Cars Tangle in South Main New Year's Morning: An automobile collision in South Main street [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY] early New Year's morning when Kenneth Sprague, of Afton, driving a Pontiac 8 sedan, and a Mr. O' Brien, of Cohoes, driving a Chrysler sedan, crashed together, resulted in the wrecking of both cars and putting the electric power and light service out of commission for nearly two hours, when Sprague's car, following the collision, swerved across the curbing and crashed into the electric light pole in front of the George Cook residence, severing it near the ground. The collision occurred in front of St. John's Catholic Church as Sprague was traveling north en route to Binghamton, where he expected to spend New Year's Day with friends. No explanation of the cause for the accident could be obtained except that at the time there were several cars parked in front of the Catholic Church which, while in no way interfered with plenty of clearance, might have confused the drivers. The cars sideswiped as they passed, tearing off the running boards, ripping away the fenders and doing other considerable damage. Fortunately neither driver was reported as having been injured.

Dazzled by Lights, Car Crashes Into Truck: When his car struck a truck parked along Route 7 about three miles north of Bainbridge shortly after 8 o'clock Sunday night, Stanley Lesure, 20, of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], and his companion, Sylvia Bailey, 18, of Afton [Chenango Co., NY] suffered only cuts and bruises the state police reported. The two, in a light sedan owned by W.A.Vandenburg, were driving north to Sidney when the lights of an approaching car blinded Lesure, who was driving, and he did not see a truck parked on the side of the road and crashed into it. The owner and driver of the truck, LaVerne Deforest, of Sidney [Delaware Co., NY], had run out of gas and he was compelled to stop on the highway. The Vandenburg car and the truck were considerably damaged.
Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Dibble and daughter, Marion, and Miss Clara Wilcox, Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] residents, miraculously escaped serious injuries early New Year's morning when returning from Masonville by the way of Sidney where they had spent New Year's eve, when their sedan crashed into a moving coal train at the Sidney Main street crossing. While the car was nearly demolished, none of the occupants were injured. It is reported that the train was moving slowly at the time and that there was no watchman guarding the crossing.

Masonville CCC Camp Will Be Abandoned: Captain Ralph Schultz, in command of the CCC camp on Route 8 a few miles south of Masonville [Delaware Co., NY], announced early this week that the entire personnel of the camp will remove late this week to the state Boy Scout camp at Ten Mile River near Narrowsburg. The Masonville camp will be abandoned, it is stated, and the buildings will shortly be razed. At their new location the boys will be employed in forest fire control work; fire breaks will be made over a 4,000 acre tract of wild land. There are 175 men and two officers at the Masonville camp, which has been one of the model camps of the CCC organization. The boys of the camp have won the respect and friendship of the people of the surrounding country who will be sorry to see them depart. The closing of the camp is said to be a part of the general program for reducing CCC activities as the need for such work among young men is passing.
