Master Sergeant William E. Webster, of Laurens, Otsego County, [NY] was killed in a training plane crash near Chappell, Neb., the War Department notified his wife on Wednesday. He had been in the Army since Nov. 13, 1939.
Pfc. Fay Smith Receives Good Conduct Medal

Pfc. Fay L. Smith,. brother of Everett Smith, of South Main street [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY], has been awarded the Good Conduct Medal while serving with the Army overseas. The Medal was awarded for having completed more than one year's continuous active federal military service, for demonstrated fidelity through faithful and exact performance of duty and for good behavior. Pfc. Smith entered the Army in April, 1942, and went overseas in August, 1943. Before going overseas, he received training at Fredericksburg, Va., and Camp Blanding, Fla.
Pvt. Clarence Goad is German Prisoner

Pvt. Clarence Gayhart Goad, formerly of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], who was reported missing in action in Italy several months ago, is a prisoner in Germany according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Edith Stowell, Elkton, Md. Pvt. Goad enlisted in the Army Feb. 17, 1941. He also has a brother, Jack Goad, who is serving with the Army.
1st Lt. Wayne Yale Killed in Action

First Lieut. Wayne Yale, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Yale, of North Jackson [Washington Co., NY], is reported by the War Department to have been killed in action at Anzio Beachhead, Italy, on May 29. The young soldier had been in the U.S. Army for six years, serving some time in Panama. He was trained for tank service and was commander of a tank at the time of his death.
First area casualty in the D-Day invasion was reported Thursday, when the Navy Department notified Kenneth S. Johnston, of Laurens [Otsego Co., NY], that his son, Coxswain Stanley Walter Johnston, had been killed in action. He had received his training in Sampson and was stationed in Virginia before being assigned to sea duty. Coxswain Johnston was born Feb. 12, 1926, and attended the Laurens Central School. At the time of his enlistment he was working in Oneonta.
Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Pierson, of Greene, received a telegram from the War Department Saturday that their son, Lieut. Carl H. Pierson, had been killed in action in Italy on June 1. Lieutenant Pierson enlisted in the Army in May, 1942.
Lieut. Donald Griffin, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Omar J. Griffin, of Roxbury [Delaware Co., NY], is a prisoner of war in Germany. Word to this effect was received by his parents June 2, which followed a telegram from the War Department of two weeks before, stating that he was missing in action over Germany.
