Deaths

Col. Ezra Hewitt, Norwich [Chenango Co. NY], died on Saturday, June 23.  Col. Hewitt came to Norwich from Connecticut, about thirty-five years ago and immediately took a prominent place among the agriculturalists and leading men of the county.  Possessed of rare judgment, a firm will and marked urbanity with the stringent integrity, he exhibited in a striking degree the characteristics of the New England stock.  Conscientious, even to rigidity, in his religious principles, he was yet generous, and his suavity won him the friendship and confidence of a public that was wont to rely on his judgment for counsel and advice.  He was a member of the Congregational Church and took a lively interest in its prosperity, contributing liberally of his means to its support.  His widow, Harriet A. daughter of the late Col. John Randall, survives him.  His age was 83 years.

On Saturday last Eddie Morgan, youngest son of S.L. Morgan, New Berlin [Chenango Co. NY] was drowned int he river where he had gone to gather water lilies.

Smithville, Chenango Co. NY:  The funeral of Frank [Tarbell] youngest son of Charles P. Tarbell, was attended from his father's residence on Sunday last.  Rev. Mr. Warren of Montrose, Pa. officiated. Frank left this place a little over a year ago to go to work at Bradford, Pa. where he received an injury that resulted in death.  His death will be mourned by a large circle of friends. The family have the sympathy of all, in this their hour of bereavement.

Frank Tarbell, son of C.P. Tarbell of Smithville was fatally injured by the walking beam of an oil well at Alton, near Bradford, Penn., last Tuesday evening.  He was employed on the Tate farm and on Tuesday took the place of a man who was at work at well No. 1.

At nine o'clock in the evening he climbed up in the derrick to fix what is known as a water hook on the walking beam. He was on the braces which stay the "head-ache-post," with his arm around the post and his head partly upon the top, when the walking beam came down upon his head, crushing the skull.  He fell down about eight feet to the floor, sliding on the reverse cord part of the way.  He was senseless from the time the beam hit him.

His brother, G.E. Tarbell, Esq. was telegraphed to at Greene, and he received the dispatch on Wednesday.  He made all haste to reach Bradford, taking Erie Railway train No. 1 at this city and having to travel from Carrollton to Bradford, a distance of fourteen miles on foot in the night.  There he waited from three o'clock in the morning for the first train to Alton and from Alton to the Tate farm he had to travel three miles on foot and reached his brother at eight in the morning.

At five o'clock in the afternoon an operation was performed upon the skull to get the pieces in proper place.  Four physicians were in attendance, and the operation was skillfully performed, but the patient only survived it about half an hour.  Just before he died, he indicated by a smile that he recognized his brother.

Frank was about 20 years of age.  He went to the oil country about 18 months ago and engaged his services with John Davis & Son as a clerk, and about two weeks since went to work on a well for the purpose of learning the business, and eventually investing there.  He was a bright, energetic young man, and won hosts of friends in that bustling country.  He was treasurer of Era Hook and Ladder Company of Bradford.  A delegation of Eras took the remains to Bradford early Friday morning. They were escorted to the Bradford depot by the Fire Department and again accompanied to Carrolton by a delegation of Eras.  Binghamton Republican, 13th inst.

His remains arrived here [Greene] Saturday morning, and were taken to his father's residence in Smithville.  His funeral was very largely attended on Sunday, quite a number going from this village.  Rev. Mr. Warren, of Montrose, Pa., officiated.

A fire occurred in Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] Saturday morning accompanied by loss of life.  At 4:30 a.m. the fine brick mansion of the late David Griffing was discovered to be on fire in the room occupied by Mrs. E. Griffing.  Mrs. Griffing was seriously burned, and though she was able to leave her room, she was able only to reach the hall, a point some ten feet distant, where she was found dead.  Her neck, shoulders, face and back were burned, many places being burned to a crisp.  Her age was 57.  Her aged mother, the widow of the late Dr. Lully, formerly of Syracuse, who has been an invalid for many years, was in her room on the second floor of the dwelling and was rescued with much difficulty. The other inmates were roused by the smoke and gave the alarm. The damage to the house is estimated at $2,500 insured for $2,000. The furniture was uninsured and suffered greatly by hasty removal and from water.  Mrs. Griffing was a respected lady, and a cousin of Senator Roscoe Conkling. The fire is supposed to have been caused by the explosion of a kerosene lamp which Mrs. Giffing was in the habit of leaving burning.

News Item

Mrs. Lodema A. Spencer, of this village [Greene, Chenango Co. NY] on Saturday last caused the body of her late husband John B. Spencer to be exhumed from the Sherburne Cemetery  [Chenango Co. NY] where it was buried on the 16th day of last December and brought to this place; she believing that Mr. Spencer came to his death by being poisoned or form some other unnatural cause, Spencer not living with her at the time of his death but with another woman in Sherburne.  Coroner Avery, of Norwich, was notified and came here on Monday to hold an inquest. A jury was summoned, an autopsy made by Drs. Bartoo and Avery and some evidence taken.  The inquest was then adjourned until Friday, March 19th, for further evidence.
