The death of Rev. Elisha L. Abbott which occurred at Fulton, Oswego Co. [NY] Sunday evening the 3d inst., is an event [that] awakened sorrow in many hearts on both sides of the globe. His remains were brought to New Woodstock [Madison Co. NY] and buried. Owing to the severity of the storm, no funeral services could be held at that time. Arrangements were made however to have funeral exercises appropriate to the occasion at Woodstock on Thursday the 20th inst. at 10-1/2 o'clock, A.M. the sermon will be preached by the pastor of the Baptist Church, Rev. Mr. Fulton. The Rev. Dr. Leonard will deliver an address, probably also the Rev. Mr. Simmons of Fulton.
Soon after Mr. Abbott became a disciple and a minister of Christ, he devoted himself to the work of Christian missions. Receiving an appointment from the Baptist Board of Foreign Missions, he went to Burma where he labored mostly among the Karena with great zeal and very remarkable success. But he was compelled by the failure of his health to leave the field and come to a more congenial climate, not to recover, as the event has proved, but to die.
During the nearly nineteen years of his missionary life, this good man has accomplished much for God and the heathen and though there will be great mourning in India, when they hear of his death, yet there and here, his memory will be blessed.

On the 5th inst. of typhoid fever, at Burlington, Iowa, Elisha A. Nickerson aged 16 years, only son of Elder James Nickerson of this village [Cazenovia, Madison Co. NY].
Cazenovia Republican, Cazenovia, NY, Dec. 20, 1854: We copy the following notices of the death and funeral services of Elisha AS. Nickerson from the Iowa State Gazette: Mr. Nickerson was a brother-in-law of Rev. Mr. Johnson, and, at the time of his decease, was residing in his family. He was an amiable and promising youth, just entering upon early manhood.
He had come to our city to spend a season with his friends and to enjoy the advantage of our university, of which he had been a faithful student during the present session up to within a few days previous to his death and had become much attached to the institution and especially interested in the Eonodelphian Society connected with the same of which he had become a member. Being naturally of a strong constitution and never scarcely sick a day in his life, none could more reasonably than he have expected to have shunned disease and enjoyed long life. But He who doeth all things wisely here ordered that he must die. His disease was typhoid fever, of a most malignant form. Suddenly he was cut down, while yet in youth and full of strength.
The blow will fall like an avalanche upon his aged parents in a distant State, of whom he was an only and devoted son. May He who tempers the storm to the shorn lamb shield them in this tempest of affliction.
To the afflicted family of his brother in this city, who watched over him so anxiously in his sickness and now so deeply mourn their loss, and to those parents, who have yet to know of the calamity that has befallen their loved and only son, we tender our warmest sympathies.
The funeral services of young Nickerson were largely attended by the citizens and members of the university on the 7th inst. at the Baptist House of worship, conducted by Rev.'s Gasner, Salter and Cowles. At the conclusion of the services, the procession was formed in front of the church, being led by the bearers and the corpse and then the carriage of the family mourners. Next in order, and as among the chief mourners of the occasion, came the members of the Eonodelphian Society, and then the professors, teachers and pupils of the several departments of the University, about one hundred in all. In the rear followed the carriages of citizens and friends who had joined the funeral march to share in the solemnities of the occasion. Meanwhile the bell of the university toiled forth loudly and solemnly its knells of mourning and as the large procession wound through the streets and up the College Hill to the gate of the grounds, the scene was solemn and imposing in a high degree. In front of the college the members of the Society and School parted form the procession and entered the edifice to resume their duties. The carriages, however, moved on with the corpse and proceeded to the family tomb of Judge Mason, where the body was temporarily deposited to await orders from the parents, either for its burial in this city or removal to the family graveyard in New York.
Cazenovia Republican, Cazenovia, NY, December 27, 1854: The remains of Elisha A. Nickerson reached this place last Monday morning from Burlington, Iowa, where he died on the 5th inst. His funeral was attended yesterday, at half past ten o'clock A.M. at his father's residence. A sermon on the occasion will be preached next Sunday afternoon in the Baptist church. [Elisha A. Nickerson, d. 5 Dec. 1854, buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Cazenovia, NY]
