Mr. Newell has been busily engaged in settling up outstanding accounts and preparing for the elopement, of which, his wife has all along apparently been conscious and an abettor. Out of his abundant means he purchased a desirable house and lot, gave it to his wife with $6,000 in money, and left in trust for his two boys yet underage, the sum of $3000.
On Wednesday evening, as the Syracuse train from the north passed through the village, the parties, accompanied by the friends, who bade them a friendly farewell at the depot, took seats for this city, on their way to the South, where the pair intend to make their home, and live in peace and quietness if they can. In Cleveland, Ohio, Dec. 8th, Mrs. Emma Mason, widow of the late I.N. Mason, formerly of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], aged 63 years.
In Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY], Dec. 13th Hon. Solomon S. Hall, aged 61 years.
It is with unfeigned sadness that we learn of the death of Hon. Solomon S. Hall, of Smyrna, who expired at his residence in that town on Friday evening, Dec. 13, at the age of 61 years. Mr. Hall was one of the most prominent and esteemed citizens of the northern portion of this county and was a member of the Assembly of this State somewhere near 1844-5. In every relation of life, public and private, he was respected and loved by all who had opportunity to appreciate the generous and noble qualities of his nature. In his death his family and the community in which he lived sustain an irreparable loss.

Whereas, it has pleased Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom to remove from our midst by death, Sister Frank Gregory, one of our most efficient and devoted members, who, by her love for the cause of Christianity, of Temperance and Humanity, has won the confidence and esteem of all who knew her, and who, by her kindness of heart, and sympathy for the unfortunate and fallen, has done much to alleviate their sufferings, and promote the cause of Temperance, in which we are particularly engaged: Therefore by the Mt. Upton lodge no. 372, I.O. of G.T. by it.
Resolved, That in the death of Sister Frank Gregory, we recognize the chastening hand of an all-wise Ruler, "who doeth all things well."
Resolved, That in her death the lodge has lost an efficient and earnest worker, an upright member, and a true and constant friend.
Resolved, that the friends of Temperance throughout the land have lost an earnest and zealous member, and a true and constant co-laborer; and those who have fallen beneath the tempter's snare, and whose frail barks are drifting towards the whirlpool of destruction, one of their best friends.
Resolved, That while we mourn her early death, we can but feel that "our loss is her gain."
Resolved, That we tender to the relatives and friends of our deceased Sister our heartfelt sympathy, in this their great bereavement.
Resolved, That a copy of these Resolutions be presented to the parents of Sister Gregory, and that the same be published in the Chenango Union and the Telegraph & Chronicle.
