Died: In Brattleboro, Vt, Sept. 24th, of typhus fever, Mr. Hubert Harvey Stevens, of Mount Upton in this County [Chenango Co., NY], aged 27 years. Deceased, at the time of his death, was temporarily absent from home, and his remains having been brought to Mt. Upton, the funeral services took place on Wednesday, the 27th, under the direction of the Masonic fraternity, he being a member of the order.

Died: In New Hartford, Ct., Aug. 31st, Nettie [Manwaring], only child of E.L. and D.A. Manwaring, of North Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], aged 6 years and 11 months.
Died: In Unadilla [Otsego Co., NY], Sept. 29th, after an illness of several months, Mr. Erastus Kingsley, aged nearly 70 years. Mr. K. was well and favorably known to the traveling public as the proprietor for a great many years of the leading Hotel in Unadilla.
Died: In Willett, Cortland Co. [NY], Sept. 20th of consumption, Maurick M. [Dyer], youngest son of John S. and Harriet Dyer, aged 21 years and 11 months. Thus Death has summoned another dear one to a better country. About five weeks before he died, he was adopted into God's family, and we trust is now in his Father's heavenly mansion. the entire community deeply feel the bereavement, but we bow to the will of God.
Death of Henry Van Der Lyn
Died: In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], Oct. 1st, Henry Van Der Lyn, Esq., aged 81 years.
Another of the well-known and most respected citizens of this county is no more. Henry Van Der Lyn, Esq. died at Oxford on Sunday last Oct. 1st, at 1 o'clock P.M., at the advanced age of 81 years. It is not too much to say of the deceased, that he stood, during the greater part of his active life, if not at the head of the Bar in this section of the State, at least in the front rank of the very few who could justly aspire to that distinguished honor. He was devoted to his profession, especially in its higher walks, and never wearied of the study and labor which devolve upon all, without exception, who follow it with success. But with all his devotion to the law, and the industry that he bestowed upon his large and lucrative practice, he was ever social and generous in this intercourse with the world; considerate and tender towards every form of human suffering; and scrupulously mindful of the amenities that belong to a refined and well ordered life. He was a liberal supporter of both the Church and the Academy at Oxford, and of the latter was for many years an active trustee. During the later portion of his life, after retiring from the practice of his profession, he gave gratuitous and valuable instruction to the law students of the village, and this he did regularly nearly up to the time of his last sickness.
Mr. Van Der Lyn was born at Kingston, N.Y., April 21, 1784. He was the son of Peter Van Der Lynn, a Surgeon of the Continental army and nephew of John Van Der Lyn, the distinguished artist. He graduated at Union College in 1802, and was the valedictorian of his class. He studied law in the City of New York with the late Hon. Ogden Edwards, and after his admission as an attorney, in 1806, moved to Oxford, where he resided to the time of his death.
It is seldom that a citizen of this county has died who was more generally known and esteemed while living, or who carried with him to the grave more of heartfelt love and respect, than Henry Van Der Lyn.

Died: WILES: At Willet, N.Y. [Cortland Co.] October 1st of Cholera, after an illness of four days, Adam T. Wiles, aged 35 years 3 months. Again death has entered our community and removed a loved one. The deceased will be missed as a kind and loving husband, a dutiful son, an affectionate brother, and an obliging neighbor. He leaves a mourning wife and infant daughter. He had given his heart to Jesus, and we trust our temporal loss is his eternal gain. A multitude of friends attended the funeral at his residence. The services were conducted by Rev. James H. Sage, assisted by Rev. S. B. Kinney. J.H.S.

Another Soldier Gone
Died: Sergeant R.M. Greene, died at Cincinnatus, in the 29th year of his age.
Such is the brief record of the death of another who has given his life for his country. Serving first in the 1st New York Rifles, where he was promoted for his merits to be 1st sergeant, re-enlisted afterwards, and continued in active service, till he entered a hospital, which he left only to return home to die. In his nearly four years in the army, he was in several battles, and in them, as in camp life, or on the march, he was the brave, disciplined and courageous soldier, ever at his post, and shrinking from no danger. No longer numbered with the living, he will be cherished among the dead soldiers and heroes of the Republic.
