Letter from A.G. Keyes
The following letter is from A.G. Keyes, of the 5th Heavy Artillery, to his wife in this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on hearing of the death of their son, who died in the hospital at Salisbury, N.C.
Harper's Ferry, Mar. 26, 1865: Dear Wife: I received two letters from you night before last, informing me of the death of our dear son. It has completely unmanned me; it is heart aching to me. You can feel the grief that is upon me. I have one proud thought, and that is, he never feared or trembled in the face of our country's foes and dealt freeman's blows for the Good Old Flag through the terrible battles of Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, on the 13th of October, and was taken prisoner the 19th. He was brave and kind. The Lord has seen fit to remove him from us; we must bow to his will in meekness. O let it draw us nearer to the foot of the Cross. Give our hearts wholly to the Saviour, the Lord's will be done. It almost breaks this poor heart of mine. Fernando was very dear to me, we had toiled and suffered in our heavy marches through the burning sun through the Shenandoah Valley, rightly christened the Valley of blood. It seems like drawing the very life out of me, but I must submit. I am trying to keep up courage, but my health is too poor for the exposure of a soldier's life. You must not worry about me, we will trust the Lord that we may meet again, and see our country at peace.

Gen. Lee's Farewell Address
The following is Gen. Lee's farewell address to the army of Northern Virginia:
Headquarters Army Northern Virginia, April 10, 1865
General Order No. 9: After four years of arduous service, marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources. I need not tell the survivors of so many hard fought battles, who have remained steadfast to the last that I have consented to this result from no distrust of them. But holding that valor and devotion could accomplish nothing that could compensate for the loss that would have attended the continuation of the contest, I have determined to avoid the useless sacrifice of those whose past vigor has endeared them to their countrymen.
By the terms of agreement, officers and men can return to their homes and remain there until exchanged. You will take with you the satisfaction that proceeds from the consequences of duty faithfully performed, and I earnestly pray that a merciful God will extend you his blessing and protection. With an increasing admiration of your constancy and devotion to your country and a grateful remembrance of your kind and generous consideration of myself, I bid you an affectionate farewell.
R.E. Lee, General
