Harry Wakelee, an esteemed resident of Sidney [Delaware Co., NY] for many years, employed as trainman on the O.&W. Railroad, who has been in poor health for the past two years, but only seriously ill for three weeks, passed away at his home at about 6 o'clock last Thursday evening, his ailment being Burgess disease. Hattie M. Sutliff, 61 years old, of Afton [Chenango Co., NY], died at Afton Hospital Sunday afternoon. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Sutliff, of Afton; a daughter, Mrs. Katherine Neer, of Afton; a sister, Mrs. Mary Hartson, of Norwich; and two brothers, George and Grant Follett, of Norwich. James Palmer, 72, died at the Chenango Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Accidentally injured Aug. 25, while accompanying his nephew, Maurice Ingraham, loading logs in a mill above Norwich, he suffered from a slight fracture of the skull and hand injury. He had been confined to the hospital since that date and was reported showing improvement until just a few days ago when complications set in. [Bainbridge News & Republican, Sept. 16, 1943]
Dr. Joseph Jacobs, doctor of veterinary surgery, died suddenly of a heart attack at 4:30 Monday morning at his home at Hobart [Delaware Co., NY]. His death was a shock to the community as he had been in his usual good health. The body was taken to Brooklyn, accompanied by his wife and sister, where the funeral was held. Andrew S. Gilchrist, of Walton [Delaware Co., NY], died at the Fox Hospital in Oneonta, Sunday, Sept. 5, He had been ill about three weeks. Mr. Gilchrist was born in Meredith, July 7, 1872. He spent many years in the vicinity of Delhi and Elk Creek, where his boyhood home was. As a young man he engaged in the milk and restaurant business in New York City. Later he became a carpenter and had traveled over a good portion of the United States. The past eight years he has spent in Walton and vicinity. He is survived by one sister, Miss Mary E. Mark W. Newman, 59, of South Main street [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY], died suddenly of coronary thrombosis while at work at the Dry Milk Co., Sept. 13. Mr. Newman, who lived his entire life in this community was engaged in the lumber business most of his years, until later years when he was employed at the Dry Milk Co. He was a great lover of horses and always had some in his possession. born in Afton [Chenango Co., NY], Oct. 1, 1883, he was the son of Arthur and Mary (Lane) Newman. In 1902, he was united in marriage to Blanche Peck, of Sidney. The survivors are his wife, and four children, Mrs. Archie J. Lyons, of Oneonta; Mrs. Charlie F. Myers, Donald and Betty, all of Bainbridge; a sister, Mrs. A.J. Vosbury, of Binghamton; a brother, Fred A. Newman, of Bainbridge, and several nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 16, at Colwell's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Wilfred Lyon, of Hartwick, a friend of the family, and the Rev. R. Lewis Johnson officiating. Bearers were: Edward Partridge, Edward Partridge, Jr., L.A. Orvis, William Snyder, Charles Weeks and Dr. J.M. Flannery, Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery [Bainbridge, NY]. Employees of the Borden Company and the O.E.S. attended the funeral in a body. The many floral tributes from relatives, fellow employees, neighbors, church friends and organizations from Oneonta, Binghamton and Bainbridge attested to the high esteem in which he was held.
