A telegram, last Thursday night, to Prof. Wm. C. Bowen, brought us the sad intelligence that Walter H. Cunningham, for more than two years an apprentice in this office, was dead.  At the beginning of the new year, while working for us, he was seized with the inflammatory rheumatism in its most acute form, and after lying here several weeks, was taken to his home in Greene, Chenango County, with the hope that the early spring days would find his usual health restored and himself again at his work.  This hope, however, was not fulfilled, and though our last intelligence from him was rather cheering, it was evident that some time must elapse before he could resume his duties.  But we were wholly unprepared for the sudden news of his death, and it struck out heart strings keenly.

Only those who knew Walter intimately can comprehend the sorrow that it costs us to record his death.  As a workman, he was faithful in every particular, earnest, active, capable, giving rare promise of high attainments in his chosen profession.  As a friend, he could be trusted fully - deceit was wholly foreign to his nature, while he possessed a soundness of judgment uncommon in one so young, his age being only seventeen.  As a companion, his social qualities endeared him to all with whom he associated.  Combined with all these qualifications, was talent, ambition, and culture, which gave promise of a bright and useful future.  But he is gone!  The Stern Reaper makes no distinction, and he spared not our friend.  But thank God, there is a place where Death cannot enter - and there we confidently trust Walter rests now and shall forever.

The telegram to Prof. Bowen was a request that he should preach Walter's funeral sermon, that being his desire, expressed before his death.  The services were held last Sabbath in Greene.  Cazenovia Republisan, [Chenango American, Greene, NY, June 10, 1869]

A Curiosity

The following inscription was copied from a tomb stone in the town of Smithville, in this County [Chenango Co., NY], and handed us for publication.  We give it verbatim:

Tabitha Agard lies here.  She was the wife of Joseph Agard Esquire who was one of the first settlers of this town A D 1798.  She died Sept. 9 A D 1818 aged 68 years.  This woman after many years of the greatest toil in this once howling wild in which she together with her family suffered much by hunger and nakedness, was taken with a lingering illness which lasted several years.  She suffered much pain of body and depression of spirits, yet she knew in whom she had believed and waited with patience the coming of the Lord.  She was an obedient wife, a loving mother, chaste and a keeper at home.  She was a succorer of many in the settling of this country.  Both Indians and white men have often received food from her hand.  She instructed her children to be always obedient to their father and to fear God.  Every day she was attentive to prayers, bowing the knee to the Lord Jesus thus leaving a glorious example for all her sex to be obedient to their own husbands, teachers of good things, chaste keepers at home.  She had four sons that cleared the ground where she and all this great family of the dead lie."  Norwich Union
