Nettie Miles Brookins

1869 - 1943

Mrs. Nettie Miles Brookins, wife of Arthur Brookins, passed away at the family home in north Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] Thursday morning at 10:30 after a protracted illness.  The deceased was born in Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY] Sept 1, 1869 and her childhood was spent there.  For many years she lived on a farm at the location where death occurred moving there in 1899.  She was united in marriage with Arthur G. Brookins of North Norwich, Jan. 15, 1930 at the Congregational church in Norwich.  they had been engaged in farming since their marriage.  She was kind and neighborly and a woman of fine character.  She will be mourned by many friends.  Besides her husband there survive a daughter, Mrs. Lena Hopkins of Smyrna; a sister, Mrs. Alice Graves of Norwich; three brothers, Arthur Miles of Utica, James Miles of Norwich and Burt of Smyrna; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nephews and nieces and cousins.  Private funeral services are to be held at the Robert J. Fahy Funeral home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Dr. G. Edgar Wolfe officiating.  Interment is to be made in the North Norwich cemetery. 

 

Addie M. Phetteplace

February 1938

Miss Addie M. Phetteplace, aged 74, of Haynes [Chenango Co., NY], died Tuesday night at the Chenango Memorial Hospital.  She had been seriously ill at the hospital for three or four days.  Miss Phetteplace is survived by one sister, Miss Jennie Phetteplace, also of Haynes.  Funeral services will be held from the late home at Haynes Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.  Rev. F.L. Anderson, pastor of the Oxford Baptist church, will officiate.  Burial will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY].

 

Benjamin S. Pierce

December 1943

Services for Benjamin S. Pierce, who died suddenly at the supper table Monday night at his home in the town of Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY], are to be held at the Breese Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, with Rev. R.L. Matthews officiating. Burial is to be made in South Plymouth.  Mr. Pierce was born in the town of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] Feb. 18, 1879, but had been a resident of the town of Plymouth for 43 years.  He was engaged in farming and had been in failing health for some time.  There survive his wife and four children, Mrs. Angeline Mundy of Norwich, Harold and Everett Pierce of South Plymouth and Mrs. Harold Whitney of Frankfort, also several grandchildren, great grandchildren and cousins.

 

Ruth Pearsall Cooley

April 1946

Ruth Pearsall Cooley, wife of L. Ansel Cooley of this village passed away at the Chenango Memorial hospital in Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] on Sunday morning, April 15th, following a severe illness of several weeks duration.  About a week previous to her death she was discharged from the hospital and seemed to be much better, but was returned to the hospital on Friday evening and from then on no hope was entertained for her recovery.  Mrs. Cooley was born on Nov. 1, 1914, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Laverne Pearsall and has been a life long resident of this community [Mt. Upton, Chenango Co. NY].  A graduate of Mt. Upton Union School she has always been popular in the community.  On August 6, 1938, she was united in marriage at the Mt. Upton Baptist church with L. Ansel Cooley, by whom she is survived, as well as by her parents mentioned above and one sister,  Mrs. Helen Cooley of Norwich and three brothers, Graydon of White Store, Clarence of Bainbridge and Glen of this village.  For many years she has been a member of the Baptist church and its societies and the Mt. Upton unit of the Home Bureau and has a host of friends who will mourn the loss of her cheerful greeting.  The funeral was held from the Baptist church on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Harold Tallman, officiating.  Prof Reisburg of New York and Norwich, a family friend presided at the organ.  Burial in the Mt. Upton cemetery was in charge of the Wm. Breese Company of Norwich.
