Marriages

PADGETT - HALL:  In Greene [Chenango Co., NY], May 14th, by Rev. T.D. Hammond, Mr. Clark L. Padgett, of Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], to Miss Amy E. Hall, of Greene.

HAMLIN - FOWLER:  In Afton [Chenango Co., NY], May 14th, by Bider Porter, Mr. John Hamlin, to Miss Ella Fowler.

SPRAGUE - CLARK:  In West Winfield [Herkimer Co., NY], May 14th, by Rev. Gordon Moore, Mr. H.E. Sprague, of Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY], to Miss Mary L. Clark, of Plainfield [Otsego Co., NY].

A pleasant party assembled at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John E Babcock, in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Saturday evening last, to unite with them in properly observing the twenty-fifth anniversary of their wedding day.

Deaths

BROWN:  In Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], May 21st, Lillie May [Brown], daughter of Eleazer and Betsey Ann Brown, aged 1 year and 9 days.

Little Lillie, that darling flower, / Has gone to dwell in Eden's bower; / Her loving sister she will meet, / And holy angels there will greet.

Her sufferings here were great, we know, / While in this world of pain and woe; / But she has gone where sorrows may not come, / In Heaven above, her peaceful home.

Her body sleeps in the silent grave, / But Christ has said to her soul, "Arise," / And she, with that sister, who had gone before, / Awaits her parents in the skies.

KINNIER:  In Smithville [Chenango Co., NY], May 20th, Mr. John Kinnier aged 69 years.

CHURCH:  In Coventry [Chenango Co., NY], May 20th, Mr. H.H. Church, aged 53 years.

CASSELLS:  In Earlville [Madison Co., NY], May 21st, Dea. James M. Cassells, aged 83 years.

Rev. Leonard Howard, some thirty years since pastor of the Baptist Church in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], died at Rutland, Vt. on the 2d inst., at the good old age of 77 years. 

On the evening of Thursday (19th inst.) Mrs. Samuel Haight, living near Sidney Center [Delaware Co., NY], was instantly killed by lightning.  The fluid passed near the house and hit a pear tree, and at the same time passed through the top of the window burning holes in the curtain, and instantly killing Mrs. Haight. Her niece, Miss Hutchinson, from Gilbertsville, was very  near her at the time, but escaped uninjured.  No marks of the fluid were found upon the person of the deceased except on one of her toes.  Sidney Plains Star

THOMPSON - BALDWIN:  In Patterson, N.Y. [Putnam Co.] May 25th, by Rev. Drs. Baird and Kickham, Mr. E.B. Thompson of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] to Miss Helen M. Baldwin, of the former place.

BROWN - WILLCOX:  In North Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], May 22d, by Rev. S. Moore, Mr. E.G. Brown of Woodhull, Steuben Co. [NY], to Miss Laura A. Willcox, of Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY].

Deaths

ALDRICH:  In Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY], June 1st, Elnora D. [Aldrich], wife of John B. Aldrich, and daughter of Dea. Elisha Crandall, aged 22 years and 10 months.

HALL:  In Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY], June 2d, Mr. Lyman Hall, aged 31 years.

TRASK:  In Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], June 3d, Mr. Almon Trask, aged 70 years.

BOWDISH:  In Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], May 22d, Rev. Leonard Bowdish, aged 58 years.

THURBER:  In Corning, April 30th, Mr. B.H. Thurber, formerly of Greene [Chenango Co., NY], aged 60 years.

Sergt, Lyman Hall, late a soldier of the 114th Regiment, died in Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY], on the 1st inst. of inflammation of the lungs.  Mr. Hall was continuously with his company from his enlistment in July 1862, till the close of the war, being promoted from private to Orderly Sergeant.  He participated in all the campaigns and engagements of his Regiment, and was wounded in the battles of Opaquan and Cedar Creek in the Shenandoah.  His funeral was attended on Friday at South Plymouth, a large number of friends, acquaintances and soldiers being present.  Col. PerLee and Dr. Beecher having been informed of his decease, were in attendance, and during the service publicly testified to his estimable character as a soldier, and her worth as a citizen as far as they knew.  His age was 31 years.  He leaves a wife and two children.

FIELDS - SHIPPEY:  In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], May 31st, by Rev. J.C. Ransom, Mr. David P. Fields to Miss Mary Shippey, both of Norwich.

DOWNS - BRADLEY:  In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], June 5th, by the same, Mr. Sanford Downs of Hornellsville (Steuben Co NY], to Miss Ruth R. Bradley of Oxford.

LAMB - SPRAGUE:  In Syracuse [Onondaga Co. NY],  7th, by Rev. G.M. Hills, Mr. Anthony Lamb, Jr., formerly of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] to Miss Mary C. Sprague, all of Syracuse.

CARPENTER - JENKS:  In Oneonta [Otsego Co., NY], May 31st, by Rev. H.H. Allen, Mr. Charles S. Carpenter formerly of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], to Miss Hettie E. Jenks, all of Oneonta.

Deaths

BALDWIN:  At the residence of her brother-in-law David Maydole, Esq., in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], Juen 6th, Mrs. Semantha D. Baldwin, aged 69 years.

McNITT:  In this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], June 10th, Mr. Charles McNitt, aged 44 years.

BLISS:  In Smithville [Chenango Co., NY], June 5th, Clarissa A. [Bliss], wife of James H. Bliss, aged 42 years, 3 months and 5 days.

COWAN:  In German [Chenango Co., NY], May 30th, Walter E. [Cowan] son of B.F. and Hannah Cowan, aged 1 years.

PURPLE:  In Great Bend, Pa., May 25th, Elta J. [Purple], daughter of A.C. and Emma M. Purple, aged 3 years.

BARRY:  In Jasper, Steuben Co. [NY], May 10th, Mr. Elijah Barry, aged 83 years, formerly of Preston [Chenango Co., NY].

On Tuesday morning, the 31st ult. as the train on the midland Railroad, from Oxford to Oswego, was about half a mile north of Fulton, a man named Fletcher Rich, belonging at Sandbank, in Oswego County [NY], fell off the rear platform of the last car, and struck on his head on the side of the embankment.  His injuries were such that he survived but a few hours.

Ellison Johnson a brakeman on a freight train on the Syracuse and Binghamton railroad, attempted to jump on his train at Chenango Forks [Broome Co., NY], on the 4th inst., when he fell under the train and one of his legs was crushed by the wheels.  His injuries were so serious that he died about two o'clock on Sunday morning.  Johnson lived at the Forks, and leaves a family.
