WEED:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], Nov. 26th, Mr. Clinton Weed, aged 28 years.

About half past five o'clock on Friday evening last Clinton Weed, an employee at the Midland depot in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], met with an accident which resulted in his death on the following day.  He had been sent with a train up the DeRuyter Branch, to Shumway & Co's planning mill to deliver a quantity of lumber, which he assisted in unloading.  On the return of the train, which was backing down towards the main line, he jumped from the car upon which he was standing, for the purpose of running ahead to turn the switch at the junction.  Unfortunately, he did not get clear of the car, his feet by some means being thrown beneath it, the wheels passing over both legs.  His right leg was nearly severed below the knee, while the left one was terribly cut and lacerated between the hip and knee.

The wounded man was carried to his residence on Adelaide Street, but a short distance from the scene of the accident, and medical assistance called.  He was attended by Drs. Beecher, Wescott and Church, who amputated the right leg just below the knee, and dressed the other limb in the hope of saving it.  But the shock was too much for the poor fellow, and death put an end to his sufferings at noon on Saturday.

Deceased was a son of the late Roselle Weed of East Norwich, where he passed the most of his life, and was well known to many of our younger people.  He had been in the employ of the Midland Company for about two years.  He was 28 years of age, and leaves a wife and one child, who are left in dependent circumstances.  His funeral was attended on Tuesday morning.

______________________________

Many of our citizens will recollect Frank M. Burdo, one of the first conductors on the Midland Railroad after its opening to this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], a fine-looking young man, who was devoted to his business, and made hosts of friends among his associates and the traveling public.  Since that time, he has been employed on different railroads in various parts of the country, but having become addicted to drinking, he failed to keep positions which were secured for him. The butterfly friends who stood by him as long as his money lasted, deserted him, and jeered at his misfortunes, and his repeated attempts to reform were failures.

On Monday of last week, he went from Rome to New York, after more than a week of entire sobriety, in pursuit of employment as a streetcar conductor.  He went into a drug store on Wednesday evening, for the purpose of having a leech applied to a bruise over his eye, and after the application he seemed to become stupefied and entirely unable to move. Thereupon a police officer was summoned, and the unfortunate man was taken to the Ninth precinct station house, between 9 and 10 o'clock P.M. A comfortable room and bed were given him, and at intervals during the night the sergeant visited him, the last time at half past 1 o'clock in the morning.  Each time he seemed to be sleeping soundly and was not awakened.  At half past three the sergeant again went to his room, but he was dead, and in the opinion of the physician, who was at once called, he had been dead about an hour.  A postmortem examination was made and it was found that the immediate cause of death was congestion of the brain.  His lungs were found to be nearly consumed and the heart was somewhat affected.

The remains of the unfortunate young man, accompanied by his devoted wife, were taken to Bridgewater, Oneida Co. [NY] where the funeral was held on Sunday afternoon.

______________________________

A shocking and fatal accident took place in Coventry [Chenango Co. NY] on Saturday Nov. 21 William Spaulding in the employ of Charles Stone, near the Basswood meeting house, went to his work, chopping in the woods on the morning of that day, taking his dinner with him.  Not returning at the expected time in the evening, it was feared that something had happened to him, as he was alone, and search was made.  The first tree he fell, it seemed, lodged against another tree, and in getting it down, by some means, he was crushed beneath it in the fall, his head at the same time being driven against a stump, smashing the skull, allowing the brain to escape.  Death of course was instantaneous, and from the  position in which the body was found probably not a muscle stirred.

Dr. M.D. Spencer, of Guilford, one of the coroners of the county, was called and held an inquest, which resulted in a verdict substantially in accordance with the above facts. Deceased has lived in different parts of the country, last summer working in Coventry, where he is well known, though he has no relatives nearer than Binghamton, at which place a brother resides.  He has another brother, a Presbyterian clergyman, in Ulster County.  He was an industrious, kindhearted man, and made friends with all whom he associated.  he was a soldier during the late war, and escaped tis dangers to be taken off in a less glorious and more horrible manner than war affords.

Guilford [Chenango Co. NY]:  The remains of William Spaulding who was killed by the falling of a tree while chopping in the woods some four miles west of here, were taken by his brother to his home in Binghamton [Broome Co. NY], for burial on the 22d inst.  The deceased was a single man, some 35 years old and employed at the time of his death in chopping cord wood for Mr. Lewis Anderson. [Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, Dec. 3, 1874]

Cortland [Cortland Co. NY]:  Mr. John Odell a well-known and highly respected citizen, about 60 years of age, residing in Cortland met with a fatal accident on Saturday night last.  It was just after dark, and his wife had gone into one of the neighbors and there was no one present to witness the occurrence. When Mrs. Odell returned to the house she found her husband sitting in a chair, dead.  His boot and stocking were off one foot, and he had the stocking in his hand.  Blood in considerable quantities covered the floor about him, and a heavy line of blood marked the course which led from where he sat dead to the wood pile out of doors.  A gash was found cut in his foot some two inches long, on the inside, a little below the instep.  An artery must have been severed and he literally bled to death. Great quantities of blood lay all the way he had come.  He was in the habit of bringing in large pieces of wood for a sheet iron stove, striking the blade of an ax in the end and using it as a handle.  He must  have been attempting this when the accident occurred, as there are the marks of the ax on a large piece of wood where the marks of blood begin.  The ax not holding, a second blow was undoubtedly struck, glancing and hitting his foot with the result above mentioned.
