Marriages (May 27)

Donald H. Comfort, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Comfort, of Sidney [Delaware Co., NY], was united in marriage to Miss Sophie M. Kotasek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Kotasek, of Maine [Broome Co., NY], Saturday, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Endicott.  Friends of the popular young couple are extending their best wishes for a happy future.  They will live in Sidney, where they are both employed in defense work at the Scintilla Magneto division of the Bendix Aviation Corporation.  Mr. Comfort attended Bainbridge Central High School.  [Republican News & Republican, Aug. 21, 1941]
 
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hine wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Wanda Hine to James Epply, of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY].  Their marriage will occur sometime this month.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Aug. 21, 1941]
 
Chrzan-Gunther:  Miss Jean Chrzan, daughter of Mrs. Chrzan of 40 St. Charles street, Johnson City [Broome Co., NY], became the bride of Victor C. Gunther, son of Mrs. Joseph Gunther, of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], on Saturday morning, August 23, at 9:30.  The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Purcell in the St. James Catholic Church, of Johnson City.  The altar was decorated with pink gladioli.  The "Wedding March" was played as the bridal party entered and "O Promise Me" as they left the church.  The bride, who was given away in marriage by her brother, Thomas Chrzan, wore a gown of white net over satin with long train and a three tier veil held by a wreath of roses.  She carried a bridal bouquet of white roses.  Miss Ruth Barnard of Glen Castle, who was bridesmaid, wore an orchid dress and carried a bouquet of red roses.  The best man was Francis Gunther, a brother of the bridegroom.  Both the mother of the bride and bridegroom were dressed in navy blue and wore corsages of red roses and baby's breath.  Following the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served to the immediate families at the bride's home, a three tier wedding cake centering the table.  A reception was held in the evening at the bride's home for the bridal party and relatives.  Mrs. Gunther will reside at the home of her mother for the present as Victor Gunther has been called into the draft, leaving on Tuesday.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Aug. 28, 1941]
 
Devoe-Groppe:  Wednesday, August 20, at Rockdale, occurred the marriage of Mrs. Victoria Groppe to Harold W. Devoe, both of Rockdale [Chenango Co., NY].  The ceremony took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Merritt, the sister and husband of the groom, who acted as witnesses.  The officiating clergyman was the Rev. Louis V. Hutton, of Gilbertsville.  The bride is a telephone operator and the groom is employed as a guard at the Scintilla Corporation in Sidney.  Best wishes are extended to them.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Aug. 28, 1941]
 
Knapp-Newman:  Miss Rosemary Louise Newman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo T. Newman, of Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], and Charles Daniel Knapp, son of Mrs. D.L. Knapp, of Sidney [Delaware Co., NY], and the brother of Mrs. Joseph Rushton, of Bainbridge, were united in marriage at St. Malachy's Church, Sherburne, Thursday morning.  August 28, at 8:30 with the Rev. Kissane, officiating.  The bride was given in marriage by her father.  She wore white mousseline with wide lace inserts, and a fingertip veil.  She carried white roses and sweet peas.  She was attended by her sister Miss Gertrude Newman, who wore blue mousseline with pink accessories, and carried an old-fashioned bouquet of pink rosebuds.  The bridegroom was attended by his brother Joseph J. Knapp, of Auburn.  Ushers were Joseph J. Rushton, of Bainbridge, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, and Dr. Joseph Kelly, of Washington, D.C.  A wedding breakfast was served to the immediate families at the Sherburne Inn which was followed by a reception at the home of the bride.  Mrs. Knapp is a graduate of Sherburne High School and attended Business College in Washington, D.C.  Mr. Knapp; is employed in the Scintilla Magneto Plant.  Mr. Knapp has a wide circle of friends in Sidney and vicinity who will welcome his bride and him to their new home in the Cole apartment Avery street.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Sept. 4, 1941]
 
Anthony-Carter:  Sunday morning, August 31, at 9 o'clock, E.D.S.T., occurred the marriage of Miss Stella Rita Carter, daughter of Mrs. Hazel Fellows, of Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], to Duane Erwin Anthony, son of Mrs. Myrtle I. Wilson, of Guilford, and R.D. Anthony, of Norwich.  The wedding was solemnized in Christ Church, Guilford, the Rev. Frederick Ransier, rector, officiating.  Previous to the ceremony LeVan Burt, of Brooklyn, gave an organ recital of delightful music.  The church was attractively decorated in yellow and white flowers with white flowers at the altar.  The bride was attired in her going away suit of dark blue with white accessories.  She carried an arm bouquet of white gladioli.  Her maid of  honor, Miss Rose Sastri, of Norwich, wore a dress of gray cloth and her accessories were also white, and her flowers were pink gladioli.  The best man was Howard Jeffrey, Jr., of Guilford.  Both he and the groom wore boutonnieres on their lapels.  After a shower of rice and best wishes the happy couple left for a weekend trip to Canada.  They are both popular Guilford young people. having attended Guilford Central School.  Mrs. Anthony is employed in the Norwich Knitting Mill and Mr. Anthony in the men's clothing department of the Montgomery Ward Co., Norwich.  They will be at home to their friends the last of the week at their apartment on Mitchel street, Norwich [Chenango Co., NY].  Mrs. Anthony was guest of honor at several pre-nuptial showers.  Best wishes are extended to the bride and groom.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Sept. 4, 1941]
