Col. Smith is Dead
B a letter received by Mrs. Smith this Tuesday noon from Capt. Bockes, the worst fears of our citizens are realized. Col. Smith is dead. We have but time to announce the fact, and leave comment to the future. He died with the harness on in the cause of his country, at once a hero and a martyr.
The following letter from Lieut. E.P. Per Lee, confirms the sad news:
St. James Hospital, N.O. La., June 20, 1863
My Dear Uncle: Col. Smith is dead. He died about 1 A.M. yesterday. His remains were brought here, and I was to accompany the body home. Everything was arranged, even to the procuring of the transportation, and I went to the undertaker to have the body taken on board the boat. But in the meantime he had discovered that decomposition had so far taken place that it would not be safe to send the body at present, and said we would be obliged to wait eight or ten days. Then it can be transported in safety, and I shall undoubtedly accompany it. I am improving. I am obliged to make this note brief, as the mail is on the point of closing.
Yours Truly, E.P.P.
