Sophronia Hollenbeck, daughter of Urias G. Hollenbeck and his wife, was born November 1, 1825, at West Bainbridge, N.Y. [Chenango Co., NY].  Her mother died when she was but an infant, which left her to be cared for by kind friends until the remarriage of her father.  When she was eight years of age her parents moved to Bainbridge.  At sixteen years of age she attended a revival meeting in the Turnpike schoolhouse, where she accepted Christ as her Saviour, and proved faithful until the end of her earthly life which came on Saturday morning, May 19th.  She with earnest prayer and faith in God developed a strong Christian character, and was greatly beloved by those who knew her, having been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Chruch for all those years.  In 1893 she was united in marriage to Wm. Pearsall, who proceeded her to the spirit world.  This union was blessed with six children, three boys namely U.S. Pearsall, A.D. Pearsall, and Homer Pearsall; also three daughters, Mrs. A.J. Wilcox, Mrs. Perry Rood, and Mrs. Emma Herrick, who preceeded her parents in death. Eleven grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren survive her.  The funeral was largely attended and was held on Monday P.M., May 21st.  Rev. C. H. Sackett, a former pastor and an old acquaintance of the family had charge of the service, assisted by Rev. Owen L. Buck.  May there be a happy reunion of the family and friends in the heavenly kingdom where the inhabitants never grow old and feeble.  [Bainbridge Republican, May 31, 1917]

Crushed between two automobiles, Watson Smith of Unadilla [Otsego Co., NY] was instantly killed on the State road about a mile north of Unadilla late on Saturday night.  Smith was a member of an automobile party that had been to Oneonta and was returning to Unadilla.  It was shortly before 11:30 o'clock when one of the tire rims rolled off.  The car was stopped and several members of the party walked back in the road to search for the missing rim.  Smith remained with the car, which was left at the right side of the road and one wheel jacked up.  He was standing directly in the rear of the automobile, when there was a sudden flash of headlights and a car headed in the same direction crashed into the rear of the one standing still.  When the occupants of the second car, who were uninjured, tumbled out to investigate, they found Smith's body crushed between the two machines.  The second car was a large Cadillac and was driven by David Reed of Sidney.  It contained a party which had also been to Oneonta and was returning to Unadilla.  As an explanation of why he did not see Smith and the stationary car, Reed declared that Smith was standing in front of the tail light, thus obscuring it.  The body was taken to Unadilla and the Coroner is investigating, Smith is survived by his wife and 11 children.  [Bainbridge Republican, July 6, 1917]

The body of Harold, the nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest VanTassell of Sidney [Delaware Co., NY], who mysteriously disappeared last week Thursday and was believed to have been drowned was recovered Tuesday afternoon from the Susquehanna river just this side of the D.&H. railroad bridge, two miles above Bainbridge.  Glen Heath of this village with his boat was assisting in the search for the body of Horace Phelps who disappeared from Sidney on Monday and which was believed to be in this locality.  With Mr. Heath was Frank Howe of Sidney, who discovered the boy's body near the shore and both of them removed it from the water.  [Bainbridge Republican, July 5, 1917]
