Rev. Daniel Losey
1815 - 1905

Rev. Daniel Losey entered into rest Monday morning last.  On the first day of last September he reached his 90th birthday and until within a very few years had been a man of remarkable mental and physical vigor.  He was born in Pompey, Onondaga county, N.Y., the youngest son of a large and influential family.  When a lad of 13 his invalid mother died.  With the instincts her early instruction had instilled in his mind and a thirst for knowledge he entered Albany Normal School and was a member of the first graduating class.

He was a natural teacher, unique and original in his methods, and to this noble calling gave the greater share of his life.  For a number of years he taught in Manlius, N.Y., and later for many years in the city of Syracuse he filled the position of principal in the ward schools.  he was a man of strong convictions and determined purpose.  No persuasion could swerve him from the things he believed to be right.  In early life he became a Christian and church member and for many years was an earnest worker.  His warm, sympathetic nature drew him to the sad and erring.  While assistant pastor of the First Methodist church in Syracuse he was greatly interested in rescue work and gave liberally to endow the Orphan Asylum in that city.

For nine years he had lived in Norwich in the home of Frank Doane, with his nephew, William Doane, who tenderly cared for him.  He made many friends, particularly among the older people, who will feel his loss most keenly.  His presence in the social meetings was a benediction and inspiration to all.

His loving and devoted wife was laid to rest in the cemetery at Manlius, N.Y., on the 20th of November 11 years ago.  On Thursday, November 16, so near the anniversary of her death, he was buried by her side.

Brief funeral services were held at the home of Frank Doane on Front street Wednesday afternoon at 3:30.  Rev. Wilson Treible officiating.  The remains were taken on the Ontario & Western train Thursday morning to Manlius for burial.  William H Doane, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Doane and daughter and Rev. Wilson Treible accompanying them.
