Fatal Accident: On Friday of the State Fair, Mr. S.L. Myers of Columbus [Chenango Co., NY], met with an accident which resulted in his death. He was walking upon the Central tract about five miles west of Utica when he was overtaken by a train. The engineer saw him upon the track and "blowed" and at once tried to stop the train, which, however, he was unable to do. the engine hit Mr. M. fracturing his skull, breaking both legs and five ribs. He was immediately taken to the Franklin House in Utica. He lived but a few minutes. Mr. M. has been partially deaf for some time which probably accounts for his not hearing the whistle. His remains were brought home to Columbus for interment.

My baby dear, my darling one, -- / Nay, bid not a mother dry her tear. / Its bright blue eye, its little form, / I fain would cherish longer here.
I mourn my loss--my Eddie dear-- / 'Twere wrong to bid the tear to dry / Alas! that thou shouldst leave me here / Alas! that thou so soon must die.
But thou canst sing thy suffering o'er / To which thy flesh was ever heir / With Christ thou it dwell forevermore, / And pain and suffering are never there
Thy little form had suffered much / Of pain, of anguish and distress, / Yet the smile thou gav'st when leaving earth / But portrayed thy future happiness.
Tis hard, oh, how hard, to give thee up. / But God forbids me to complain, / Since I may supplicate His grace, / And meet my child in heaven again.
