Mrs. Emma J. Darlin Celebrates 78th Birthday
Bainbridge News & Republican, April 26, 1945

Mrs. Emma J. Darlin celebrated her 78th birthday on Friday, Apr. 20.  She received many flowers, gifts, and beautiful birthday greeting cards.  At lunch, a beautiful cake with pink and white decorations and lighted candles, graced the table.  The day ended in a very delightful manner.  Mrs. Darlin accompanied her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey J. Wood, to a covered dish supper at Rockdale, sponsored by the Rockdale Church.  After supper Mr. Wood showed moving pictures of local residences in Rockdale, including the church and members attending the service, also two reels of Mexico.  Mrs. Darlin met old acquaintances that she had not seen in many years, which made a very pleasant ending to a perfect day and many pleasant memories to last a whole year.  She wishes to thank all of her many friends who had a part in making her birthday such a happy occasion.

BCHS Senior Trip, 1945
Bainbridge News & Republican, May 31, 1945

The chill air of the April night removed the last vestiges of sleep from our eyes as we waited to board the 1:19 a.m. train for New York.  On the way down the girls tried to sleep but couldn't make much of a success of it while the boys took turns playing cards with Miss Marion.  the conductor tweeked Mary Shapley's nose, waking her from a sound sleep to give him the old Shapley look!

At the Erie station we took a bus and zipped through the Holland Tunnel and then zipped over to our hotel - on foot WITH suitcases.  While waiting for breakfast in the hotel dining room, the girls who were watching a certain young naval officer saw him walk directly into the ladies' room, walk out, look at the sign and clap his hand to his head in utter confusion!

The NBC tour in Radio City was a great success for Irene Woods and Harold Parsons who realized their ambitions to be televised. They acted so-o-o-o-o-o-o natural as if it were their regular business.

We saw the Radio City music Hall performance in the afternoon and "Hats off to Ice" in the evening.  Miss Smith remembers especially a certain little dog in the Music Hall show--he was cute!

Friday we took the Staten Island ferry to that island, past the Statue of Liberty and past SAILOR crews. The afternoon was spent in the Hayden planetarium and associated museum.  The group split up at night, some seeing Sammy Kaye's show and some having their pictures taken.

Saturday was all out shopping day with a Radio City Tour squeezed in in the afternoon and topped off with Benny Goodman at night.  This accounts for the cute clothes the boys and girls have been wearing.

The students again separated in their choice of church on Sunday, the majority attending St. John the Divine's Cathedral.  We journeyed down 5th avenue park Sunday afternoon and really know the meaning of "5th avenue on a windy day."

Conclusions drawn from our trip are:  Bruce Gorton is sweet as a hula girl;  Helen Perry is lonesome without Everett; The senior girls are crazy about sailors--especially Jo Terry; everyone was patriotic about souvenirs except Miss Smith who brought home the hotel key; telephone operators don't make very good alarm clocks; the seniors enjoyed themselves immensely and if they had more money they would have done it all over again.                  --Helen S.
